'09 Girls HS Season

With coaches practice started at most high schools, the excitement for the 2009 MN high school season is upon us. Should be a great year for HS soccer with many very strong U16, U17 and U18 girls club teams.

Anyone know the Moundsview, Centennial score?

Anonymous said...

WBL hardly even challenged Woodbury defenders tonight and the "attacking force" pretty much had free reign to score at will.

Anonymous said...

Moundsview doesn't play until tomorrow night.

Anonymous said...

apparently I'm not the only one accused of "dithering"
http://www.newser.com/story/72272/stop-afghan-dithering-as-troops-face-danger-cheney.html

A very nice result for Edina. I'm not surprised they won, but very surprised it was a 1-0 game. I would have guessed 3-2 or 2-1. Either way, EP will be an early favorite next year, with most of their top players being 11th graders, while most of Edina's group are seniors.

Eastview also put up a valiant effort against a high potent (and direct) offense.

Once again soccer is the red headed step child of the Star Trib. Not even one reporter out last night, no pictures? Football was not even playing. In years past, didn't they at least go out to one game and snap some pictures, it was the section finals! Any better on the east side of the river?

Anonymous said...

STAR TRIB SUCKS

FOOTBALL FOOTBALL FOOTBALL

UNFORTUNATELY NOT:

FUTBOL FUTBOL FUTBOL

Anonymous said...

That's because high school is the red-headed step child when it comes to soccer.

Are you a club apologist? Get over yourself and let the kids enjoy this time of year, stop with the HS soccer bashing. Outside of a handfull of teams, club soccer is not that much better, no matter what you and your club egomaniacs, oops I mean friends like to think. Especially MN club soccer, how many teams get out of regions last summer?

Anonymous said...

Regardless of thoughts of the quality high school vs. club soccer, taking a look at the girls that won vs. lost last night it is easy to see that high school soccer really matters to them, and that is what counts.

Anonymous said...

you see less emotion and fewer tears from the losing side at the state cup finals than you do at the section finals.

Anonymous said...

tears at any finals for HS socce seem silly. Unless you are only playing for the "school spirit" aspect, rarely did anyone see College recruiters at any HS games this year. According to some I've spoken to the majority of them in this economy are onle attending the bigger club season tournaments and looking mainly at those players who have contacted them.

Anonymous said...

Hey, does anyone know how the breakout will be for section/conferences next year? I heard they were changing again. Also, why do they seem to change so often?

Anonymous said...

1:42 - I guess my question for you is -why should kids play sports? Is there not something to be said for fun, friends and pride. I just don't understand the goals of the club teams. Why do the MTA U16team practice 5 days a week in the offseason? What is the goal? College soccer - really? That is the objective? Then what? Too many kids - and their parents - think there is a big prize out there if they just work hard enough. The real prize is the game along the way. School spirit matters to the players. It is sad that parents feels a need to make that out to be nothing.

Anonymous said...

2:04 - i get what you are saying, but what if the goal of the team is to strive to be the best they can be? why do musicians constantly practice their craft? why do singers or actors rehearse? some teams set goals at the beginning of the season - i bet for some teams it is to get to and hopefully win their section or even the state tournament.
why even keep score if it is just about having fun and "the game along the way".
different strokes for different folks - nothing wrong with that.

Anonymous said...

Eastridge beat Mahtomedi?

Anonymous said...

2:19--I agree with you in general. I think teams should set goals and work to improve and many high school teams do that. I have a problem with the "brass ring" idea that there really is something greater. I value people who play many sports and enjoy them. I am not sure some clubs foster enjoyment of the game.

Anonymous said...

2:24 - it's the parents as much as the clubs. in business, offer the service to fill a need and you can profit. the better the perceived service, the more successful you will be.
i guess what it all boils down to is we should all just do what's right for ourselves. who are we to judge what is right for others? i guess i would now have to include myself in that equation - so i'm out..

PLAYERS CARE ABOUT HS. PARENTS CARE ABOUT CLUB SOCCER

Anonymous said...

some of the clubs may "promise" something for college and i think the parents and players think it is so glamourous. Very few of the girls will go on and play college soccer for 4 years, thats just the reality of it all.

Anonymous said...

3:04- agree

Some who even get the brass ring of a college scholarship often burn out or do not enjoy what they are doing and quit, then look back at all of the 5 nights a week practice in the off-season and ssay- what the hell was that for? On the flip side, you will be hard pressed to find a player who played in the dome and does not cherish the memory.

Anonymous said...

306 i totally agree with you

Any updates from Wayzata game?

Anonymous said...

Wayzata won 2-1

Anonymous said...

Wayzata out shot Armstrong about 20 to 4. AHS scored on their first shot on goal in the 2nd half. WHS came back & went ahead on corner kick headers. AHS GK was great but couldn't do it alone. WHS was the better team.

Anonymous said...

As a coach of multiple sports, many high school athletes have no idea what the competition is like even at the Division 3 level, and are so unrealistic/ignorant about their chances of even playing college sports.

On another note, I get discouraged when hearing so many posters on this blog slander high school sports. Either they had a bad HS experience themselves or don't really get it when it comes down to what really matters in athletics.

Anonymous said...

any score on centennial vs moundview.

Anonymous said...

any score from section 8

Anonymous said...

The reason soccer doesn't get more play in newspapers is not because it is HS soccer. It is because it is soccer. Hardly anyone cares who doesn't have a kid playing. It is a minor sport in this country, we just have to face it and quit expecting it to receive the same coverage as the sports that have a wider following.

Anonymous said...

Centennial over Moundsview, 2 to 0

Anonymous said...

How can wayzata get a bye in the first round and only have to play 2 games to get to state what a joke of a section. The mshl needs to balance these sections out better. Elk River getting in with an embarrassing record come on.

Anonymous said...

There will always be weak sections. WYZ has had a strong section in some years. Edina made state for years in a weak section with all city teams. Section 8 never sends a good team to state. Luck of the draw and can change as programs rise and fall.

Anonymous said...

Wayzata had a strong sections some years which years were they lol. TP as of last ten years is a murcat as far as scheduling tough teams and willing to risk his winning percentage to help team and players be more competive. Agree Wayzata should no way be seeded ahead of eagan with their usual whippy dip schedule.

Anonymous said...

7:01, leave over already. Your envy and spite shine through. You make it about the coach when it should be about the players.

Go away loser.

mytake said...

Yeah, ER really cruised through sections, huge margins of victory?!

Anonymous said...

Huge margins of effort and drive and the will to get it done. They will win it all.

Anonymous said...

8:52 - If you were familiar with some of the other teams that have qualified for state, you may also identify them as playing with heart.

Anonymous said...

East Ridge making it to state in their 1st year and having no seniors in the school is a phenomenal accomplishment.
For anyone to deny that only makes them look like a fool.
Congratulations to the team and the coaches.

Anonymous said...

I think Lakeville South did the same thing a few years back. Anyone know if they had seniors in their first year? I believe they also played Class A and might have even won it???

Anonymous said...

Lakeville S did not make it their first year, although they were good.

Anonymous said...

Class A

#1 seed Orono vs Rogers

#2 seed Blake vs Mankato W

#3 seed East Ridge vs Cloquet

#4 seed East Grand Forks vs La Crescent

Anonymous said...

Don't be surprised if Rogers knocks off Orono. Once they finally got healthy they've been on a roll the last three weeks (14-1 with their only loss to Class AA Maple Grove). Most of their losses came when they were not at full strength.

Anonymous said...

Lakeville South did make it to state their first year, but it was in class A.

Anonymous said...

LS also had no seniors when they went to state the first year of the school. Age not nearly as important in girls sports as boys. What are thoughts on seedings today? Class AA seems obvious with WDB, EDI, WYZ and EAG in that order. In A BSM will be #1 but seems more open after that. Predictions? Does it matter?

Anonymous said...

Class AA

#1 Woodbury v Lakeville North
#2 Edina v Anoka
#3 Wayzata v Elk River
#4 Eagan v Centennial

Anonymous said...

BSM got knocked off by Orono yesterday 1-0 on an own goal.

Anonymous said...

As many others have noted, PM and CM have something special going on at Blake. They enter the season unranked, with an extremely young team, and with no one expecting much from them and end up winning the toughest section in state and earning the #2 seed when they probably could have been given the #1 seed. Kudos to the Blake coaches and girls!

Anonymous said...

9:34 - Too bad for BSM, great for Orono! BSM was overrated anyway. Too much hype never serves a team well.

Anonymous said...

BSM scored on themselves. That's a sad way to lose (and win).

Anonymous said...

really wayzata gets another cakewalk team? this is getting ridiculous, will they ever play a good team this year???

Anonymous said...

Someone must love Wayzata.
They play a creampuff schedule in which they have five ties and no meaningful wins, play in a creampuff Section, and draw 5-11-2 Elk River in the 1st round.

Lakeville South did make State their 1st year (Class A) and were knocked out in the 1st round in an upset. Same group that later won State in AA.

East Ridge is winning with enough talented players for A and an excellent coach (not condoning the State Cup issue, which is a separate issue). They did quite well against AA competition in their conference (especially the 2nd half), and should have been the #1 seed in State.

Anonymous said...

In Class A seedings, you can be 17-1 and have beaten nobody and you will always get the top seed over a team that went 14-4 but whose only losses were to Class AA teams.

Agree with 11:53 regarding East Ridge. That team has as much talent (mulitple MN ODP kids) than any other team in Class A. That's all it takes at that level.

Class AA - to win you need quality and quantity.
Class A - to win you really only need some decent quality (no one has much quantity).

Anonymous said...

Woodbury will win AA and Eastridge A as a result people who don't know how youth soccer works will think that Woodbury has a fantastic youth program =)

Anonymous said...

Woodbury Soccer Club is light years ahead of where it was a few years ago since their new DOC took over. There is a very solid foundation in place which should make for a quality program in the years to come.

Anonymous said...

What happened to Eden prairie?

Anonymous said...

EP lost to Edina 1-0. Very even game, but slight edge to Edina who deserved the win (IMO).

Anonymous said...

What happened to SPA vs. Blake?? I wasn't there to watch, I heard Blake dominated?

Anonymous said...

Blake did dominate. Especially in the shots on net category, it wasn't even close. SPA did have some great talent (#4 is absolutely amazing). Although Blake seemed to have the upper hand that day. It is great to see Blake succeed with such a young team, they only have two seniors. They should do amazing things in the years to come. One of their best players is 8th grader Lydia Sutton. Watch out for Blake in State.

Anonymous said...

Blake is an interesting team. They defend well. They rarely score goals in the run of play. Instead, virtually all of their important goals have been off of direct kicks...where that youngster is really dangerous. Effective strategy...very conservative and I think they rely a bit much on the constant whining by their coaches and parents to help gain the calls from hs refs. It is a good strategy for winning 1 0 games but it is not very creative soccer.

Anonymous said...

yawn...can we talk AA? who cares about A?

Anonymous said...

5:13:

Is winning or creativity more important? You made a fool out of yourself in your post. Do some research.

Anonymous said...

What are your thoughts on Orono getting the first seed? They play a real soft schedule and beat very few good teams.

Seems to me lots of people think ER is the team to beat?

Blake had a similar record to Orono but beat at least a half dozen real solid teams. They also tied Orono.

Did Orono get the #1 seed mainly because they beat BSM? Are people for real when they say that Rogers can beat them?

Anonymous said...

5:13 - I was a neutral spectator at the SPA vs. Blake game. If anyone was whining, it was completely understandable; the ref was awful! She completely blew at least a half dozen fairly important calls.

Anonymous said...

East Ridge has a really solid team. They would be my prediction for winning state. As for Blake, I haven't seen much. I would not be surprised if they made an early exit. But, What do I know, I'm just a fan. Maybe Blake can make some real noise, only time and hard-work will tell.

Anonymous said...

Parents will be parents, doesn't matter what school. But coaches are not coaches. PM and CM at Blake are the furthest cry from whiners and poor sports in high school soccer.

Class A Ms.Soccer?

Goalie from BSM

Anonymous said...

If Blake and East Ridge meet in the semis (which I think would be a great match), there would be a total of 2 seniors participating, both on Blake. What a youth movement!

Anonymous said...

Although Orono got the #1 seed, I think they drew the toughest quarterfinal matchup. Rogers could have easily been the #4 seed. Good luck to all!

Anonymous said...

Congrats to The BSM Goalie for Ms.Soccer....well deserved!

mytake said...

Yes, great to see a different position receive the award. Maybe this will set the tone for more defenders and keepers to be considered for this award instead of offensive players? Congrats Maddie Jobe!

Well deserved award for Ms Jobe. She is a class act. Iowa State is lucky to have her.

Anonymous said...

Yet another one that MDW passed by.... makes one wonder!

And ... then she wasn't... much like some many other good MN players who went to other big 10 or big 12 teams!

Don't be surprise to see her with the U18 National Team in the coming year.

Anonymous said...

If Orono is the #1 seed for Class A, then I would have to agree with those others who have commented on how weak this year's Class A teams have been.
I will also predict that Rogers will beat them by 2 goals.

Anonymous said...

Must be the year to give it to defenders and keepers.

Anonymous said...

LOL ems, they played 1st round games at SCSU last year as well. What didn't make sense last year was the St. Cloud team got to play in St. Cloud and three metro teams had to drive up to play their "neutral" site games.

which one's pink said...

Why does TP get rewarded for a soft schedule once again? Lots of people blast MO from Eagan , but at least they played WDBRY this year! Now, Eagan has the toughest 1st round in CNTL. This is two years in a row that WYZTA gets a higher seed over a more deserving opponent. The coaches do themselves a disservice by letting TP play a bunch of A schools and get away with it.

Congrats to SW for beating the U of EP. The new EP coach is a jerk. At least the former coach (the lil general) had a small bit of class, new coach has none.

Anonymous said...

which one's pink -

Back up your claim instead of just throwing stuff at a wall and hoping it sticks in regard to EP.

mytake said...

Just because Orono is #1 doesn't mean class A is necessarily weak. Recall that BSM, Mahto, SPA, Minnehaha, Simley, etc. are all out. Many ranked teams don't even get to state!

Anonymous said...

Just to be clear, BSM Goalie Maddie Jobe was not the recipient of the Class A Ms. Soccer Award. Junior Korleki Akiti of The Blake School won that honor. Congratulations to Korleki, and to the Blake Bears. What an accomplishment as a junior. She is special

Anonymous said...

pink: the fact Eagan drew Centennial is random. Only the first four seeds are determined by coaches, the last four teams are assigned spots randomly. Being ranked #1 - #4 doesn't really mean much when it comes down to it unless there is a team you really don't want to play in the semis. Who you randomly draw in the quarterfinal match does though!

9;04 dont you dare criticize TP a NATIONAL COACH OF THE YEAR, a likeable coaching legend. We will tag you a loser and a switch around the self interest reasons back in your face. Just remember its all about the players, thats why you schedule a whippy do schedule, its not about the coach and his national coaching record... ITS ALL ABOUT THE PLAYERS YOU LOSER, NOT ANYONE LIKES TO GET CALLED THAT OR LABELED THAT so shut up. As far E.P. coach and his sidekick they were spun off an unaccoutable organization that had some bad seeds and me coach and my self interest and clubs come first DISEASE. Was refreshing to see one true leader honored Buzz Lagos at state soccer banquet that actually thru time was amd is true WINNER in every sense of the word.

Coaches name Bijan Jibari as Mr. Soccer, Kassey Kallman as Miss Soccer winners
By Tim Leighton
tleighton@pioneerpress.com
Updated: 10/26/2009 12:18:09 AM CDT

Apple Valley and Woodbury got a double dose of good news Sunday.

Not only were the top-ranked boys and girls soccer teams, respectively, awarded the top seeds for the Class AA tournament this week, two of their standouts were awarded one of the season's top prizes.

Apple Valley defender Bijan Jibari and Woodbury defender Kassey Kallman were selected the Mr. and Miss Soccer Award winners by the state coaches association. The award is given to the top senior players. Totino-Grace midfielder Paul Yonga and Benilde-St. Margaret's goalkeeper Maddie Jobe were the winners in Class A.

Staunch defense is one reason Apple Valley and Woodbury are favored to win big-school state titles this week.

Jabari, who has nine goals and seven assists, has been a cornerstone of an Apple Valley defense that has given up a team-record five goals all season.

"He is a rock for us defensively,'' Apple Valley coach Chuck Scanlon said. "He is one of the hardest workers we've ever had."

With Kallman in the defensive third, Woodbury has given up just 12 goals over the past two seasons, a span of 43 games.

"She's very good at being one step ahead of the opposing players,'' Woodbury co-coach Bill Ebertz said.

Kallman has eight goals and six assists.

In 16 games this season, Jobe faced 122 shots and made 113 saves. He recorded nine shutouts. Yonga, a three-time all-state selection, has 15 goals and 16 assists for the Eagles, who are top seeded in the Class A field.

Anonymous said...

1107- how many did you have before writing that post? Sense, it did not make

Anonymous said...

What are some of Kassey Kallman's accomplishments?

-Probably the best player for the #1 nationally ranked team in the country...she HAS to be going somewhere and doing something big!

Can anyone shed some information? I think it's very interesting to have a player this good come from Minnesota.

Anonymous said...

wow! She's playing for Stanford?

Anonymous said...

Good riddance to EP, now we don't need to talk about how little class they have. New coach is a jerk and embarressment to his school. The lil general loved the game and respected the game, something missing in the new coach. SW outcoached him, EP has the best players in the Lake, but SW outcoached them. EP looked lack luster all year, and it all came to fruition in that section final. Lack of preparation and you could tell SW had his troops with a plan and they executed perfectly. If he keeps the girls on track, it should be a Edina Vs. Woodbury final. With Woodbury taking it!

Anonymous said...

KK is going to FSU.

Anonymous said...

Ok, not that anyone is arguing, but exactly did EP coach do to be such an "jerk", 4:32?

Anonymous said...

When and/or are all conference players being announced?

southside soccer said...

have seen the new EP coach at the club level for years and would agree that he is quite fond of himself and his opinions. On that note, heard lots of people turned down the EP job, is that true? Now that East Ridge has opened up, EP and WYZTA are the last of the super enrollment soccer schools, it would appear to be a dream job?

Anyone know?

Anonymous said...

many people didn't necessarily turn down the EP job, but rather didn't apply in the first place because of the timing of the opening. I've talked to MANY respectable coaches who probably would have gone after that job but because it opened up just prior to preseason they were locked in at their current schools or not willing to bail on their own programs on such short notice. The current EP coach had no problems leaving his own team out in the cold right before the season started to take a "better" job, though you can hardly fault him, its what coaches do at all levels.

I know of one coach in particular who told me if it had opened up any other time of the year he would have applied. It was the timing that made the "dream job" not so dreamy for many.

Anonymous said...

These things are often tied to teaching jobs. Decisions usually depend on teaching positions as that is the career most are in. Overall the coaching position is a financial blip. Most coaches do it for the love of the sport they are in.

A 7th grader from Orono makes All State?

Anonymous said...

Orono's coach had no older kids to nominate?

Anonymous said...

Of course there are seniors on Orono that may have deserved it but the coach liked the 7th grader.

Last year there was a team in the top 3 in AA (at the end of the tournament) that did not have one all state player - not promoted by the coach. Guess his message was they made it that far because of him not the players! Nice when it becomes an ego thing for the coach!

Anonymous said...

The 7th grader is quite an athlete, student, soccer player and young adult. And no, I am not related to her. Just an observer from the sidelines from an opposing club team. There is another 7th grader from North High School who also falls into this class of individual and I understand received all conference honors. Both of these young players will be something to watch in years to come.

Anonymous said...

what is someone going to look forward to with such a high honor at such a young age?

Anonymous said...

6:49 agreed. Saw her in ODP. My only question going forward is will she be as dominant when the other kids catch up in size? As for the 13 year old, too early to call her a prodigy, but she could become quite the player.

Anonymous said...

EP would have been wise to appoint an interim for this year and find the next heir the following year. It is an amazing job and I heard their first choice turned it down - TL and all they had left was a club coach and Tony. I think they could have a better coach and also built the program into a powerhouse. With Tony at the helm, it will be fun to watch the decline of U of EP.

Blake is good, Orono is no joke, the class tourney will be solid this year. Best of luck to all teams.

Anonymous said...

I predict Rogers and East Ridge will meet in Class A.

Blake deserves props for making State. Sec 3A is still a tough Class A section, but it was down this year. SPA was improved, but HA, Vis, and Blake were better teams last year. They are young and will be very tough in the next few years.

Orono did finally get past Benilde, but I'm betting on Rogers since they played a tougher schedule.

Anonymous said...

Nobody cares about Class A....terrible soccer

Anonymous said...

7:44 - I don't think your class A state tourney prediction is too far of a reach, but I don't agree with your analysis of section 3A being down. Although AHA was much weaker, the final four of SPA, Minnehaha, Vis, and Blake was the best combo of four teams left in any section IMO. Still can't believe Blake got through Minnehaha AND SPA, but from what I have heard they deserved it, which means it is hard to say they are weaker this year than last. SPA and Minnehaha were more solid squads than they have been in years. Would love to see a Orono/Rogers vs. Blake final, although (if they both make it) the East Ridge vs. Blake semi will determine the ultimate victor IMO.

which one's pink said...

Perhaps Orono coach was worried that if she did not give 7th grader the love the family would leave Orono and head to another school (BSM, WZTA, MTKA) or even SSM? If memory serves the boys at Orono had a player head to BSM when they felt "underappreciated" as a youngster.

You never know in the world of parent driven insanity!

EP will never fall of the face of the earth, no matter who is coaching as they generally cut as many players as some entire programs have on their roster!

Anonymous said...

I believe she was honorable mention, so still something to work towards - her 9th grade sister was also honorable mention. Congrats to the family.

I agree with the Rogers v East Ridge scenario. Both teams playing the best soccer and against tougher opponents towards the latter half of the season.

Anonymous said...

I actually think Rogers deserved the #4 seed. East Grand Forks, although undefeated, plays a cream puff schedule. However, I don't think Rogers plays an extremely tough schedule either compared to some other teams. Personally I don't think they will get past Orono, but Orono certainly drew the toughest quarterfinal opponent.

Anonymous said...

Orono played a tougher schedule then most A schools are more prepared and will make the final

Anonymous said...

Orono does NOT play a tough schedule. I'm surprised they got the #1 seed because of this. Both ER and Blake play more quality opponents.

7:52 - nobody cares about Class AA - terrible schools.

Can someone post a list of the surrounding states that play high school soccer in the spring vs the fall. I see on the thread below that the MTA u-14's are playing in a tournament this weekend but are missing several players who play varsity soccer. Looking at the brackets for that tournament it appears many of the surrounding states have representation at the same tournament. Is MN on an island being the only fall league for high school?
BTW good luck to the MTA girls and a TC Fire team who are participating this weekend.

Can't tell you off the top of my head, but if you go to the MRL website and check the U15, U16, U17 standings for last spring and fall you should be able to see who plays when. The only exception that I can think of is some of the Eclipse teams in IL do not play high school.

10/27 6:21 PM - if you look at the All State list - Orono has 2 Seniors that are listed.

Score predictions?

No team in 3A this year would have been able to beat HA, Vis, or Blake from 2008. All three graduated several top players, and HA lost OS to injury. SPA was a young decent team in 2008 (IMO similar to Blake this year). 3A was a very competitive section this year, with several above average teams, just not at the 2008 level.

Surprising prediction of 2009 -- a team can make/will it through Sections and to the State AA semi-finals by winning three games:

vs. last-place team from CLC (1-6-1)

vs. second to last place team from CLC (2-4-1)

vs. last place team from NWS (0-9-0).

Not related to KK - just smart enough to recognize extreme talent when I see it. What's your problem?

Anonymous said...

Any results from tonight in st. Cloud?

Anonymous said...

Edina over Anoka 2-1 in OT, according to Inside MN Soccer

Anonymous said...

Wayzata up 3-0 over Elk River 20 minutes into first half (Inside MN Soccer Twitter)

Anonymous said...

KK is the real deal. Hopefully she can make an immediate impact at FSU. It would be good for MN soccer. Same with CS. Wonder who trained those two at a young age? And no, I'm not a Bangu fan, but MA does teach intensity and both of those players have learned that lesson well.

6:49 - Blake really only graduated 2-3 good players last year, the rest were very replaceable. They are a better team this year for different reasons given what their younger players have brought to the table. It will be interesting to see if they can keep the magic going.

Anonymous said...

6:49 - agreed. If you add Mahtomedi and BSM into the mix not sure if any of this year's Class A state teams could have beaten any of them.

Anonymous said...

Re: Blake's creativity

Blake has never been a scoring powerhouse, but they do score big goals. And boy do they defend well as a team.

Anonymous said...

Wayzata 8-0 over Elk River. HS league needs to change the section format. Section 1 and 8 for both boys and girls rarely produce any teams in the Dome. No teams from outstate MN have won a AA State Title.

Anonymous said...

The teams that get to state are suppose to represent different areas of the state, which definitely are not the best teams in state. That is why there are usually some blowouts in the quarterfinals. I think it is nice that different regions are represented, but at the same time would like to see more quality teams get to state. It is even tougher in class A since sections are composed of 16 teams compared to just 8 in AA. Not sure this is all that fair.

Anonymous said...

Maybe add additional classes? A, AA, AAA, and AAAA

Anonymous said...

That would be too many. They need to go to a bracket system like they do for college basketball. That way the weaker teams will be eliminated early and the power houses can duke it out. One for class A and one for class AA.

Anonymous said...

How does a team that is 0-9-0 in its own conference make it to State?

Anonymous said...

it happens when you go from playing MG, Anoka, Osseo, CR, etc... in league to Moorhead and Brainerd in sections. Elk River was the #2 seed in their section. There are some Class A schools that are in conferences with lots of Class AA schools (Mahtomedi, East Ridge, HA, etc...) and oftentimes the reverse happens for them when it comes to seeding. Their losses against Class AA teams tends to tarnish their overall record.

by winning its section

Anonymous said...

kind of agree with 8:58, but the only way it would ever happen would be to combine the sections and state tournament all into one (like NCAA March Madness). Just one big tournament with every team seeded. there would be some whining about the initial seeding, but at the end of the day, it would hard not to end up with the best Final Four to wrap up at the dome.
this will never happen as all the outstate schools would vote against it as it would dramatically diminish their chances of "going to state".

Anonymous said...

I like the underdog and giving everyone a chance of "going to state." But having a AA team that finished 0-9-0 in a middling conference go to state to get out-shot 24-1 (not by a top seed) just dilutes the value/experience. It also encourages more ridicule of HS soccer. There has to be a better way.

Anonymous said...

10:09- leave section 1AA out of the "never get to the dome or win anything" conversation.

Lakeville HS was in the dome in 2000, 2002, 2003 and runner up in 2004.

Lakeville South HS was in the dome in 2006 and won state in 2007.

In 2005 LS should have won the A title but choked in the quarters.

Being in the dome 6 out of nine years, a second place finish and a title is far from "never winning anything."

take a deep breath 10:21.......

Anonymous said...

Exactly. Never post facts. Simply throw out false opinions like 1009 and the anti Wayzata guy.

Anonymous said...

10:27

Just clearing up a falsehood that was posted earlier. If that means that I was somehow ranting and raving, I can't imagine what your advice would be to the loads of idiots on this site who throw out regular insanity on a daily basis.

But thanks for the advice, a nice deep breath is never a bad idea.

Anonymous said...

Has any other school from section 1than the the Lakeville schools done well at state? or even made it to state? Maybe a few better south metro teams should be mixed into Section one to make it more competetive/challange the two Lakeville schools.

Anonymous said...

Rochester Century has been a top 10team many of these years, but never seems to get it done in sections, they even had Ms.Soccer on the roster last year.

If you single the Lakeville schools out why not single out Wayzata or Wdbry or even Mounds View the last few years?

Anonymous said...

Just ignore 10:27...the truth hurts.

Anonymous said...

Truth is there are usually only 2-3 sections each year that have more than 1 quality team.

Anonymous said...

11:42

Agree, in AA there is one brutal section and several ok ones and one laughable one

1142, QUALITY like beauty is in the eye of the beholder. I only saw one team this year that played a resemblance of what soccer should be played like.

Eagan over Centennial 1 - 0 in OT

339 i tend to agree. a ton of 'dump and chase'.

i won't restate the obvious but more classes in soccer are not needed. this was a down year all around.
the luck of the draw...the luck of the section (except wayzata..lol)...the luck of the bounce...for the most part, just an all around goofy year for who came to the top...

it's way too hard to string together multiple passes with a "possession" style when most teams don't have enough quality depth to pull it off. However, most teams have a big gun up top who has either the soccer skill to score or the hockey brute force to score. i've been to games where the midfielders had to be treated for whiplash from watching the ball always sailing over their heads.

LaCrescent 2-0 over East Grand Forks so much for being 22-0.

Anonymous said...

so much for the "undefeated" #4 seed from E. Grand Forks as they get out-shot, out-played, and out-scored 2-0 by La Crescent. hopefully a seeding lesson for next year when a really out state team comes in with that kind of record.

East Ridge score?

goalie for east ridge ??????????
why??????

Anonymous said...

what did the goalie for east ridge do?

Anonymous said...

8;20 just a rumor mind you no comfirmation yet but .... a minor sport womens soccer coach is offered AD job at school up north.

Anonymous said...

1002 is referring to MA's decision to place a field player in the goal for the shoot out. Why? Maybe because he thought the other team was better and should advance...

or, maybe the goalie was injured, or lacking confidence, or maybe he thought the player he put in the goal was the right choice at the time.

If it was any other coach, nobody would even be questioning the decision.
