'09 Boys HS Season

The 2008 boys high school season had a lot of parity with many very good teams. Who will emerge as this years champion?

I am so glad to be the first one to write in this space. Let's be positive and be constructive in our opinions. We don't need to read the trash talk and insults to kids. Good Luck to ALL players, schools, coaches, and ADs. There are no winners or losers in the HS game. Get your education and have fun playing soccer. Tomass, am sure you would agree without a diploma from Moorhead, we'd be lost. So kids get your education that's why HS is there.
BTW - tomass - Irish pub is always a good spot for sports chat!

Great post, 10:31. MTA still sucks.

Anonymous said...

Great Post!!!! The high school season should be about doing good in school first....and having fun playing soccer second. I think most will agree that the quality of coaching takes a nose dive after being with your club coach all winter, spring and summer. But hey...that just my opinion.

Anonymous said...

hi guys im jim from Edina and i think Jefferson High School could have a great shot at having another good season!! just my opinion.

Anonymous said...

5:51 No way you're from Edina. Edina people know how to punctuate contractions. Jefferson will have an average season. They lost their proven studs to graduation.

Anonymous said...

jefferson should be a good side, players from vly, ars, wsd 17 premier teams, EP should be good again, Valley should be very good, Lakeville North should be decent, and Eagan should also be a contender from the lake, but i think its still Valley's to lose this year

Anonymous said...

no preseason rankings? not that they mean anything...

Anonymous said...

armstrong 14-4-2

Anonymous said...

edina will be trash...end of story.
you lost your key players and you still didn't do very good last year.

Anonymous said...

jaguars have a german kid and a brazilian that are going to take this team back to state.. along with a ridiculous cast of premier players. valley or jaguars are a toss up for the best team coming into this season. but valley better win it this year or they are donzo next year

Anonymous said...

Hope the brazilian and german kid are not exchange students...that rule changed last year and if they are they cannot play at the Varsity level.

Anonymous said...

BJ will be a foot shorter this year. the talent graduated.

Anonymous said...

They still have 7 premier players two foreigners and some of the best young talent in the state.

Anonymous said...

jefferson will be trash.....any ideas on the Lakeville's or some of the south metro teams?..Burnsville, Eagan?

Anonymous said...

Eagan should be nice, had a 16 premier team that had a handful of kids to start, don't know about bville

Anonymous said...

wbl should be pretty good this year. They have a couple of players from the st. croix 17s as well as some younger talent.

Anonymous said...

minneapolis southwest and south have about 25-30 premier players between them, most from U15 Jedi and Wildcats and Westside 17's

Anonymous said...

Thats a stupid rule! Foreigners can't play varsity!!! Whoever made that rule needs to take there next left over a cliff and start changing things that actually have a purpose.

Anonymous said...

Hey guys this is Jim again for the land of the hornets. Lets just say my team has a huge rebuilding year. Haha. I'm not excited for Jefferson or a couple other teams on our schedule. But hey I LOVE SOCCER.

Anonymous said...

westside 17s won the premier league but nobody mentions it as they are not st croix or valley, blackhawks etc. Where do the bulk of westside 17s go to high school.
If their defence were at the same school teams would find it tough to score on them.

Anonymous said...

The problem is all the U17 premier kids from all those teams are spread out a couple players at all high schools except Valley who has 8 including a GK, 3 defenders, 2 forwards, and 2 mids. They also have 2-3 kids I believe that played on Lakeville's U17 premier team, not a great team but did give them a good experience seeing higher competition this summer then they will see in high school. I would say they are a favorite.

Anonymous said...

How about Cretin-Derham Hall? I've heard they should be good as well.

Anonymous said...

Central should be fun to watch 8 premier players 4 of them are state odp plus a handful of african kids who only play mens league in the summer. Could be interesting.

Anonymous said...

You are not serious are you regarding a rule about foreign exchange students?

Minnesota is petty enough to write a HS rule that keeps exchange students from playing varsity sports?

Is this so that the local kids can ensure playing spots, so as to spread the playing time wealth? You should be proud of your system in Minnesota, Comrades. Chariman Mao would be pleased.

WHAT A JOKE

Anonymous said...

How will Johnson do this year? After a dismal season last year.

Anonymous said...

stillwater had 100 kids try out. prelim cut was made to 45, and 30 will travel to scrimmage eden prairie saturday. state tournament team graduated one player of significance. young team loaded with SCV talent with by far the best coach in the state will give up fewer goals than anyone this year.

socmom said...

Here's the exchange student rule from the 2009-2010 MSHSL Athletic Eligibility Brochure that all students must sign...
3. FOREIGN EXCHANGE STUDENTS — Approved Foreign Exchange Students are limited to 1 calendar year of high school eligibility beginning with their 1st date of enrollment and attendance.
INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS – students not participating in a CSIET approved foreign exchange program are eligible only at the B-squad or JV level for one calendar year.

Anonymous said...

Hey 8:21, sounds like you might have seen some of the tryouts out at Stillwater. I have seen the SCV Rossoneri play and a couple of the kids look good enough to get decent playing time on V. Have any of the sophomores looked good?

Anonymous said...

Yes, the HS rule was enacted because local athletes parents were not happy that their kids were not getting the spots they "deserved". The sad thing is the rule was put into place because of Alpine Skiing and not any other sport.

Anonymous said...

From what I saw of soccer this past summer South of the River HS soccer will be a toss up.

Anonymous said...

Some of the exchange students are 18+ and have finished high school already, before they come over for a year of US high school. Parents and students who agree with the MSHSL goals of being an extension of the classroom, accept that these adult students really are not what the program is all about.

But, if you are from the school who gets the exchange student that is a terrific athlete, but doesn't displace your child, I am sure you will ignore the inequity to watch more wins...

Anonymous said...

we had them in many past years, never affected any of our kids' sports one way or another. Always felt if the kid was good enough it was not a problem. not sure why people get so hung up about it.

Anonymous said...

1:17 Hi i'm Bruno and i love soccer but JV is not fun!

Anonymous said...

2 SCV rossoneri players made an impact last year at stillwater as 9th graders. one played 95% of the time (14-year old defender on a state tournament team), the other was injured early but played a lot. both will star as sophomores, and will be joined by 2-3 other SCV rossoneri players. juniors are deep. basically SCV celtic, a solid C1/MRL/State Cup team with a great coach. only 1 SCV red devil (senior) is from stillwater, but others from WDB U17 C1 state champs and elsewhere will put the ball in the net. kinda cool when the local club develops local kids who excel at the local high school.

Any preliminary top 10's from those who have had an opportunity to watch top soccer this summer? From this blog it looks like Valley, Cretin, Jefferson, Stillwater, Minneapolis Southwest and Minneapolis South are teams already being talked about it but would love some actual ranking before the first game is played.

To start things off, here is mine:
1. Apple Valley
2. Eden Prairie
3. Stillwater
4. Minneapolis Southwest
5. Jefferson
6. Osseo
7. Minneapolis South
8. Eagan
9. Coon Rapids
10. Woodbury

Anonymous said...

7:21 that looks pretty good from what I know...I think Osseo is a real stretch as they graduated most their top players, I'd probably have Armstrong in there.

Anonymous said...

jefferson sucks....GO Granson hawks!!!! they are up north if nobody has heard of them but they just got 7 africans...who knows why they moved here but we are about to be sick

Anonymous said...

Mahtomedi Boys r gonna tear up.no doubt!

Anonymous said...

Africans do not equal good soccer. And having 7 on the field means that only 3 will bother playing defense.

Anonymous said...

pretty sure mahtomedi boys have never won anything..mediocre?...
then again everyone thinks their school is going to win a title.

Apple Valley is the best team. I hope they lose cause they are all all pricks but they have a good high school squad. I don't think other then them it is had to say. Prior lake could be a sleeper team. Jefferson will be good but eden prairie will have its worst year ever. Stillwater will be above average but still a struggling team. South lost there 4 best player so good luck. Armstrong will have a good team they will be in the top 10 all season. Good luck to all!

Granson hawks...go ahead and rip of jefferson but no one in the state of minnesota has heard of you except for probably the 57 kids that actually go to your school. and 7 africans wont make a difference just cause they are african. ill give you props when u get third in state like jefferson did last year.

Anonymous said...

I see most have AV, EP, and Eagan in their top 10 lists. Does this mean it will be a shoot out between the 3 of them for the Lake Conference title in your minds? Any other Lake teams even stand a chance?

Anonymous said...

who can compete with St. Louis Park and St Paul Central in class A. I am not saying they are the 2 best teams but what are they doing in class A. And they must be at least favored to do well.

EDINA!!!!!

I think we are in store for more parity. I doubt South or Southwest will be anygood this year, but would like to see some of the city schools compete again. Maybe St. Paul Central?

Have no ideas how they've compiled this list.

Anonymous said...

SLP is class A this year...and isn't Central class A and Cretin as well? SLP was the only team in the top 10 preseason last year that made it to the final 4. 9:54 where did you get this, it's not on the mshssca website...?

Anonymous said...

Cretin is still AA
St Louis Park and Central are A

The pre season poll is voted on by the coaches at the coaching clinic sounds like many have not heard about Central and SLP changing classes because you are only supposed to vote for the teams in your class

Anonymous said...

The polls dont mean "jack!!!!". They are just to stroke the egos of the coaches. Not a single season game has been played. At the end of the season we will see who is the best. Until then the polls are a waste of time.

Anonymous said...

yeah the polls don't mean much, but they are fun. Relax!!!

Anonymous said...

doesn't everyone hate it when the kids/players join in.....

Anonymous said...

EASTRIDGE will win half their games in the first season ever for the school...no seniors but many quality premier players!

Anonymous said...

Any thoughts on the Classic Suburban Conference????

rickfrickindiculous said...

this dad/fan had a tough weekend. my son's club team was rock solid this spring and summer, hitting on all cylinders, playing a very pretty game. on saturday morning, i watched his team scrimmage two other west schools and one east school, and was so frustrated to see opportunity after opportunity wasted due to the resumption of the "boot ball" season.

looks like we're in for another ugly season. only nine more months 'til state cup!

Anonymous said...

RFD-I'm sorry to say, but welcome to my world.

Don't forget, the clock is occasionally stopped, but no extra time for out of bounds, slow subbing, time wasting. The rules are bastardized to fit whatever the high school league thinks is best, and the coaching is mediocre at most schools...oh, and the weather is awesome : )

Do your best to stay sane!

Anonymous said...

Is Mr Storlien going to the UK to be an assistant coach on the National team?

Anonymous said...

No, head coach or nothing for Nap. Dynamite

Anonymous said...

who are some of the Mr. Soccer candidates???

Anonymous said...

you gotta put Carlos from WBL on the list.

Anonymous said...

RFD and 4:30pm

Pretentious arsewipes. Get over yourselves. Most, no sorry, ALL of the kids love playing for their schools. Why dont you see if your Maradona wannabe wants to quit playing for his high school.

Oh and dont make me laugh about coaching. Most of you touchline plonkers dont have the first idea how to coach 'soccerball', but are always ready to criticize those who actually get off their rear ends and do something.

Just go back to your Eddie Bauer travel chairs, and your Caribou lattes, and your overpriced clubs, and personal conditioning trainers and leave this part of the blog for those who actually ENJOY watching their kids do something that they ENJOY doing.

Out of darkness cometh light.

Anonymous said...

ha! Well said 12:43pm!

Anonymous said...

So glad my kid is done with club and HS soccer. Won't mind at all going to Indiana to see a few games. Thank God it's over.

Anonymous said...

i"ve never heard of Eastridge but good luck. Its always cool to see those small schools do well

Anonymous said...

Eastridge is a new school built inbetween Cottage Grove and Woodbury as well as a new contender in a very difficult Suburban East Conference

Anonymous said...

12:43 Take your own advice and get over it yourself. Nobody made any suggestion that the kids don't enjoy it. And nobody suggested that they could do better-calm down.

Just reality, spring and summer soccer is head and shoulders better than MSHSL. In some cases C2 is better.

Anonymous said...

"pretentious arsewipes"?
"touchline plonkers"?

i read the post twice but couldn't find where you used the terms "spot on", "boots" or "clogger"......

i guess in my opinion your post was "rubbish".....

Anonymous said...

There goes the point 2:04..did you get it....no sorry mate I missed it completely.

My point was to take a dig at pretentious parents turning their noses up at the 'inferiority' of this sport that their kids are participating in and the indignity of having to 'suffer through another season'..and taking the opportunity to have a knock at the stereotypical Tahoe driving, latte sipping, upper middle class soccerball parent.

My POINT was you as a parent should enjoy watching your kid participating in something that they enjoy doing. If it really is torment for you then dont effing go to the game OK.

rickfrickindiculous said...

2:27 (the true pretentiously pompous one), perhaps you shouldn't be making half-assed (oops, I mean half-arsed) points if you continually have to go back and explain them to people. Think before you write, eh?

My kid loves playing for his school team, but I agree, it's horrible soccer to watch.

Plonkers to you to, matey!

P.S. Wanna know what number my kid is? #1 (duh!)

8:29 Again, lighten up, if you had a sense of humor you wouldn't be so wound up about the responses. Relax, just because you pretend to be Brit"ish" doesn't mean you understand anything or are better at anything Futbal. If you were, you'd still be in Europe.

MSHSSCA Boys AA Top 10
Sunday, August 23rd, 2009 (pre-season)

Someone asked about the ranking. I believe it was a poll that was taken by the varsity coaches in attendance at the MSHSSCA clinic and fall meeting.

As stated, next Poll comes out Labor Day; Monday, September 7th.

rickfrickindiculous said...

Futbal, soccerball, football. What the heck is the name of the game? And, is it "humor" or humour"? (you use both). Decide wheter you want to be a Brit or an American before you post your gibberish.

Overheard a bunch of parents from a west side club last weekend lamenting their need to choose a new DOC. A faction is pushing a group of Brits. This group was fearing the disaster that would be. Yah.

Remember the adage: If you can't play, coach. If you can't coach, coach in America.

Guys guys guys:

My original post was a piss take, a wind up, and OK a bit of a poke at a couple of the posters on here, and yes it was deliberately done using exaggerated English slang and manner of speech...because I knew that would get someone going (ta very much RFD).

The fact that half of you cant recognize this or cant respond in kind with anything remotely approximating wit is a mite disappointing. Now its all degenerated into a slanging match about whether 'Brits' can coach or play football and even whether the English football team is any good or not. Pathetic.

Incidentally if any of you do appreciate wit and are genuinely interested in the real game of football you could do worse than to subscribe to the 'Fiver' (todays version linked below). This column appears daily in The Guardian, a serious, broadsheet English newspaper.

http://football.guardian.co.uk/fiver/0,,415657,00.html

Or you could check out any of the blogs on their website too. Plenty of good exchanges on there.

Toodle pip.

Wayzata was better then EP

Wayzata 8-1 on Corners, more of the ball, and more scoring chances. I think EP will be down a little for their standard

Anonymous said...

Yes, Wayzata possessed, especially in the second half, but they were totally lost in the final 1/3 of the field. They had very little offensive creativity or firepower, and will struggle to find the back of the net.

St. Paul Central looked really good, though last night their individual stars weren't enough to overcome Stillwater's depth. Give Central a month to gel and they will be hard to beat.

Anonymous said...

Prior Lake 3 Burnsville 1

Prior Lake has more than a few young talents. A soph at center back, a soph at central mid, and a freshman who got good minutes at forward.

Bville looked a little disjointed at times, but had some good build ups too.

It's early, not clear what will come of either team.

I saw the Edina Cretin game and I was surprised that Edina played so many young players. They must have had jv kids suited up too cuz they had 20 extra kids on the bench? Cretin looked like the better team made less mistakes but Edina kept coming. 2nd half Edina started to control more of the play and had many scoring chances. The Cretin goal was on a bad play from Edina trying to clear and put it on the foot of a Cretin forward coming full speed. Edinas first goal was on PK due to hand ball in box. Edinas Jones scored the game winner on a steal at midfield and took it in for a rocket from 25yds out.

The MTA/DS haters are at it again.
You guys get must really get tired of watching him win at one of the smaller "AA" schools in the state as well as at MYSA State Cup every year.
You're way too transparent.

By the way...Prior Lake hasn't lost yet and have several sophomores and a freshman who are starting and play on the MTA U16 Midwest League team that won State Cup.

They're for real.

EP 4 BSM 2 but game was tied with five minutes to play. Did not see first half but the entire second half was boot ball at it's finest. No build up. Neither team will do much in the state tournament, even if they get there.

Anonymous said...

Prior Lake is better than Jefferson. They will go farther than Jags.

Anonymous said...

Is Mpls South overrated?
Lost Hopkins.

Anonymous said...

EP cake eaters should be ranked in Top 10. Beat ranked teams: #7 Wayzata, #3 Stillwater. Beat BSM too but they're Class 1A.

Maple Grove got spanked 1-0 by St. Louis Park. BTW, SLP lost to Simley. Who's SIMLEY???

Anonymous said...

I wouldn't say MG got "spanked" by SLP. They had by far the more scoring chances but their inability to finish really hurt them in the end. They also have a weaker defense then others and absolutely no bench. They outplayed but lost to a mediocre SLP team.

Anonymous said...

That's awesome--how do you spank someone 1-0? Both MG and SLP are a bit young for spanking. Both will be OK, but not good.

These early games are for crap. Teams still getting confidence, learning to play defense with each other, players sitting out suspensions for stupid summer stuff, etc...

Wait a few weeks.

On August 22 above, Mister Soccer appears to be onto something by putting Prior Lake in the top 10.

At Jefferson with a small student body, where is their top tier personnel coming from since they don't have much of a boys club program?

Anonymous said...

Jefferson has some players from the Blomington club U16 to U17 team that just earned premier this past summer.
They also have at least 1 player from the Apple Valley team who won state Cup this past summer and at least 2-3 players from MTA Midwest League teams.
They really aren't more than 11-12 players deep which could hurt them.

Anonymous said...

I believe Jefferson has 2 boys play on Apple Valley's U17 regional team.

Anonymous said...

Jefferson's best player is by far Ryan Goddard, a senior who plays in the middle.

Anonymous said...

Jefferson also has that monster named max, he's like 6'9". Good luck winning an air ball against him.

Is Totino-Grace the only Single A team in MN? If memory serves me correctly, T-G was ranked No. 1 going into sections, barely survived Monticello in PKs and lost to Blake in the final. And why does MN allow private schools to compete in the same class as public schools? Eight of the top ten Single A schools are private. Must be hard to compete against public schools when you can recruit, offer scholarships, and not live with residency requirements.

Anonymous said...

Technically, the private schools have their own division. It's called Class A.

Anonymous said...

3:01 Stupid and jealous is no way to go through life.

Look around, recruiting isn't happening. The private schools are accused of this every year, and every year they are found to have no violations. If you really want to see kids moving to play, look at the big public schools-kids leave to get playing time.

Scholarships-guess again, private schools offer some tuition help based on financial need, not sports or academics.

Yes, the same MSHSL rules apply to private schools. You do have to sit out a year if you transfer into a private school, just like you are supposed to in public.

AND, feel free to look at the private schools records against the big bad AA teams. Most do as well or better than many who you all claim are going to AA State Tournament. Get over it.

AV is too good and will take state championship.

WHERES ME-Xman?

Apple Valley keeps the clean sheet going after 4 games? That impressive! I realize they are playing fairly week teams, but still! They must have a rock solid D/goalkeeping.

prediction on edina vs. jefferson?

Anonymous said...

Jefferson, Edina beat Rosemount 2-0 tonight I'm not that impressed by that when Rosemounts best player isnt even playing this year.

Anonymous said...

How was EP and Edina not ranked by the coaches preseason.

1 AV 3-0
2 EP 3-0
3 MPLS SW 2-0
4 Woodbury 2-0
5 Eagan 2-0-1
6 Jefferson2-0-1
7 Osseo 1-0-1
8 Edina 3-0
9 Coon Rapids 2-0-1
10 Prior Lake 2-0-1
11 Cretin 3-1
12 Stillwater 0-1-1
13 Anoka 2-0-1
14 Mtonka 3-0-1
15 Lakeville South 2-0

Very few teams without a tie or a loss and we are not even 5 games in yet. Should be fun.

3 (AV, EDINA, and WDBY) of the preseason top 15 without a loss or tie. Add in SW and EP and that is only 5. You have a few others like Lakeville South and Shakopee but I am not picking them for the top 10 yet. So only 7 on the AA schools without a loss. I bet by the end of next week we will have played 6 or 7 games and 1 or 2 teams will be perfect.

AV vs EP first day of school.

Anonymous said...

AV vs EP. Somebody gonna give. I'll put my money on AV. AV will be the team to beat this fall.

Anonymous said...

EP has already knocked off three ranked teams this year. who has AV played??

Anonymous said...

Thu, Aug 27 7:00 PM Owatonna W 1-0
Sat, Aug 29 5:00 PM Hastings W 10-0
Tue, Sep 1 7:00 PM Park of Cottage Grove W 3-0
Wed, Sep 2 7:00 PM Richfield W 9-0

Total goals for: 23
Total goals against: 0

Take that EP!

Anonymous said...

EP was tied to BSM 2-2 up until the 75th minute, then they sealed the game with 2 goals in the final 5 minutes. If they let BSM play with them for that long their is no way they will be able to keep up with AV's depth. Plus if I remember correctly, EP was one of 2 teams that handed AV a loss last year so I'm sure they are going to play their hardest to not let that happen again.

Anonymous said...

Beating pre-season ranked teams doesn't mean alot those means could be .500 comes season end.

Anonymous said...

EP struggled with BSM and was not very impressive. AV will double up EP, at least 4-2.

Anonymous said...

Why would AV play the teams that they have played so far??? You know you are going to be great this year, I understand some section opponents but go play the very best teams. They are not getting better by winning 10-0 and 9-0

Anonymous said...

It's for the ego and then get crushed.

Anonymous said...

EP struggled to beat BSM. A lot of boot ball from both sides. AV will at least double up on EP 4-2.
