'09 Girls HS Season

With coaches practice started at most high schools, the excitement for the 2009 MN high school season is upon us. Should be a great year for HS soccer with many very strong U16, U17 and U18 girls club teams.

I agree. High school soccer is a great experience, from the warm up music pumping from the speakers to the playing of the national anthem, having your name called on the field, and school mates in the bleachers cheering you on. From my experience, my daughter's club coaches have recommended that girls should stay with the club team if they don't make JV or Varsity, but if they do, they should play high school. And, this is coming from MTA Coaches and even the DOC. I am only aware of one excpetion when a coach has recommended to players not to do high school ball, and it was a team of 7th and 8th graders.

This year at the USA Cup 3 of players received packets from the U of M at Moorehead. I would like to echo the thougths of High School not even being on the radar of most college scouts. When they scout I believe they go to summer tournaments, showcase tournaments or the USA Cup if they want to find quality talent. And not....no offense but a Tartan, Roseville game is not going to attract a single scout. To many C2 and C3 players make Varsity just to field a team for the school.

Anonymous said...

Is Aboud the coach for the girls at the new Eastridge High School?
Why are they 0-2 to start the season?

Anonymous said...

12:01, maybe, but what I am saying is that it is not about getting recruited. It is about school spirit, having fun with friends, being in a large stadium with parents and friends watching. MN high school soccer is in the fall, and college coaches are busy with their own teams that time of year. I would argue that a Tartan game would attrach a scout. They have at least two talented sophomores, and I am sure there will be interest, maybe not this year but certainly next year.

Seriously, enough of the ACL/MCL and club vs. high school posts. Lets focus on and value high school soccer for what it is. Looking forward to more posts about how the beginning of the season is shaping up for teams, conferences, and sections.

12:12,
You just can't let it go can you?
You should really just try to stop all your hating before it consumes you.

1051- name ONE elite club player that is not playing HS ball due to "boredom". Your comment may be the dumbest I have read on this blog, which is saying something.

Please back up your nonsense with a tact of two

Anonymous said...

I don't know about 10:51 and "boredom," but as a parent I am not sure that playing year round soccer during the 14-18 ages is balanced. There is also a lot more to the HS experience than pep bands and listening to loudspeaker announcements. Elite players might enjoy some of those things, if they had the time.

The Illinois approach (skip HS to get more training with the club) is even worse. But they do seem to do better at Regions . . .

Can't wait to see the Class A girls ranking come out this Sunday. Holy Angeles has yet to win a game and they were ranked 2nd. Totino-Grace is rated 4th and they are also struggling. Breck (rated 5th) they haven't won a game either. Kind of fun to see some new teams rise to the top this year.

Anonymous said...

The Tri-Metro appears to have a strong set of teams (SPA, St. Croix, Breck, Blake, Vis, Minnehaha) this year. Both Minnehaha and Blake, who was expected to be in a serious rebuilding year, have already knocked off Holy Angels. Lots of parity in class A. Benilde may be the team to beat?

Anonymous said...

Breck does not have a goalie yet. 3 goals from BSM were on set pieces, an area where Breck needs more practice.
The score against Trinity does not reflect the play. Breck dominated, but couldn't score a goal - again Breck needs to solidify a decent goalie.

Anonymous said...

I know of one 2010 Big Ten scholarship athlete who passed on the hs season to train individually. Some elite kids use the hs season as a way to decompress from the club/travel training regime and have some fun - others only enjoy the intense training - to each his own! I agree - most kids will play hs and finally get some of the recognition in the local media that they never get from playing club soccer. The only time that club soccer teams make the news is if a coach cheats - it seems!

Anonymous said...

2:07 Have a hard time believing you. was this "passing on HS season" a result of an injury. If not name the school said player would attend. Simply do not believe that kids are skipping HS ball to "train on there own" or do not play due to "boredom". I have never seen a HS player that was so completely dominant that the HS season was "boring"

Anonymous said...

2:07
It only happens when they cheat to "lose"....not cheat to "win" which is much more common.

Anonymous said...

2:07 is correct. There is a west metro player sitting out this fall to supposedly get ready for a Big 10 season next August. Is that the only reason she is sitting out? Don't know???

Anonymous said...

12:12 If you really want to know why East Ridge is 0-2, they have no seniors, and new kids, new coach, early in the season, etc. No excuses just reality-girls are just plain stronger on the ball as seniors, a few would change this group.

Yes, I have seen them play. They will be very good if they continue to play the style they did the day I saw them play. They need to grow up and mature, but MA is coaching them to have a great first touch on the ball and play smart. It will happen for them if he and the girls stick with it.

No I'm not an MA backer, I also do not have a daughter.

Anonymous said...

426, Mark nice to hear from you on the blog. reality-girls gave you away. Actually the dash in between the two words is what did it. Good Luck this season.

Anonymous said...

Heard the west metro gal was going to play tennis for her school. Looked out at the roster and didn't see her name there either.

Anonymous said...

At 4:26 in the afternoon, don't you think MA is at practice and not blogging on here?

Anonymous said...

2:21 Look back at 2:07 remarks. He never said anything about 'boring' - that was all you.

Relax... let different people make different decisions without getting your tidy whities in a bunch. Let the girl do what she thinks is best for her...just because your high school days were your glory days doesn't mean they have to be to everyone else. Perhaps she is looking beyond her senior year and thought this would be better for her. After all, I bet she has already played 3 years of high school - so she might know what she is missing.

BTW: 'train on there own' IF used correctly would have been 'trained on their own' and frankly the quotes were unnecessary since you were quoting yourself.

Anonymous said...

any word on Eagan Woodbury game? 2-0 Wdbry but how was the play?

Anonymous said...

1st half was pretty even - a few scoring chances for each side. Eagan keeper made one very nice save. Woodbury scored off of a long lollipop cross - nice finish - defensive breakdown.

Woodbury tightened up the defense and controlled the midfield and the play in the second half. Nothing really dangerous for either side - 2nd goal came with a minute left.

Both teams have a lot of speed that neutralized most chances.

Anonymous said...

I saw Mahtomedi's first 2 games (3-0 wins over both Central and North)...played entire bench throughout both games, including JV pullups...they will be in the hunt for the Class A title again (particularly by year-end as younger players gain experience).

Anonymous said...

AA title goes through Woodbury (5 state titles), A title goes through Mahtomedi (6 state titles)until proven otherwise.

Woodbury - strong and experienced
Mahtomedi - young, but talented

Anonymous said...

Mahtomedi seems to play everyone in every game. I did not see their games, but did they wear the other teams out? Did they play fast?

Anonymous said...

Mahtomedi is not all that. They have 22 players on their team. So essentially 2 teams in one, so they can sub out 5/6 girls at a time....so they are always fresh. They do have a good back 4 which keeps them in the game. But the center and outside mids and the 2 forwards....meh!!!

Folks lets remember we are talking high school soccer. Very fun for the kids but ugly to watch.

Anonymous said...

Any good games tonight?

Anonymous said...

Very ugly to watch. Good players play down to the level of the other players on the team during the HS Season.

You take what you get from high school soccer. It is about the atmosphere the stadiums bring with the bleachers, the fans and having your name called out, and playing with your friends.
At the end of the season no one gives a rip you won each Section or not, or if they do remember they forget after a week.
Cant wait until its over so we can get back to club training.

Really, I can remember my daughter and her friends crying when HS ended and cringing at the fact that they were back at it with good old Bangu! Why do most club parents (MTA formerly Bangu) feel the need to bash HS soccer, it is a wonderful experience and good for the kids. As for forgetting who wins the section after a week, ask someone who has played in the dome, they remember for a lifetime.

Anonymous said...

My daughter has played soccer in around eleven states, has been recruited by many schools at the very top college level and has never played in the Dome. She would be thrilled to finally be able to do just that in a couple of months. True, it's not club soccer, but, just the same she's very envious of her club teammates who have had the thrill of playing there.

Tartan over Mahtomedi 2-1

Anonymous said...

5:58 - good joke. I think Tartan only won one game last year. Probably more like Mahtomedi 8 Tartan 0

Anonymous said...

Unless the online score is incorrect, Tartan over Mahto 2-1, not a joke.

Anonymous said...

What happened to Woodbury? Only 1-0 over CDH?

Anonymous said...

Looks like the Tartan vs. Mahto score is correct given it is posted on the MSHSL site as well. What a shocker!

Anonymous said...

Wow, I would have like to have been at that game. Did Tartan play that well or did Mahtomedi take them for granted?

I did see Roseville play Tartan and they (Tartan) looked like they were in for a long season. They have a really good mid fielder and a big forwad who can strike the ball, but not whole lot more that stood out that day. Roseville won that game 4-0.

Good for Tartan, that should help them build some confidence.

Anonymous said...

I was at that game my daughter plays for Mahtomedi.

I have to admit, Tartan played a really good game. They had the best of things in the first half. Mahtomedi came to life in the second half, but they were down 2-0 early in the second half and had a steep hill to climb to get back in. Tartan looks like they've grown as a team from last year.

Tartan has a pretty solid core of sophomores. Their center mid is one of the better sophomore mid-fielders i've seen. Everything seemed to run through her, she distributes the ball well. I think they have more than the person above said. Thier big forward did have both goals, I think she's a sophomore too. As a team, Tartan possesed, moved the ball well and played hard.

Mahtomedi has several chances, but couldn't finish on target. They pounded hard toward the end of the game and almost tied it with 50 seconds left. Not to take anything away from Tartan, but I thought Mahtomedi looked flat in the first half, came out strong in the second, but had some lapses. They are capable of better play.

Anonymous said...

After Mahto, Holy Angels, and Orono losses, it is clear that the Tri Metro possesses real strength in class A this year. It will be interesting to see how things shake out between Minnehaha, Breck, Blake, Vis, SPA, and St. Croix. It appears that Benilde should now be considered the top team in class A.

Anonymous said...

Woodbury has six goals in four games -- not the powerhouse everyone expected. AA is up for grabs. A is BSM and everyone else.

Anonymous said...

I think the door is wide open for Hill.

Anonymous said...

I think the door is wide open for Hill.

Anonymous said...

833 is Tartan's center mids parent. Welcome back to the blog, haven't heard you on the blog since you were talking about her ability on her club team a while back.

Anonymous said...

10:04 Nope, wrong again.

Anonymous said...

I love it. Someone compliments an opposing player and team and suddenly the person is talking about their kid. Typical response by someone who probably brags on their daughter.

Anonymous said...

Woodbury's defense is disorganized with one strong player doing the whole job.The door is wide open but me sees it as Edina. they will dominate...Hill will give em a run though.

Anonymous said...

Hill is not deep enough. Edina has a couple of good players, but mediocre everywhere else. This year, no one seemes dominant or truly impressive. Woodbury will win narrowly, with the best defender in the State keeping other teams off the board.

Anonymous said...

Anyone see the North South Saint Paul Game? Thoughts?

Anonymous said...

Have seen North and South Saint Paul play, and neither of them will do anything but beat up on the weaker teams in their conference to make their win-loss record look better than it should be. That whole conference should be blown up and redistributed. The only decent teams are Hill and Mahtomedi, and the latter is obviously down this year as well. Hill will win the conference going away, beating North and South Saint Paul by 5 goals each time they play them. I'm not bashing any teams, that's just the way I see that conference. Any conference that has games that are routinely won by 5+ goals should be rebalanced somehow, nobody gets anything out of that.

Anonymous said...

Great post,12:54pm.
I would assume North has some talent but will never be a soccer powerhouse in the Classic Suburban Conference.
I would assume North is a mishmash of C3, C2 with a sprinkling of actual C1 talent on the team?

Anonymous said...

1254 - Mahtomedi lost to Tartan last night 2-1.

Anonymous said...

1254, where does your super star play??

Anonymous said...

AA
Edina, EP, WDBRY, WZTA anyone can win. No dominant team.

A
BSM and the rest with MAHTO seeing its run of gory come to an end and other usual powers down a bit. Do not rule out Orono they have a 7th grader starting for them from what I hear and she can play

Anonymous said...

That section should be fun to watch. BSM, Orono, Breck and SLP all have a chance to advance to state out of that section this year.

Anonymous said...

Yes, there will finally be a section as difficult as the one with Holy Angels, Vis, Blake, Minnehaha, SPA, etc.

Anonymous said...

10:04/1:43
Why do you care?

Anonymous said...

true, until last year it was pretty much a BSM walkthrough.
what we will start to see is a few outer ring schools (Orono, STM, Rogers, etc...) grow in strength as their schools grow in numbers. what eventually happens is they grow too big and then have to become AA.

Anonymous said...

Edina may be strong, but the way they run up the score on weaker opponents is pretty sad. One of their players (not JS by the way) scored 4 goals against a weak A school (Holy Family) and 5 goals against an average at best AA school (Champlin Park). This player is apparently a top Div I hockey recruit and she throws defenders out of the way while the Edina coach rags on the refs non-stop if anyone breaths on one of his players. Beating up overmatched opponents may look good on the stat sheet, but it doesn't earn any respect. Classless program.

Anonymous said...

for seniors they're called 'going away" stats. last chance for glory.........

Anonymous said...

6:08 Say what you want, but both games were played with the 2nd string for most of the second half. What did you want the coach to do? Tell the girls to stand there and not try. Give me a break.

Anonymous said...

does anyone know the results for the Woodbury Mahtomedi game tonight.

Anonymous said...

5-0 Woodbury

Anonymous said...

Thanks, how did Woodbury look tonight

Anonymous said...

5-0!!!! how classless that they ran it up............just kidding, but I thought I would beat someone to it.

Anonymous said...

At 5 goals my daughters coach makes them score on a header, that is how you control the score

Anonymous said...

I keep hearing that Mah. is loaded with tallent and Woodbury isnt that great this year. What happened?

Anonymous said...

It looks like Mahtomedi has fallen back to the pack. Losing to Tartan, barely beating North and 5-0 against Woodbury.

Anonymous said...

strong class A teams generally don't have the depth that the bigger class AA schools have so losing a few top kids to graduation (or having a couple of strong incoming kids) can have quite an impact. last year was Blake/TG, this year it looks like Mahto/HA.
i also think tartan, etc... are much improved.

Anonymous said...

I think you have it backwards - Woodbury is loaded with talent, and Mahto isn't that great this year.

Anonymous said...

Please don't compare A soccer with AA.

Anonymous said...

Wayzata seems to respect class A and Mpls soccer -- they scheduled 5 or 6 games against them in a short HS season.

Anonymous said...

Wayzata should not be playing the MPLS schools and weak class A teams. Edina should not be doing this either. Go play the teams with large enrollments like your own schools. Its fine to play A schools if they are at the top of Class A, but dont play teams to pad stats that is not right. When was the last time a top athlete wanted to play weak competition. When you hear Roger Federer talk about Nadal and wanting Nadal to get back to top form because of their great matches and competition. That is what the best players want. I know a tennis analogy, its okay, just making a point. Try not to go on a ten post rant about this is soccer and not tennis, its an analogy.

Anonymous said...

Agree with 5:49...Wayzata & Edina get as far as they do in wins due to weak competition & playing class a schools.

Anonymous said...

549 and 859... when you schedule teams for the current season (6months ago), what criteria do YOU use for who you play?
other than holy family (which i imagine was a favor to jt) edina has so far played teams that finished in the top 12 of last year's final ranking poll. upcoming is roch cent, woodbury, armstrong (x2), wayzata (x2), mtka (x2), wbl and duluth east. cream puffs? i think not.

Anonymous said...

The reason your question has not been answered is because THERE ARE NO GOOD HS SOCCER GAMES.

Anonymous said...

then go away and quit wasting yours and everyone else's time on this thread.

Anonymous said...

Blake vs. SPA today should be a good Tri-Metro class A matchup

Anonymous said...

how many "great" club games are there? I have seen premier play at all levels and it is not much better then HS ball. You have to get to the Midwest League or regions to see really great soccer. The way in which club parents see their play is ludicrous and way over the top, stop thinking your girls are on their way to the world cup, let them enjoy HS soccer and just keep your mouth shut. We are all so happy little Suzy made the MTA squad this year, be proud but stop bashing everyone else. ENJOY THE SEASON.

Anonymous said...

The Simley / Mahtomedi game today should also be good. IMO Mahtomedi should have dropped in the rankings and Simley should have taken a spot in the top ten.

Anonymous said...

Agreed, rankings should be taken with a grain of salt based on limited input and input that is provided without much research. Thanks to those of you backing the legitimacy of HS soccer, because it is really important to a large number of kids.

Anonymous said...

11:34,
I actually saw a very good boys HS game last week.
I watched Prior Lake vs Jefferson and even though both teams were very young with numerous underclassmen as starters they played a nice style of soccer with very little of the typical HS bootball.

I saw the NSP/Tartan game. If that Tartan team was able to beat Mahtomedi, Mahtomedi is in trouble this year. North dominated for most of the game. I did not see anything special from Tartan.

Anonymous said...

AV 1 EP 2. AV scored 1 of EP's goals. It could have gone either way. Great game to watch.

Anonymous said...

Does North Saint Paul have any quality players? Or is Tartan not a very good team? How did Tartan beat Mahtomedi?????

Anonymous said...

Are you serious about the AV-EP game? EP controlled the game. AV's keeper had a great game. Should have been a blow out.

Anonymous said...

could it have possibly been an upset?? it does happen every once in a while that a team with what is perceived to be lesser skilled players beats a team with better players - especially in soccer where the score can really dictate your style/formations.

Anonymous said...

7:35 Yes North has some quality players. Just a bad game against Mahtomedi

Anonymous said...

think about it, WHY ask if north has any quality players they won MAH sp why ask.

Keep in mind that Apple Valley has tradionally one of states toughest defenses along with Park of Cottage Grove and home grown top notch goal tenders because of coaches nuturing.

Brandt - D1 Hockey prospect as a 9th grader (now a soph) very fast, explosive & powerful shot...very dangerous

Ley - SR, also a good hockey player, but a better soccer player....good playmaker at the attack point..great vision...tall, good in the air

Voeller - SR, daughter of soccer family (dad coached) sister graduated last year...solid all around game

Savino - SR, also has a younger sister on the team...good midfielder...good passer, nice shot, good size

Good offensive team....worth watching...on the verge of a breakout year

Who cares that someone plays hockey or that they got a sister on the team. Please leave the bragging off the blog especially when they didn't back it up on the field.

11:20....you're nuts, and not in a good way.

I am not a fan of private schools (we've lost athletes to them in some sports)or Hill in particular.

I have seen that group play for several years now and think they are good (despite their stmble last night)....time will tell.

Conspiracy theorists like you make these blogs less enjoyable. Thanks.

Is Blake for real in class A? There were several earlier posts that stated they were very down and doing some seriously rebuilding with a real young squad. However, they have now beaten the likes of AHA, SPA, and Minnehaha. Although rankings are many times questionable, the fact they have gone from unmentioned to highly ranked almost seems legit. Didn't expect those results I guess.

Anonymous said...

Blake graduated a lot of players - something like 12 girls from last year's team. Young team this year, so probably didn't make the list of teams to watch.

Anonymous said...

I don't think you are going to know how good they truly are until they face Breck and Orono. Their schedule has been pretty weak so far, as AHA is without their star player due to an ACL injury.

Anonymous said...

Yeah, AHA is not the same team this year, but SPA and Minnehaha are better than they have been in years. I'm impressed by the fact Blake got through those two teams with victories.

Anonymous said...

Breck seems to be very up and down, and Orono hasn't played anyone but Breck, and lost to them. It will be interesting to see how a very strong Tri-Metro shakes out. IMO SPA, Minnehaha, Breck, or it seems now Blake, could win it.

Anonymous said...

I'd also put Eagan over Wayzata.

Anonymous said...

Minnehaha had some bad luck against Blake...Black got 2 goals on set pieces in last 17 minutes, one after a questionable call. Not saying Blake didn't deserve it, just that MA controlled most of the game and just couldn't find the back of the net in numerous shots on goal (outshot Blake 2 to 1). Hope they get a rematch in playoffs ;)

Anonymous said...

The Minnehaha vs. Blake game was a tale of two different halves. Minnehaha took it to Blake in the firt half, and Blake returned the favor in the second half. Two very solid teams for sure, but they couldn't be more different in terms of experience with Blake having 11 girls on their team 10th grade and younger, and only 2 seniors.

Anonymous said...

I'm a Blake fan, and was quite impressed with both SPA and Minnehaha. They both have very strong teams. It will be interesting to see how their match turns out. Section 3A will once again be a battle. At the same time I absolutely cannot believe how well Blake is doing so far this year. Kudos to the girls and coaches.

Anonymous said...

having seen just about everyone in class A, BSM is without a doubt the strongest team. good depth, solid defense, strong gk, a few above average offensive threats. it would surprise me not to see them in the finals in the dome. they took 3rd last year (losing the semi-finals to aha in ot) returned just about everyone plus some kids who were out due to injuries, and benefit by the finalists from last year taking a step backward.

Anonymous said...

BSM also has a tough section with Breck, Orono, and SLP. Maybe one equally as tough as 3A for once? Breck seems to be gaining momentum.

Anonymous said...

Agree with 2:49 on BSM - they have a very strong team this year and should do well

Anonymous said...

bsm easily handled breck the first time they played (scored 4 goals in the first half and then coasted in). the same breck team that beat orono. not sure about slp.
the tough thing about class A is except for the tri-metro league games, so many teams hardly playing any meaningful competition.
i believe bsm plays wayzata tomorrow which should be a good game.

Anonymous said...

Wayzata by at least two.

Anonymous said...

2:22

Come on, I would say half the calls the ref made in the Blake/Minnehaha game were questionable, he was awful. Minnehaha was awarded more dead balls in the vicinity of the Blake box anyway. Bottom line, Blake capitalized on their opportunities, Minnehaha didn't, no luck involved.

Anonymous said...

12:39 - playing AHA, SPA, and Minnehaha (all ranked teams) in three of your first six games in my mind doesn't qualify as a weak schedule in class A (see 3:16 post above). I don't think you will find many class A teams with tougher schedules to start. Nonetheless, Blake will definitely show their true colors as they continue onward with Vis, Breck and Orono. Good luck to all!

Anonymous said...

Looking at the top five teams seems to be lack of Minnesota Thunder Academy players Woodbury Edina Wayzata Eden Prairie and Coon Rapids ...whats up how can this be so . Is their no kettles to past around to the parents and no financial incentives left to explore. Oh but with post season recognitions around the corner am sure their elves will be hard at work behind the scenes. Apparently when the name change occured the pot of gold left the building.

Perhaps the elves obtuse discussions spewed about more and more high school players not playing high school soccer was the cover story for MTA first foray into the U.S Soccer Academy proposals for a league here and kids playing and foregoing the high school experience. Stay tune for more proganda.

Anonymous said...

Only club player of any significance not playing high school didn't even play for MTA.

Anonymous said...

SPA plays Stillwater tomorrow night. Quite the contrast in school size!

Anonymous said...

We already went over the fact some girls are deciding to skip hs! Now back to some scores and interesting games please?

Anonymous said...

Tomorrow

Wayzata-Benilde
WBL-Hill Murray
Edina-Woodbury

Anonymous said...

reliving the glory days, huh? Don't want to talk about why they would skip HS?

Anonymous said...

11:56 Breaking news - This is a HS soccer thread. By definition, those players not playing HS soccer are not part of the discussion. Those bloggers discussing players not playing HS soccer should find another thread.

Anonymous said...

Edina Woodbury game should be a good match to watch.

Anonymous said...

Why would there be a whole thread for one or two individuals that aren't playing HS soccer due to injury?

Anonymous said...

It would be nice to find another thread for club teams who are continuing to play, but there isn't one.

How about opening up a thread for club discussion that doesn't have to do with an SCV boys team formation three years ago?

Anonymous said...

I guess that since the majority of players are playing HS, that means that all the club news and happenings are taking place?

MTA boys are in Rockford right now for MRL, as are SSM U17 girls.

How about opening a thread to discuss? Or can't that happen because the community club teams aren't participating because they want to make their community proud? This forum is an absolute joke, as is MYSA and high school soccer.

Woodbury v. Edina reports and comments?

Hey buddy from 5:45---no one cares about your MTA little punks.

Anonymous said...

How did the SPA vs. Stillwater match turn out?

Anonymous said...

1-0 Woodbury.

Anonymous said...

Looks like BSM held tough with Wayzata.

Anonymous said...

I know that the JV team won 3 to 0, not sure what the Varsity did tonight.

Anonymous said...

5:45 here. I guess you are right that a JV match report is much more important in the world of soccer than anyone playing a Regional league against the best that an 8 State Region has to offer. You're right. I'll bow out while you discuss junior varsity scores......that is in fact a huge statement about the state of MN soccer.

All I was asking for was a new topic that we could discuss club goings on/results. But, you're right. We shouldn't distract from the all important junior varsity results.

Anonymous said...

How did the "sleeper" H-M do against WBL today?

Anonymous said...

9:33 I was just addressing how the game went. If your so hell bent on discussing your club soccer leave and go onto another thread this is for highschool not club

Anonymous said...

9:17 4-1 Stillwater

Anonymous said...

Woodbury 1 Edina 0

Back and forth all night. CS out in the first five minutes with a rolled ankle. AD scored on a scrum in the box. Excepted more out of Edina's forwards.

Anonymous said...

welcome to the suburban east

Anonymous said...

H-M 1
WBL 4

Anonymous said...

9:33 - I've got an idea......since from what I understand their are three (3) teams playing FIRST Division MRL, maybe the blog guy could set up a separate thread for each team? Since there are so few it wouldn't be too much trouble.

Woodbury should get props for their non-conference schedule this year. I have seen them dissed in previous years. EP, Edina, Coon Rapids, Eagan, and Jefferson (all top ten ranked teams) are on their schedule, and they have won all of the games played to date.

Also, I agree the Suburban East is a tough league. Woodbury, Park, MV, WBL, and Stillwater are all upper-echelon teams. I would put those five on a par with the top 5 or 6 in the Lake.

My top 10 would be Woodbury, EP, Edina, Eagan, Coon Rapids, Jefferson, Stillwater, Burnsville, Wayzata, White Bear.

Any comments on BSM Wayzata game?

Anonymous said...

Anyone catch the Holy Angels vs. Mahtomedi match? Thoughts? Overall, seems Mahtomedi is no where even close to being where they have been in recent past.

How about Benilde vs. Wayzata?

These games give a nice barometer for where class A rankings should stand.

Anonymous said...

IMO, having seen class A, there is a clear separation between BSM and everyone else.

Anonymous said...

I still can't belive that there are idiots out there that claim all these high level players are skipping HS soccer. Is there one? Maybe, the rest are out for injury.

Why EP behind Edina when they tied Woodbury and Edina loses to woodbury?

Anonymous said...

Another team to watch in the tri-metro conference are the Blake Bears. It shows that even the 8 returning players are helping lead to many big victories! This conference is one of the toughest in the state and this is a good year to watch all of these newer teams rise to the top!

Anonymous said...

11:27 - is that a new poll or last weeks?

Anonymous said...

new poll, not enough coaches vote on that thing, from what I hear

Anonymous said...

where do you find this new poll?

Anonymous said...

BSM is lightyears ahead of the rest... Blake, AHA, and Mahtomedi are all super young... Minnehaha has lots of experience but not nearly the same level of talent as BSM, haven't seen any of the others out there.

I saw the AHA v Mahtomedi game, Zephyers probably had the better of the play but I wouldn't say they dominated, AHA had multiple chances, which is weird because with the injuries they've had they have absolutely ZERO attack right now. My impression of the great "state rematch" is that both teams have bright futures, but neither will be back in the big game this year. I also saw the AHA v BSM game Wednesday (I went to both nights of the challenge cup). BSM was up 2-0 after 11 minutes, game ended 2-0, AHA keeper with two absolute shockers, though after the goals the AHA team did well not to get blown off the field by a vastly superior BSM team.

Anonymous said...

why no respect for Orono?

Anonymous said...

exciting game in at the old litter box tonight jeffertson and LS tie 4-4 in OT. A few GREAT goals (a couple of bad ones) and lots of end to end action. If JEFF can learn to defend they will be dangerous two gret attacking players with Wirth really making things happen

Anonymous said...

9:57...probably because they lost to breck which lost to bsm. running up scores on glencoe-silver lake, watertown/mayer, and meadow creek christian, while also beating st. john's prep might not have too much weight out there. not saying they aren't a good team (as i know they are very young), just not in the same league as bsm this year.

Anonymous said...

And the fact that Orono has played awful boot ball with their back sweeper kicking the ball out whenever it gets in her 5 yard radius. This has happened for the past 4 years. They play with no control..sorry, just stating the facts.

BSM deserves to be on top. SPA way too low. Mahtomedi way too high. Totino, really? Blake a real surprise and sleeper in Tri-Metro.

Sept. 15, 2009

1.Benilde-St. Margaret's
2.Blake
3.Mahtomedi
4.Minnehaha Academy
5.Orono

No more pollster love for Wayzata after a regulation tie with BSM and a OT Tie with Mpls Southwest. Drop them from the top 10.

Anonymous said...

they tied armstrong 0-0 also.

ems

Anonymous said...

Maybe a few hiccups, but their roster is loaded with players from PSA U17(#1 in Premier), Wayzata U17 (#2 in Premier), Wayzata U16 (State Cup Champs), and a couple of players from Inferno and EP club teams for good measure. That should be enough for at least a top 3 finish in HS.

Anonymous said...

if you look at the polls over the last 5-7 years, it's pretty much the same schools every year just in different orders. To take it even farther, how many different teams have actually gone to the dome (semi-finalists) over the last 7 years?
AA - WDB, EP, LS, ED, WAYZ, EASTV, RA, ????
A - MAHT, TG, BLAKE, AHA, BSM, ????
Before they started seeding the teams there might have been a few others as two top teams might have met up in the first round, but i would bet 90% of folks out there could predict who will win the sections before the season starts.
The toughest thing with class A is that I believe 8 of the current top 10 are in just two sections which usually allows for a rochester team to make it.

Anonymous said...

This is true for most sports.

agree time to make wayzata earn the ranking and not just live off the reputation. results are what matters not how many club studs they have. you cannot have those results and call yourself a top 5 team.

Anonymous said...

anyone go to the BSM/Orono match last night?

Must have been good.

Anonymous said...

having seen the 3-2 score of bsm over orono, you would now have to include them in the mix. don't have any details on the game, but based on the score it sounds like a good match.

Anonymous said...

Wayzata has no current inferno players.

Many posts refer to the poor quality of play at the high school level. I think they are correct, the play level in high schols is not great in MN. I checked the Midwest league web page and could only locate four teams from MN playing this fall.

U-14 boys - MTA Blue (3-1) MTA wht (0-2-2).

U-14 girls - Dakota Rev Rampage 2-1

U-17 girls SSM 1-1

Most other surrounding states have many teams at each age group. I understand we play high school ball in the fall and many top players want to play for their school but what about the U-14 age group? These kids aren't playing Varsity sports yet(I suppose there may be a few exceptions)but why no commitment to play soccer in the fall. It should not surprise anyone that MN soccer faces huge challenges regionally when of the 12 U-14 MYSA premier teams only 3 are playing in the fall?

Anonymous said...

They ARE playing in the fall. They are playing for their school teams.

Anonymous said...

12:42 - when all of our teams are playing MRL in the spring, hopefully you will post your comments on all the soccer blogs in the states that play spring high school ball (which except for a few IL teams are all the fall MRL teams).

Anonymous said...

Actually, there are a fair number of middle school students playing varsity soccer throughout the state. We typically have several 8th graders on our varsity team, and occasionally a 7th grader. And, these girls tend to be the ones on the premier teams in their age group.

Anonymous said...

Let's break it down by W-L-T as of last night:

1.BMS 6-1
2.Blake 5-0
3.Mahtomedi 4-3-1
4.Minnehaha Academy 4-2
5.Orono 5-2
6.Breck 4-2-1
7.St. Louis Park 4-0-2
8.Totino Grace 3-1-1
9.Holy Angels 3-4-2
10.St. Paul Academy 2-3-1

So going by the numbers, Mahtomedi doesn't deserve to be number 3. Way too many losses. SLP hasn't lost a game and got dropped from 6th to 7th?? Totino started out poorly, but is now improving. AHA and SPA shouldn't be on the list at all. Do the high school coaches that vote only go on school recognition and not on what the school's record really is?

Anonymous said...

Maybe it has something to do with whom they've played. I'm guessing Mahtomedi has played far superior teams than the other schools listed above and below them.

Anonymous said...

Orono has 4 girls in the top 50 with most goals scored (more than any other school) and their goalie is one of the top 30 - regardless of A or AA. They should be moved up.

Anonymous said...

Who are they scoring their goals against. I'm guessing their goal totals wouldn't be so high if they weren't playing cream puffs.

Anonymous said...

My twelve year old hits the net from 50' 19 out of 20 times with no defenders in front of her. Not much different than most of the "A" school matches.

Anonymous said...

SPA is better than half the teams in the top 10 despite their record. There is much more telling info. than overall record.

Anonymous said...

Which is what 3:36? Do tell...

Anonymous said...

I'm not 336, but I would guess quality of opponents.

Anonymous said...

3:10 - you are absolutely correct. Let's look at the opponents.......

Orono 9 - Glencoe/Silver Lake 0
Orono 9 - Meadow Creek Christian 0
Orono 9 - Watertown-Mayer 0

time will tell, but i wouldn't hang you hat on those wins and totals.

methinks this might be the first year you've had a daughter on the varsity?

Anonymous said...

SPA has played three AA schools (Cretin, Stillwater and Northfield). Those games were two losses and a tie. Strength of schedule does matter come playoff time.
