'09 Boys HS Season

The 2008 boys high school season had a lot of parity with many very good teams. Who will emerge as this years champion?

Eric Miller was included in the U14 National Player pool but has never been included on the National Team-he has been on the Minnesota 93 ODP team and the 93 Region II team the last 3 years. He plays Club soccer for MTA and is a junior and a nice boy-and I know because I am his Mom!Go Royals!

Anonymous said...

Wow, 4 of the top 10 based on that are in 3AA, 5 are in the Lake Conference.

Anonymous said...

nice Eric's mom! lot's of good players and kids out there. There should be some good games out there tonight!

Anonymous said...

QRF stands for Quality Results Formula it does not define strength of schedule, but the results within in the schedule. SW did not have the 6th most difficult schedule, as an example.

Anonymous said...

Eric mom very good post!

Anonymous said...

Really...Erics Mom?

Anonymous said...

White Bear 1 Stillwater 0

Anonymous said...

Mpls Southwest v Wayzata? Any score?

Anonymous said...

Wayata won in a shootout.

Anonymous said...

Either way the arrogant d-bags won, I mean lost...um, uh, I guess they both are! I'm suprised you could fit both coaches egos in the same stadium.

Anonymous said...

If AV coach did not nominate Rosenthal, the an AV player will nto will it. It will get mirred in a stats discussion and some random player from Anoka will win it.

Anonymous said...

The AV sweeper won it.

Anonymous said...

Woodbury is beating Cretin 3-0
Armstrong is beating South 2-0
AV is beating Burnsville 2-0

all late in the game

Anonymous said...

If AV's sweeper won that is flat out embarassing since he isn't one of the top 3 in talent on AV even. He is questionable for top 5 on AV even.

tomASS said...

849 - sounds like AV parents turning on each other? Pretty personal comment that holds a lot of bias.

Anonymous said...

Now don't stir the pot again Mr. TomASS.

Anonymous said...

Wayzata beat Mpls SW?

Anonymous said...

Final
Robbinsdale Armstrong 4, Minneapolis South 0

Anonymous said...

Apple Valley 4; Burnsville 0

Anonymous said...

tomASS is still smarting from the beatdown that AV administered to Chaska (that is before they quit and walked off the field). Kind of like the Black Knight in Monty Python......"all right we'll call it a draw"....

Anonymous said...

no no...it's only a flesh wound.

Anonymous said...

Final
Wayzata 1, Minneapolis Southwest 0 F/SO

Okay where are the cheerleaders for Mpls SW. How can SW lost to not-so-good team?

Anonymous said...

the AV player's mothers were hamsters and their fathers smelled of elderberries...leave us Chaska parents alone or we will taunt you a second time....

Anonymous said...

Was not an AV parent but have a son at this age group I'm going by what I see of him from the summer season.

Anonymous said...

Eagan 3 Park 2 F/OT

AV vs. Eagan in final

Anonymous said...

8:36 PM - How do you know AV sweeper won it??

Anonymous said...

CP 2 vs Cenntenniel 0

Maple Grove 6 vs Osseo 5 (I think it was a shoot out that went I think three or four players into the bench)

Anonymous said...

swest and south both failed to score a goal. very poor results for both city schools, seems that they have more talent than that.

Anonymous said...

Centennial lost? wow.

Anonymous said...

southwest lost because they are NOT good. Look at their schedule? They have played NO ONE. Congrats to Wayzata.

I have seen a couple of SW Laker games this year and they can lay an egg once in a while. 1-0 v Edison for a final (I do not think Edison won more then a game or two this year)and and 0-0 at half time to a Washburn team that had not won a game and was starting 5 or 6 9th graders in the back as well as a game but undersized keeper that is a 10th grader. They pounded both teams later in the year but still they seemed very inconsistent in there ability to finish. Poor coaching or prep? Too bad if any city team was ready for a deep run since South made there it was SW. Sorry to see Edi end his season so soon.

Anonymous said...

Does anyone have the Maple Grove vs. Osseo score?

Anonymous said...

Maple Grove 6, Osseo 5

Anonymous said...

Maple Grove 2-1 Osseo
Shootout

Anonymous said...

1010...funny that you say SW is not good though they lost in the closest possible way, a 5-4 PK shootout. That makes Wayzata good? a coin flip? They have 15+ premier players, a lot of young ones. If you could look beyond your little world now and then you might see there is a lot of good players and more good h.s. teams than they used to be. You are NOT a good blogger. You have posted NOTHING useful.

Anonymous said...

Xman. Osseo lost. What da ya say.

Anonymous said...

SW is not good. period.

Anonymous said...

1032 what do you know about them? Which suburb are you from? 10+ players from the U15 Jedi and Wildcats who were tops in the league and finished 2nd in MWL and another 4-5 from Westside U17's that won the premier league? Again, you are clueless in your little tiny world.

Anonymous said...

Southwest made it in 2006 and had some success crushed Blaine and played well the next two games but that team was much better then this years team.

Anonymous said...

10:35 SCOREBOARD!
get a life.

Anonymous said...

1051 - 5-4 in pks is decisive? That makes one team good and the other bad? I'm not taking anything away from Wayzata, but get real. Again, you have nothing to offer, but vague blanket statements.

tomASS said...

928 - I don't think you realize the point you thought you were making but I still fart in your general direction

Anonymous said...

Once again it is next year for SW, it does not seem to matter how many young premier players come and go. It is always next year. I would think the SW parents that seem to always be hanging out here would take a break and come back next year,

Anonymous said...

SW good luck next year.
You're done. Go home and rest.
Wayzata played better.
SW is no good.

Anonymous said...

Armstrong will put Wayzata into their place and head to State.

Anonymous said...

ok Wayzata, enjoy your last shot at anything for a long time. No one plays at your club teams any more and the talent pool isn't looking good. Best of luck Friday.

Anonymous said...

Any good games to watch tomorrow night? X better get going.

Anonymous said...

now that just sounds like sour grapes boys

Anonymous said...

Most of the Wayzata High School team comes from PSA, MTA, Wings

The Wayzata Soccer Club has only a couple of boys teams over U2

Saw the MG/Osseo game. MG cannot score. They had multiple semi-opportunities to put things in play--definitely exposed Osseo's weekenesses. Osseo had some good play from Bah and a Sophomore (#4)who is quite tough on the dribble.

Players from both sides aired shots and PKs. Astounding to see so many misses in the first 5. After that, you could see people bewildered on both benches; who is up? Anybody want a shot? Oh, you might lose the game for us.

That said, it went to the 9th shooter to end the game--the MG goalie made the only save of the S.O. Crappy way to end a game, but you gotta choose, right? And MG played better through the OTs.

Hard to say if MG has figured out anything than how to beat their rival Osseo. C.P. has always been a tough game for them. I expect Champlin to win the section champ. 2-0.

So--is Champlin any good? I can't imagine they are on anyone's radar for state. They have one very clever player; can you mark him out and make it a boring game? I'd say he is their only chance of success and surprise at state. Of course, they need to beat the underdogs on Friday night first.

Anonymous said...

oops 12.06 should be U12

Anonymous said...

LOL "They have one very clever player;" good one! He so clever he has never learned how to play the game of team of soccer. He plays a great game of world cup.

Mister Soccer said...

Why pass the ball if your teammates stink and will kick it out of bounds anyways?

You see it all the time in fall soccer: clever players and stinky players.

Anonymous said...

Your right, dribbling through 11 other players is always so sucessful. And is also the reason Maple Grove will win, they actually pass the ball.

You are right again, we see it every fall or on some C2 and C3 teams that have a super studs. What I don't understand is why those "very clever" players don't get the fact that they HAVE to work with their teammates in order to be sucessful. I would suggest that they really are not clever at all.

I would also point out that Maple Grove seems to be able to year after year, pull it together for sectionals. Whereas Champlin with an abundance of talent can't seem to get beyond those individual player to win.

XMan Update on Monday 10/19 Games

2-out-of-5 is horrible!

Right:
Armstrong 4-0 South
Eagan 3-2 OT Park Cottage Grove

Wrong:
Champlin Park 2-0 Centennial
Maple Grove 2-1 OT/SO Osseo
White Bear Lake 1-0 Stillwater

I believe coaching has a lot to do with these upsets.

XMan Games to Watch - Tuesday 10/20

Bloomington Jefferson vs. Edina - 7:00 PM at Edina
The Hornets will have their hands full tonight.
I don't think they can contain the Jaguars attacks.
I have Jaguars 3-0 Hornets.

Sure Games (should not be any surprises here)
Lakeville North over Rochester Mayo
Lakeville South over Northfield
Eden Prairie over Prior Lake
Elk River over St. Cloud Tech
Fergus Falls over Moorhead

Anonymous said...

I keep hearing that Moorhead should win the game against Fergus Falls....

What happend to the Minneapolis Schools? Did anyone go to the games yesterday?

Anonymous said...

Which Mpls? South or SW?
Armstrong man-handled South.

Anonymous said...

Both.

Did you see the South game?

I left the SW game at half and it looked like SW might get one at some point in that first half. Southwest had 5 really good chances in the first half. The one chance that Wayzata had was off of a free kick from 40 out that hit the post. Wayzata also had a breakaway that the kid shot for 25 out and put it well wide. All those talented kids on South and Southwest and every year, they seem to fall short.

I didn't get a chance to see the 2nd half of the SW/Wayzata game or the Armstrong/South game.

Anonymous said...

Even if your teammates stink...they are still your teammates and last I saw, soccer was about having an 11 man team - not a one man team! So quit trying to do it all by yourself and play with your team -

Anonymous said...

Saw the Maple Grove vs. Osseo game. It was very intense. #1 is a great player on Maple Grove and had multiple chances to put the game away but could not. #8 Bah from Osseo is a fantastic player and deserves much credit. Maple Grove seems to love being the underdog. Keep It up!

Also, wish i could have made it to see the Wayzata game. I'll put my money on them beating armstrong in a very close game.

Anonymous said...

Who cares who wins Armstrong/Wayzata. Whichever team wins that game will be one and done in state.

Anonymous said...

Winner of AV/Eagan will win it all. AV is the obvious heavy favorite. Woodbury is the only other legitimate team. Bad year for high school soccer. Valley might walk through this thing by beating everybody by 2-3 goals.

Anonymous said...

What bad year for HS soccer. For years we have all heard how this was the year/age group with all the studs.

Anonymous said...

Let's see if AV can break Osseo goals record last year.

In Section: 13-3

In State: 11-3 (the most ever)
Final 4-1 (the largest spread ever)

Anonymous said...

Final 4-1 (the largest spread ever)

I think the most ever as well.

I think many of the best players in this age are either at Shattuck or aren't playing high school soccer or were Mr. Soccer last year.

KD

Just to list some of them.

Your all fools for thinking this age group isn't talented. They prove it every year in the summer and they are doing it again this fall.

Anonymous said...

Jefferson and Edina game should be good.

Anonymous said...

one person (2:51pm) makes a comment and the same SCV/VLY folks pounce to defend.......

Anonymous said...

Gee I thought it was always the same group of over involved parents making the comment about how this was the greatest age group ever from MN. LOL it certainly is a infamous group of parents, destruction of one club(Wings & Armstrong HS dad), DOC tampering w/team placement for childs benefit, Super Eagles and fraud charges.

In light of the comments about it being a "bad year for High School Soccer" I think the arguement could be made that it isn't the greatest group of players ever as much as the worse group of parents ever. I wonder how many of them can look back on their childs youth soccer career with a sense of pride rather than an sense of embarassment

Anonymous said...

4:32PM ANON: Who made you the judge of right and wrong. I wonder how much you get paid for writing this type of embarrasing statement. Parents are involved - it is a bad thing. Parents are not involved, its a bad thing. Kids play HS, its a bad thing, kids dont play HS, its a bad thing. Coachs volunteer at HS to keep cost down, its a bad thing, coachs don't volunteer, its a bad thing. How come you are so righteous to determine what parents and their kids think? Let parents be parents and kids be kids. Let's not be too quick to judge. I can see you from afar and I know you are just looking for people to write - so I did. whoa!

A BCS/March Madness-style State Tournament would look something like this:

1 Apple Valley v 8 Elk River
4 Eden Prairie v 5 White Bear

3 Eagan v 6 Jefferson
2 Woodbury v 7 Armstrong

Wouldn't that be nice.

AV over Eagan 3-0

Woodbury over WBL 1-0

Champlin Park over Maple Grove 2-1

Armstrong over Wayzata 2-0

Blaine over Duluth East 2-1

Elk River over Moorhead 2-0

#1 seed AV
#2 seed Wdby
#3 seed Jefferson
#4 seed Elk River

Anonymous said...

I would like to nominate the Rockford Rockets for the worst team of the year. 10 goals for, 148 against.

On a more serious note, it looks like there will be quite a few close Section final games. Teams seeing each other in the finals that have already played this year include:

EP v. Jefferson 1-1
AV v. Eagan 6-0
WDB v. WBL 2-1
CP v. MG 1-0
Arm v. Wayzata 1-0
Duluth v. Blaine 1-1
ER v. Moorhead 0-0

That leaves Lakeville North v. Northfield and although North is a higher seed Northfield just defeated the #1 seed South.

Should be an interesting few days of soccer!

Osseo Parent said...

Yep--should be a fun couple of nights. I love it when the fans start going rabid about their team this time of year. Predicting scores like 4-2 is crazy. AV might be capable, but many of these teams simply won't give up goals like that this time of year. The only reason Osseo blistered the state tourney last year was because the other teams weren'r ready for them. MG led them 1-0 until the last ten minutes in the section final last year; they had seen them, so they knew what they were up against. They weren't any better than the teams that got destroyed in the dome--just mentally ready.

You boys better get ready for AV this year--similar deal.

Anonymous said...

Osseo parent I think you are right on. MG, CP, PC all provided intensly competitive games to Osseo last year. I think Osseo had an overall more athletic team then those other teams, but all of those teams knew what they were in for and came ready for the game.

At the tournament, I think CR crumbled under the pressure of the dome and never came back. The rest of the teams just were not ready for Osseo intense fast physical game. I haven't seen AV play but from the banter on this blog, it doesn't sound like they play that type of game. It does sound like they have probably not as much athletitism (sp) but perhaps a lot more technically skilled players.

Eagan must be more physical if they want to beat AV.
I'll be watching this game.

Anonymous said...

I saw the AV vs Eagan game during the regular season, and the AV vs BV game Monday night. I thought BV gave AV much more trouble than Eagan did. I'm not sure why, but BV was definitely much more physical with AV than Eagan was.

Me XMan said...

Eagan gave too much respect last time. They must step up the physical game and disrupt AV game flow.

Anonymous said...

Five Lake Conf teams still playing out of the 16 teams left. Will they get three in the State Tourney again? Very likely.

Jaded Watcher said...

I'm not sure why people get so nutty about their conference. The Sections are laid out in a way so that this can happen. Just because a conference can send multiple teams doesn't mean they are the best.

If so, the Northwest Surburban is right there too. (Sections 5,7,8) Last two champs.

No surprise that the big surburban conferences do well...

Again, who cares?

Anonymous said...

I would agree that the sectional are definately set up for the suburban schools. I would like to see three class in HS Soccer. Private School, Class A schools from 2000 and smaller, Class AA 2000 and larger. This would give the schools outside of the metro area a better chance. The metro private schools dominate Class A.

tomASS said...

Burnsville does a nice job winning balls out of the air. Eagan not the same ability. Win the game in the air and you can also disrupt the AV game

Want to go to watch this game also - It says section final is at Farmington? Is that correct?

The Johnny Cake Ridge field usually isn't too bad

Anonymous said...

Section 3AA has always played their final on a turf field to prepare for State. They use to play the game at Park (I believe) but now that Farmington High School is a turf field and a neutral site, they will play there.

Anonymous said...

1:15, AV has student population below 2000 this year, that wouldn't work.

Anonymous said...

Below 2000? Are you nuts? I think most AA schools have approximately 2000--some have 1600, others have 2300. There are a few exceptions, but there are very few that are dramatically larger like EP or Anoka.

Anonymous said...

Sorry, 2000 was a subjective number, based on the number in my sons graduating classes (750& 698). Yes, they went to one of the mega schools. It would be nice to see something along this format that gives the small outstate schools as well as perhaps some of the smaller city schools opportunities to be competitive.

Mister Soccer said...

I would prefer one class.

There aren't two World Cups to provide for the small countries. As always, who cares about Class A, but I bet the top 5 Class A teams could make a little noise in Class AA.

AV beat Eagan 6-0 in the season and you want to see that in the State Final? Yeah, I'm sure Coach Virgin, with all his career wins, has made the necessary adjustments.

Anonymous said...

the game will be closer than 6-0, but I still think Valley win come out on top in this one

Anonymous said...

960 is the A v AA cutoff. It includes charter and specialty school enrollment in the district as well (which is where they can play their sport.)

Anonymous said...

Top 5 A teams would not make noise in AA.

960 is not correct for the cut off. It is something like 1350, but the enrollment aggregation is correct.

You heard it here first:

AV 1 EAG 2

take it to the bank.

School Enrollments off MSHSL web site

#20 Apple Valley 2180 vs #15 Eagan 2351

#10 Woodbury 2475 vs #9 WBL 2476

#2 Wayzata 3043 vs #23 Armstrong2087

#1 Eden Prairie 3099 vs #36 Bloomington Jefferson 1676

#3 Champlin Park 3001 vs #12 Maple Grove 2444

#43 Elk River 1606 vs #46 Moorhead 1527

#7 Blaine 2630 vs #63 Duluth East 1222

#38 Lakeville North 1674 vs #62 Northfield 1223

School Size matters and it does not matter. It sure helps to have a lot of student-athletes to pick from.

Anonymous said...

EP and Blaine both have 1400 more students then Jefferson and Duluth East. WOW!!!! I think it makes a difference.

Anonymous said...

Combine Jefferson and Kennedy and they would have a few more students then EP.

Combine East, Central and Denfeld and they would be like EP. A little larger then Blaine.

How would Bloomington HS and Duluth HS do in sport? Probably about like EP. Funny how Mike Grant gets so much credit at EP in football. Football truly is a numbers game. Soccer not as much

Jajed Watcher said...

I would like a single class system as well. That's what I played in. I played at a private school with a famous coach. We played and beat big schools regularly--including that certain big school with another famous coach. Just have one champion. Everyone is not a winner.

Anonymous said...

I would vote for 3 classes: AAA, AA, A.

Anonymous said...

Per the MSHSL website:
For boys and girls soccer the 64 largest schools by enrollment are AA; remainder are A.
The classification method varies by sport.

Anonymous said...

we should just have once classification like the colleges....oh wait, they have D1, D2, D3, and NAIA.
nevermind.

Anonymous said...

The most ridiculus is american-football. 6 classes including 9-man. What a joke.

Anonymous said...

The more winners the better right?
Spread out the winnings per BO.

Anonymous said...

Actually, the main reason for different classifications is to encourage participation and equal competition. The big schools only want to play against the big schools just as much as the medium or smaller schools want to play against similar sized schools.

I get and in many ways are frustrated with today's "give a medal to everyone mentality", but IMO, school classifications doesn't fall into that same category.

Anonymous said...

Hahaha if Eagan beats Apple Valley I will go crazy.. But you will receive full credit if it does happen.

Anonymous said...

Good luck to all 16 teams and players that are still alive in the Section final games! I look forward to watching some great high school soccer over the next two nights!

Anonymous said...

nothing wrong with the 2 class system. There are 4 divisions in the summer league play and teams can opt out of that and do just MWL if they think it will give them better competition. And that's for very specific age groups i.e. 15's, 16's etc. H.S. is 14-20 year olds all lumped together.

Anonymous said...

qrf info can be found here:

it's interesting...

Anonymous said...

QRF is strength of schedule and quality of wins....that is why you see so many lake teams

Let the Section madness begin....

Half time score - Apple Valley 1, Eagan 0

Anonymous said...

Any half time score for Woodbury/WBL boys?

Anonymous said...

Final - Apple Valley 4; Eagan 0

Anonymous said...

Woodbury 1 WBL 0. Woobury scored with 2 minutes remaining in the second over time.

Anonymous said...

Northfield 2
Lakeville North 0

Anonymous said...

Northfield 2
Lakeville North 1 Final

Lakeville North outplayed Northfield but couldn't capitalize on their opportunities. Northfield played very direct, boot ball and scored when they had the chance.

Anonymous said...

To quote the great Dan Dierdorf, "The team with the most goals...will win the game..."

Screw style. Win the game.

Especially tomorrow night. Freezing rain? Snow? Don't do something stupid boys.

Anonymous said...

Lakeville North lost? NOOOO!
Northfield in State? Wow.

ANy updates on Jefferson vs EP game?

Anonymous said...

I was a the Eagan/AV game....Eagan played them tough for thr first 35 minutes, and then AV scored with 3 minutes left in the first half. AV scored 6 minutes into the second half on a questionable goal that was ruled to barely go over the line. AV controlled the play from there. AV is an outstanding team. Eagan nice year.

Anonymous said...

Jefferson v EP....score anybody

Me XMan said...

I have two strong points that broke Eagan's game:

On defense: I guess Eagan didn't take my advice to play more physical to break up the flow. Eagan should double or even triple the fouls than what they have tonight.

On attacking: Eagan midfield forced the ball up too fast and given up possession too soon. They kept jamming the ball up front w/o much support from midfield. AV just booted right back to them.

I have two strong points why AV finally broke away:

On attacking: AV kept composure at midfield and dominate there to setup the plays with forwards. Basically the attacks are composed with midfielders and forwards which is very good for HS level.

On defense: AV is strong in the air and one-on-one. Many unnecessary booting but I guess they want the ball up front sooner. This could hurt them with good possession team.

Overall the possession is 65%-35% AV with plenty of scoring chances and good finishing. AV won it fair and square.

The only way to beat AV is in spot kicks.

Comparing AV this year vs last year, this year is much better at possession and more patient with the ball.

Valley has so much more talent than anybody else it's unreal

Can someone fill me in on Northfield?

They weren't in my radar. Beaten up Century, Lakeville South and now North. That's a great feat for an unknown team. Well at least to me.

Blaine 1-0 Duluth East

Congrats to Bengals. The last time they were in State was 2006.

St. Louis Park 2, Breck 0

The Orioles going back to State in Class A. Last year took 2nd place in Class AA behind Osseo.

Champlin Park / Maple Grove score anyone?

They play Friday night.

Just as I had thought about EP coaching. Jefferson coaching is way better and that's probably the main reason they won.

AA Section Finals Update

Section 1AA Final - Lakeville North 1-2 Northfield
Section 2AA Final - Eden Prairie 0-2 Jefferson
Section 3AA Final - Apple Valley 4-0 Eagan
Section 4AA Final - Woodbury 1-0 OT White Bear Lake
Section 7AA Final - Blaine 1-0 Duluth East

Not a good night for Eden Prairie and White Bear Lake. Both Boys and Girls lost in section finals.

A good night for Woodbury. Both Boys and Girls are going to State.

"I don't understand why everyone thinks Rosenthal will get MR. SOCCER, he is the lead scorer but what has he done to get it, score goals? that is nothing. I think either one of there senior D lines will get it or simply someone else. There are other good players out there playing as well or even better than him, but i guess we will have to see."

Anonymous said...

what has he done to deserve getting the award is what i meant.

Anonymous said...

Rosenthal has good academic scores and made the academic team.

Anonymous said...

So...from how the state tournament is shaping up does anyone see a team that may be able to upset the AV squad. Needless to say, AV is the complete favorite, but will they slip up like last year?

Anonymous said...

AV has won all 21 of their games, 17 of which were shutouts. They've allowed only 5 goals all season - and only one team score more than 1 goal against them (so far). They are certainly a formidable obstacle for any other team hoping to win state!

Anonymous said...

Very true. If a team really studies AV and finds the littlest holes in their game, I think AV can be challenged by a Woodbury, a Jefferson, an Armstrong.

Anonymous said...

Northfield Wins? Weren't they Class A until a year ago? They had some success in Class A a few years back, but in the last few years they lost out to Mkt West in section 2A, then moved to 1A and Rochester Lourdes beat them. Even if they don't make noise at State, lets give a little respect to some non metro and class A teams. AV 1 - Owatonna 0 if you recall

Anonymous said...

What is the academic team?

Anonymous said...

Quote me Woodbury will win state

The Sweeper from AV is Mr Soccer. I GUARANTEE IT

QUIT WASTING TIME WITH THIS DISCUSSION.

11:40 Are you the same guy that predicted Eagan 2, AV 1???

Anonymous said...

XMan, also a good night for the Obarski's Tom scores two goals for AV in their section final win and Mark leads Eagan girls back to state

If EP is ever serious on making State, they need to hire a professional coach. They start looking like Champlin team like XMan describes it the woulda-coulda-shoulda team.

Anonymous said...

Sooner or later the skill will be so good that the coach will not matter. It finally happened to the EP hockey team last year when they won state. Fans said the hockey coach should have be gone 10 years ago.

Anonymous said...

From X-mans recap the AV team is well-coached, disciplined team that has a couple goals: clear any defensive balls -get them forward- and build from the midfield unless you do not have the bodies then you play it direct. Safe strategy for a talented team. Physicality -denying them the ball- is the key.

Anonymous said...

Not the coachs fault at EP. Quit making excuses and take personal responsibility for your lack of results.

Anonymous said...

8:08 - Champlin has a professional coach - that has not helped them the last couple of years. Coaches and players need to respect and work hard for each other and the PARENTS need to stay out of it!

Anonymous said...

Seeding on Sunday morning
1. Apple Valley 21-0-0
2. Woodbury 15-0-3
3. Jefferson 12-4-4

Those are slam dunks

If Elk River wins I think they go in at #4

Non Seeded teams
Blaine 13-7-1
Northfield 13-4-3
Champlin Park 10-7 or Maple Grove 7-9-2
Moorhead 12-4-2 or Elk River 11-4-3
Wayzata 9-6-4 or Armstrong 10-7-3

Discussion??

Anonymous said...

Tough discussion to have - Remaining teams have no record of playing each other -

If you go just by their records, Blaine, Northfield and Moorhead (if they win) have earned that right to be in the 3rd or 4th spot -

Anonymous said...

Has the QRF Ranking (for what it is worth) been adjusted for the section wins these teams have all earned?

Mister Soccer said...

I think Jefferson has a scrawny freshman that starts yet they make it to state for something like the 5th time in 9 years. That's pretty good for a smaller AA school in a tough section. I think they always win their state quarterfinal game too.

What's in their water?

Oh yeah. It's a coach that everybody rips on. He ain't no coach. He's just an egomaniac who is handed talent of upperclassmen from Bloomington's thriving club program.

Anonymous said...

Jefferson is not in a good section. They played an EP team that was the worst EP squad I've seen in years. If they were in Section 3 (AV, EAGAN's section)they wouldn't even make it out of the semifinals. I don't think they've beaten either AV or Eagan for like 5+ years. Burnsville and EV finished (also in Section 3) higher in the conference than Jeferson. And Park the #3 seed was a solid squad. Let me take that back, they wouldn't make it out of the quarters of 3!

Anonymous said...

Nobody will come within 3 goals of AV. They have so much talent and work very hard.

Anonymous said...

Moorhead has won their last 9 games - that's pretty impressive - against what talent not sure - tied Elk River and lost to Maple Grove early on -

Anonymous said...

9:11 am - So you wouldn't give Jefferson the #3 spot?

Anonymous said...

Fun 1st round games in State.

Apple Valley vs. Armstrong
Woodbury vs. Blaine
Jefferson vs. Northfield
Elk River vs. Champlin Park

Put some scores out there.....

9:11,
Rather than that desperate rant, why don't you just say the Lake Conference is better than the State Tournament?

If Jefferson is 4 for 4 on making it to the dome when they go to State, that shows their section winner is better than 4 other section winners.

Section 3 is tops this year, but Section 2 has been tops for years with EP, Jefferson, Edina and MTonka. Pull your head out and take a bigger look.

By the way, the regular season doesn't matter. Everyone makes the playoffs and home field is meaningless.

Me XMan said...

I believe this is Gavin 2nd year at Champlin Park HS. Given him time, he will mold players into his plans.

Some parents and players can't adjust so it's best to leave them out.

Gavin was at Mounds View before moving to CP. He's a good coach.

Me XMan said...

You're right on. A physical and good possession team will give AV problems. AV has good defenders. Opponents need to control the midfield and make stab-n-recover runs with through ball at defense.

DS only cares about his team getting better and playing well at the end of the year. He has coached Jefferson 8 of the last 10 years making it to state 5 times. Not too bad. If you want to talk records of the past Jefferson is 3-0 in the section final vs AV. Who cares about the conf stuff. 2-0 in the Section final vs EP. DS teams are 5-0 in Section finals and 4-0 in State Quarters.

Me XMan said...

Stolien is a good person and a coach IMO. His team may not have lot of talent but they're disciplined. He's trained them well.

Me XMan said...

I see this State seeding:

1. Apple Valley
2. Woodbury
3. Elk River (if they win tonight)
4. Jefferson

It doesn't matter how you seed as long as you're top 4. The draw for last 4 teams into top 4. All games are at neutral site and then dome. No home advantage here.

Anonymous said...

No way you can seed Bloomington lower than Elk River.

How much weight do you give to teams that come into the section/state tournament winning games?

Me XMan said...

It doesn't matter the ranking in top 4 seeding. You can have your Jefferson #1 as you like. Check my post again.

Anonymous said...

Yeah you can...Bloomington finished 7th in the Lake Conference.

Anonymous said...

Jefferson sucks the banana

Anonymous said...

Jefferson goes in ahead of Elk River for sure. Elk River and Jefferson very similar records. Jefferson won a section that is so much stronger. Jefferson beat EP 2-0 and Elk River tied EP.

Me XMan said...

I'll take back my comment on it's not important in the seeding of top 4. It's important for the bracket. So it does matter for second round if you don't want to meet AV.

Anonymous said...

Osseo got demoted to #4 from #2 in last year bracket. funny...
http://www.mshsl.org/mshsl/showbrackets.asp?tournid=2490&bracket=4485

Anonymous said...

Me Xman - Check your post again. It does matter where you net out in the top 4. By all accounts most everyone thinks Apple Valley is the top team. Would you rather play Woodbury or Apple Valley in the second round?

Here's what I'd be looking at if I had to submit rankings this year.

Elk River is 2-2-2 in the last 6 games of their season (wins against Park Center and St. Cloud Tech, losses against Osseo and Anoka and ties against Eden Prarie and Park)

Bloomington is 4-2 in their last 6 games (wins against Eden Prairie and Edina and one of their losses came against Apple Valley)

Looking at both Armstrong and Wayzata's last 10 games, I'd be worried if I had to play either one of those teams in the first round of State.

Anonymous said...

10:37AM - Not following

How was St. Louis Park able to go single A this year?

Anonymous said...

Hey...

Noticed Hermantown made it into the State Tournament for Single A.

Looking forward to seeing if they can do some damage against the smaller (height and size) single A teams. I'm thinking they might make it to the semi's or possibly the finals.

Anonymous said...

I would much rather play Woodbury than AV.....again AV is 3-4 goals better than everybody.
