Flying all over country the past 5 years to visit colleges seems a bit overkill for the 99% of the rest of us. Go fly a kite 2:25 PM.

Anonymous said...

3:11 - seriously, why do you care what 9:52 or 2:25 do? Not your money, not your time, not your effort, not your child?

Anonymous said...

3:31 PM - why do you care what I say about what 9:52 or 2:25 do?

Anonymous said...

3hut up 3:31

Anonymous said...

i almost feel guilty, but it's way too easy to rile some of you up and get a reaction. sorry, my bad.

Anonymous said...

I feel a movement coming.

OCCUPY MTA!

Anonymous said...

Do you know how many plane tickets you could purchase with your MTA "tuition" to visit schools and interview face-to-face with admissions reps?

How many tutoring hours you could purchase?

These investments will actually pay off for most people. (My kid aspires to be more than just a college soccer player or MTA coach.)

Anonymous said...

Here come the "your kid probably sucks as a player" comments...

Anonymous said...

Occupy MTA, funny. Isn't that what you do anyway when you play an MTA team? Just sit around and complain about everything and not do anything concrete about it!

Anonymous said...

I'm an MTA parent, but I do agree that money should be spent towards college first. If you have the money to pay MTA, fine. But college first.

Anonymous said...

Have you looked at the total costs for St. Croix or REV? They're way up there in the MTA range.

Anonymous said...

952, crappy school? According to who? You?

I'll make sure I check with you before my daughter makes a decision to make sure it's not a crappy school. Thanks for saving her from herself!

Anonymous said...

No, just trying to save her from you.

Anonymous said...

No school is crappy when compared to no school.

Anonymous said...

Checking Top Drawer and ESPN Rise these are the schools that the 2012 class is committed to (not a good one in the bunch I bet...

Akron
Crieghton
Dayton
Illinois
Louisville
Memphis
Minnesota
North Dakota State
South Dakota
Wisconsin
Wisconsin - Green Bay
Wisconsin Milwaukee

Sorry to through out facts, I know that will confuse some on this blog.

Anonymous said...

Actually, you throw out facts, but maybe they didn't teach spelling at your (crappy) school.

Interesting on ESPN.com: Minnesota's class of 2012 has 6 -- 6 -- Division 1 girls' soccer players. 6. Three from Eden Prairie SC, one from Eagan SC, one from Dakota Rev and one from MTA.

Anonymous said...

6.

Anonymous said...

Actually there are a few more D1 girls on topdrawer (7 total from MTA?), but pretty weak given the $thousands invested by hundreds of families every year.

Keep selling the dream, MTA.

Anonymous said...

If you go out to https://sites.google.com/site/soccerrecruits/

there are 21 girls from 7 different clubs that have given verbals.

12 from MTA
4 from EP (one has moved to MTA)
1 each from REV, Eagan, Shattuck, St. Croix and TC Fire

Anonymous said...

REV had atleast three kids last year that accepted D1 offers and a few more that turned some down because the school was not what they where looking for.

Anonymous said...

All those totals are far from complete. We will know for sure AFTER signing day in February.

Anonymous said...

So I'm looking at that list. I thought MTA was going to open up opportunities to go to colleges across the country when they joined ECNL. I do not see a school on that list that would not have been an option without ECNL.

They are all mostly in the midwest. Where are all this big time schools on the coasts? Another bill of goods from the fine people at MTA.

Anonymous said...

Can we even count Shattuck as a Minnesota kid?

Anonymous said...

Yes, she's from Prior Lake.

Anonymous said...

My daughter plays MTA (U16) because she likes to train and play with girls that are serious about soccer. At her old club, girls would barely show up for winter training or if anything better came along they skipped soccer. So she moved to MTA. But, she has always stated that she doesn't want to play soccer in college. We're not at MTA for a remote chance for a future college scholarship, we're at MTA because it's better soccer. It is more expensive than other clubs, but if we can afford it, why not. Playing soccer isn't all about playing for a scholarship.

Anonymous said...

Yeah, but that's MTAs big sell line. We will get you in front of coaches from the best colleges in the country.

If you look at the list that 1145b posted, it looks like someone bought ocean front land in Nebraska.

Where are the best colleges, or top teams? Not one of those schools or teams can be called a top school or a top team.

Anonymous said...

Do you follow college soccer? There are several good teams on that list...

Dayton - Record 19-3-0, RPI 21, Atlantic 10 Champions, Lost first round of NCAA tournament
Illinois - Record 16-4-2, RPI 20, Big Ten Champions, Beat defending champ Notre Dame in first round of NCAA tournament
Louisville - record 12-6-3, RPI 38, Big East runner-up, Won in first round of NCAA tournament
Memphis - Record 21-0-1, RPI 5, Conference USA champion, Won in first round of NCAA
Wisconsin - Milwaukee - Record 18-2-0, Horizon League champion, Won first round of NCAA tournament

So, four of those five teams won their first round game, one beating the defending champ (Illinois) and one with a 7-0 blowout (Memphis). The only team to lose (Dayton) lost to a team on that list (Louisville). At least one team will be in the sweet 16 because Memphis and Louisville face each other in round 2.

Anonymous said...

Milwaukee RPI is 19.

Anonymous said...

MTA isn't any more expensive than the top girls teams at SCV or REV or what the girls who played on the Woodbury Inferno paid.

Anonymous said...

7:49
So when Minnesota made the NCAA tournament why did you say they were a poor team?

Anonymous said...

How do u know? Show us the fee schedule for all these teams.

Anonymous said...

If all these schools are "bad and crappy," someone show us the so called "good" list. I would be curious to see what schools some of you consider the "top" schools.

Anonymous said...

The fees are posted on the website. Of course, there's always the hidden fees with all clubs (additional tournaments or winter play, coaches travel, etc).

Anonymous said...

SCV/MTA vet here. MTA is way more.

Anonymous said...

Inferno was $5000 with everything included (including travel) .

Anonymous said...

And with Inferno every penny was tracked. The financials were very transparent and well planned out.

Anonymous said...

1:07,
And what isn't with MTA? Please be specific.

Anonymous said...

Other clubs in the nation, what are their fees? Show us the fees for MTA?

Anonymous said...

11:04 AM -- Yeah right. Paste the links here for MTA, REV and SCV and let's compare.

Anonymous said...

1:41- No idea, my kids don't play there.

Anonymous said...

MTA is $2200.00 a year for U14 and U15.

Anonymous said...

sure, if you ride a bike to tournaments, stay in a tent and eat your own meals that you grew yourself.

Anonymous said...

Who cares what people pay! It's their choice.

Anonymous said...

You can set your watch to this discussion as it annually occurs right after the high school season is over.

Most club "basic fees" are relatively comparable (registrations, coach fees, training costs, etc...)
Where the differences come in are:
*how many weekly training sessions are there?
*is there some form of mandated fitness training costs that need to be added in?
*how many tournaments as each one has entry costs
*how many tournaments require travel which bumps up the cost as the coaches travel/food costs are usually split up amongst the player families
*how are the travel costs handled? Does the team mandate 4 to a room and is that built into the monthly fees, a la carte, or each player/family fends for their own
*extra costs for Regionals
What most people find at the end of the day is that for the most part you get what you pay for. More training and more travel = more expensive. It's up to the individual family to determine what is the right fit.

Anonymous said...

10:44,

Did I miss something? I didn't see Minnesota in the tournament.

Anonymous said...

6:56
When MN was in the tourney people were still on here calling them crappy. They certainly did as well or better than Dayton and some of the others, The one year they lost in a good game against Notre Dame. The idiots on here still said they were so horrible. So my point is you can't say these teams are so much better that have advanced the same as Mn and then say MN sucks.

Anonymous said...

I didn't see anyone say Minnesota sucks. I think the point above was that the schools on that list are not crappy schools. Yes, the Gophers had a good run last year. Unfortunately they had a tough year this year. That's the beautiful thing about sports. From year-to-year, things change. If they didn't it would be boring.

Anonymous said...

Case in point...

Notre Dame, last year's champion and frequent College Cup participant, lost in the first round this year. Does that make them a crappy team? No. It means Illinois was the better team that day. The teams mentioned are mostly in the top 20 this year. I think that makes them quality teams.

I think the point is, Minnesota girls are getting noticed and are able to get into good schools with good programs.

I personally don't care which club these girls come from. It's exciting to see Minnesota girls go and represent our state in these programs.

Let's face it, there is only one DI program in the state. Not all of the state's top players can play for the Gophers. A majority have to leave the state if they want to follow their dream of continuing to play at the highest level after high school.

For someone to come on here and say, those are all crappy teams and only in the Midwest is ignorant. I don't believe anyone should criticize anyone's college choice. Only that player, and her parents and coach, know the process she went through to get where she is. All of these young women have worked hard to follow their dream and they should be commended for reaching their goal.

Also, I believe it is wrong for someone to criticize someone who chooses to play DII or DIII. Again, no one outside of that girl and her family knows what went into that decision.

I can't wait for signing day. I look forward to seeing where these girls end up.

Full disclosure. My daughter is going to one of the schools on that list next year. She will attend one of the schools still alive in the tournament. What does that mean for her? Absolutely nothing until she is on that team. But it has been her dream since she was 4-years old and first stepped on a soccer field. Many of her friends and club teammates have chosen to keep playing at all levels (DI, DII and DIII). some have even decided they've had enough and just want to step away from the game. No one should criticize or denigrate their decisions or the schools they choose.

My daughter has played with and against all of these girls her whole life. She admires many of the players in the class of 2012 and she considers herself lucky to be a part of this group of girls. I have stood on the sideline and watched these kids compete and grow and develop in the process. I've gotten to know many of their parents. Each girl who decides to keep playing, no matter where it is, deserves what she has worked for. If you want to criticize and make fun of their choices go ahead, but know that it doesn't matter to most of us. Nothing anyone can say will minimize the effort these girls have put forth for years and years. And nothing anyone can say will make me lose one bit of respect any of these kids.

Anonymous said...

11/17/11 3:54 PM - $2200 is just the club fees. Compare this price to other clubs around the nation and you will find it is comparable.

But the main question is - does MTA give the same quality training like the other clubs around the nation do?

Anonymous said...

"it has been her dream since she was 4-years old and first stepped on a soccer field" -- That's funny,a 4 year old saying that she wants to play D1 soccer when she grows up. Did she tell you the college too????

Anonymous said...

Maybe a 4 year old didn't say where she wanted to play college, but I could see a 4 year old saying "when they get big, they want to play soccer all the time." My 5 year old (now 16) said that she wanted to play soccer in the Olympics when she was older. I'm 100% sure she won't be playing in the Olympics, but she still expressed her dream.
I agree with 10:08, who cares what people do or not do for college, club or high school. It's their choice and you don't know the story behind it.

Anonymous said...

What's that noise?

Anonymous said...

Sounds like a helicopter.

Anonymous said...

no. Sounds like a parent.

Anonymous said...

No. A helicopter parent!

To act as a parent.

I feel sorry for the parents that would give a crap what their kid does or doesn't. But, they must care a little bit since they are on this blog and this blog is about youth soccer. What is that I hear? It's your helicopter hovering, but you refuse to think that it is!

Anonymous said...

OK, what is a helicopter parent?

Also, we see the price is $2200 to play MTA for 1 year, not including travel. What are the other clubs? Please, do share!

Anonymous said...

1:23 PM -- what are you talking about???

Anonymous said...

I think 1:23pm is talking about being a parent. I guess you have a hard time understanding?

Anonymous said...

Here is exectly what my then 4-year-old daughter said. I want to be like [my cousin]. Her cousin was a freshman in college when she played her first year of rec ball.

So it has been her dream to play in college since she was 4.

Anonymous said...

2:07 PM -- I guess defining parent was the giveaway, right??!!
And what was his/her/your point?

Anonymous said...

Why do people call some parents "Helicopter parents?" Parents that hover over every aspect of a child's life is not good. But caring and helping your child navigate through their teen years is not wrong. Kids do need to make some mistakes on their own. It's a completely different world than when were kids (texting, chatting, Facebook, etc).

Anonymous said...

I think they were trying to make the point that a parent can be caring and nurturing (by definition) and not be called a helicopter parent you loser. You must be sad human being.

4:33pm. Wow, you're mature. What a waste of a person.

Anonymous said...

Looks like it's time to shut this thread down. All some people can do is attack people personally. I guess when you run out of facts and logical points, all you can do is make fun of people's parenting skills, typos, maturity level and threaten them with violence. Disgusting.

Anonymous said...

Cry babies!

Anonymous said...

Wow - and I guess that is how it ends! See you all when state cup starts!

Anonymous said...

You don't have to wait for State Cup to start. People will be on here right after Christmas talking smack about this year's tournament.

Anonymous said...

11/22/11 8:39 PM - LMAO!!!! SO true!

Anonymous said...

Let's not wait until after Christmas. My team/club is better than yours, so we're going to win!

Anonymous said...

Who needs MTA when you have North Shore. Who are these commits for the Gophers?

Anonymous said...

Never heard of North Shore United. Interesting that Minnesota is going outside the state and into Wisconsin for their 2013 recruits (Hudson, Germantown and Cedarburg). Have some top notch players here in Minnesota and I believe only one has committed from here (Lakeville North) so far.

Anonymous said...

It's a perception thing. A kid could play anywhere and get noticed by the U, so why play for MTA? They'd rather get their kids signed to crappy faraway schools...it makes MTA appear more worth the cost. At least that's what the lemmings think.

Anonymous said...

Crickets....crickets....

Anonymous said...

The 2013 class is not deep in terms of "top notch" talent. The other 2 "top notch" players are leaving the state and going to Santa Clara and Wisconsin. That class has above average players and good players who will sign with good to decent D1 schools but they're just not good enough to compete in the Big 10

Anonymous said...

5:26 - Why play for MTA? 1 of many reasons is because only 1-3 Minnesota kids will play for the U each year and if a player wants to play D1, playing for MTA gives them higher exposure to D1 college coaches than playing for another club. Look at the number of kids who sign D1 letters of intent each year from Minnesota...MTA signs double to triple the amount of kids than other Minnesota club's.

True, you don't have to play for MTA to play D1 soccer but it helps as you receive a vast amount more exposure.

Anonymous said...

1:17 I mostly agree, but at every age group, I think there is a club with a team that is able to groom a number of D1 players. Of course, there was Woodbury with the Inferno, Eden Prairie with last year's U18 team, St. Croix with U17s, and perhaps the Rev with the current U16s. The reason is a quality coach who can recruit players and get exposure by traveling to a number of national and regional events. The cost of these programs is equal to MTA costs. The advantage moving forward is ECNL, and top level coaches will always be at these events.

Anonymous said...

Actually, NDSU signs more Minnesota girls than the U of M. You see the NDSU coaches at a lot of events around town.

Just watch on signing day and see how many players sign with with the Bison.

Anonymous said...

And I'm sure you'll point out the NDSU signings along with your daughter, who was probably passed up by the U of M or another Big 10 School.

Anonymous said...

NDSU does have a number of MN recruits...nice players who work hard. I have heard more than once that U of M has a clear deal breaker - JR, Assistant Coach. Extremely arrogant and...well, let's leave it at that. A very dedicated fan of soccer, but does not know how to interact with recruits or parents.

Anonymous said...

Spot on 7:59

Anonymous said...

NDSU is a great school in a great community. Have you seen the Fargo Dome, excellent facility! I'm hoping my daughter will show an interest in NDSU when it's time to start looking at colleges.

Anonymous said...

Congratulations to LM for committing to NDSU!

Anonymous said...

That's great - she will join NF from Tartan, DG from Centennial, TV from Blaine, etc. Great choice!

Anonymous said...

And GA from North St. Paul

Anonymous said...

NDSU is going to have a nice team with all those Minnesota players. Maybe MDW could learn some things from their coaching staff. Better yet, maybe the U should change coaching staffs and bring in someone who is going to be seen around the community and be committed to keeping the state's top players. Funny, that staff is in Fargo.

Anonymous said...

304 - Tartan? There is no way Tartan has any DI players. They are a horrible team (in a horrible city I might add).

Anonymous said...

6:40am. You have to remember that players are recruited from club and not their high school. So you can play for the worst high school team in the state (or not play HS at all) and still get recruited from your club team.

Anonymous said...

12/5/11 6:40 AM - WOW, LOL!

Anonymous said...

640, first of all, there are two DI players coming out of Tartan this year - a defender and a midfielder. Second, they are only two of (not sure of the roster size) 20+ girls on that team. Third, horrible? They may not be a top tier team, but they went .500, not bad for a horrible team in a horrible city.

That's why coaches recruit from club teams, because they are able to compare apples to apples.

Anonymous said...

I didn't realize that club soccer raised fruit? Club soccer or HS soccer, if the kid is good enough to get noticed they will!

If you want more exposure then travel with your club team. If your club team stays regionally, well then most of the colleges will be in the region. Those teams that take the occasional long distance trip, take it for what it is...a nice trip with your child and teammates. College recruiters are not going to jump up and down and recruit a kid because of one tournament or one game they happened to see. The reason the handful of kids that go outside the region is because they are attending multiple out of the area tourn (MTA and ENCL).
Parents be careful what you wish for...your not going to be able to see all your kids games when they sign up to play in CA.

Anonymous said...

2:03 - I concur with your last statement, but then again, it is not about me (the parent). It is about your child having an opportunity to live in another state, play with a high level team, and be coached by the best in the business. Besides, with GameTracker and other internet based sites, most games are available to watch.

Anonymous said...

lol, how many local kids annually ever go more than a car ride away to play college soccer...

LukeSkyTalker said...

NDSU is on the up and up. Please dont sleep on this program. They should of beat the U in the exhibition game and lost in PK's in their conference final. They are getting new facilities that will be used as a recruiting tool. Don't be shocked if these players play with a chip on their shoulder because the U passed on them.

Anonymous said...

203, Good points, but...
actually coaches do jump up and down and recruit a kid because of one tournament or one game they happen to see. I know of several kids who had opportunities after coaches saw only part of a game. In my daughter's case, she invited a coach to watch her in a tournament and he sent an email to her immediately following her first game in that event. I mean immediately, it actually arrived before the game was over.

Two weeks later we were on campus and she had an offer. So, it happens.

Anonymous said...

3;16...congrats. Although i have to beleive the offer was made after numerous sightings. The first probably got their attention, but I find it impossible to beleive a player would get an offer after ten minutes of play.

Anonymous said...

BELIEVE!

Anonymous said...

Hey 340, 316 here, I think it was more than 10 minutes, but it was only one game. All I'm saying is, if a player gets in front of a the right coach at the right time, you never know what will happen.

A family friend has a daughter who had a similar experience (she's since graduated college). she was a keeper and a coach saw her play once and gave her an offer. She went on to have a great college experience.

I guess the important thing is, for players to look at the list of coaches attending an event and reach out to the schools she's interested in. Stranger things have happened.

Anonymous said...

213, why does it matter how far they go? Let's look at "a car ride away." Several Big Ten and Big 12 schools are "a car ride away." So is that a bad thing? If you look at the list above (see 11/16/11 11:45 AM) almost all of those teams are in driving distance (depending on your definition of driving distance.

So, what's your point? Do you really think we would be seeing Minnesota girls go to places like Akron, Dayton, Illinois, Louisville or Memphis if they weren't on a team that travels?

Anonymous said...

9:25...(3:40 here)thanks for the clarification...currently no kids at the recruiting age, i was told it takes a few times to get noticed on a serious basis? good to know!

Anonymous said...

MTA's biggest ripoff ever: SPAC training at $65 per 1 hour session and MINIMUM OF 15 people per session. That guy is making close to $1000/hr! On top of the giant class size for the cost, you are getting trained by a football coach which is much different than training movements for soccer. But I am sure a few suckers will enroll.

Anonymous said...

I think it's a typo on the MTA website. It's supposed to be 10 one hour sessions for $65.

Anonymous said...

I'm in it, it's $65 for 10 session. That's $6.50 per training session. Your large coffee at Starbucks costs more, now that's a rip-off.

Anonymous said...

12/6/11 3:12 PM - LMAO! Nice one! LOL!

Anonymous said...

12/6/11 12:33 PM I guess you believe that the facility is free, and the machines are free too.

Don't worry about enrolling your DD, if she gets your intelligence she won't be attending a college. they require common sense and you have to pass tests of intelligence.
