Many may have already read or heard about the demise of the MN Thunder and PDL Rochester Thunder. Unpaid bills, released players, no communication from owner Dean Johnson, would lead most to believe the MN Thunder no longer exist. Also, with the USL recently being sold to a ownership group with no team, a fraction of the former USL called the TOA (Team Owners Association) which represents angry team ownership for 6 or 7 USL/former USL teams, has been working on putting together a new league for a 2010 schedule.
For more details check out Inside MN Soccer, where Brian Quarstad has done an excellent job following the break story lines. See http://www.insidemnsoccer.com for more details.
What does all of this mean to top level soccer in Minnesota? What will all the former Thunder fans do May-August of 2010?

So, 9:17, what you are asking for is an Elite Club to start up to field a girls and boys U15 team? With no other teams, so that no other area clubs get upset and feel threatened by them?
How do you suggest that such a Club stay in business? It still takes money, facilities, and staff to run such an endeavor. No matter how you slice it, clubs need the casual player to stay in business to assist the elite. Period- yes it is youth sports, but it is also a business. Maybe non-proift, but still a business.
USSF Academy will be visiting MTA and SSM later this month.
If these programs gain acceptance into the Academy then teams in those age groups won't play in USYS leagues or in State Cup.
You folks who complain about that issue will soon get your wish.
Good luck to both of those programs, what age groups are we talking about?
The USSF Academy team/program ages are U16 and U18.
USSF Academy ages are U16 & U18. The U16's usually include U15s and the U18 team includes U17s.
Not as a rule 4:04. Sometimes there are kids who play up- but most high level clubs have teams at each age group (U15, U16, U17....) not every other year like many smaller community clubs (U14, U16, U18).
It DOES happen, but you make it sound like U16s and U18s USUALLY include younger players. It does happen, but not a lot in teams/clubs at the DAP level.
7:30...you are incorrect...our current roster for our u16 academy team has 93, 94 and 95's...we even have a 96 that is a developmental player (dev and full roster are designations). US Soccer has mandated that the Academy rosters be populated across birth years. Our U16 team made it all the way to the National Finals against Derby County with a roster that had 92, 93 and 94's all playing significant roles.
So, YES the u16's and u18's are both populated by mixed birth years...net effect is that u15,16,17,18 are all significantly impacted in a given talent pool. It's the way it should be...state cups and little trophies don't really matter for these players. I sincerely hope that SSM and whomever gets in the USSF Dev Academy..

If MTA and/or SSM are not playing state cup, that is just more MN teams who will be slaughtered, but 2nd tier teams from other states. Even MTA and SSM have trouble getting out of their group and other Region 2 states do have academies, thus top players out of the state cup pool.
The U19 MTA boys already clinched there spot at regionals.
No one else signed up for State Cup.
LOL
HAHHAHAHAAHHAAHHA OMG!
SO FUNNY!

With MTA now partnered with West Ham United International Academy, how long til they change their name to avoid confusion?
hey 8:50 - it is April 1!
Minnesota Thundering Hams?
Can I get a spiral cut one for Easter?
Anyone else hearing that Shattuck and MTA were admitted into the USSF Academy program?
That's the word down in Faribault.
Yep, SSM's strength likely helped MTA get in this year. Good for MN and for our top level boys!!!!!!!
SSM's strength isn't any different than MTA's. How many State Cup titles did SSM win the past few years.
It has nothing to do with State Cup titles. Does South Dakota's State Cup dominating club have a chance? Iowa's? I don't think so. It's about program strength and potential to develop elite level boys. MTA is on it's way on the boys side thanks to the merger. SSM's potential to attract and develop elite level boys is high and the program's future is very bright.
We'll see if MTA's EPL-ECNL-USSDA affiliations allow them to acquire other CCs with whom they are currently talking with. Might work, unless MYSA gets involved again.

It's great to see that SSM and MTA were admitted to the USSF Academy program.
This will definitely help consolidate talent and get the state of Minnesota more in line with the other region 2 states.
Congrats to the folks at SSM and MTA for pursuing this step that will greatly help soccer development for our boys here in Minnesota.
JONNY!!!!! MINYONGER!!!! excuse the spelling!!!!!! Yeah!!!
