valley 17b results please...

psa is the real deal - two years in a row advancing

Anonymous said...

Valley U17 Boys lost today 0-1 to finish with 1 win - 2 losses in bracket play.

Anonymous said...

yes, psa is the real deal... i can't remember the last boys team to advance in regionals two years in a row

Anonymous said...

PSA has that one special player who makes a difference. He gives them the same edge as Caroline Smith gave the Tsunami Sota team a few years back when they were in the National final 2 consecutive years.
That's not to say either PSA or Sota were one player teams. They both were/are very good teams without their game breakers but both had/have that one player to give them the edge in the big games.

PSA loses 3-1
Bangu U13's win 1-0
1 MN in the regional finals

Anonymous said...

I heard one of PSA's top players quit prior to State Cup and didn't travel with the team.
Anyone have anymore info or know if that's true?

Anonymous said...

PSA had two RED cards today, Hard to win with two players ejected!

Anonymous said...

Depends on when the RED's were handed out. If the score was already 3-1, then it's a sign of frustration or loss of composure. If they were early in an otherwise evenly played game, then I would agree.

Anonymous said...

nice to see the commaraderie between Bangu girls and PSA boys! They encouraged each other the whole stay down in Des moines. It wasn't about clubs, it was about trying to do well for Minnesota--good luck girls, bring home the hardware!!

Anonymous said...

No matter when red cards are issued, they are unacceptable for youth sports. Our youth have to learn how to be composed and be gracious in defeat and gracious in victory. It's that simple. This is a game and not end of life.

Kudos to the PSA youth for their hardwork - but we all must accept defeat and give credit to the Vardar team when credit is due.

tomASS said...

regionalsforilmimooh - don't be scolding about red cards when you have no clue what they were handed out for.

Do you even know all the reasons why a red card could be handed out?? One could be for good intention but bad execution if you have the right referee

Anonymous said...

tomass,

Three red cards in two consecutive years of State Cup / Region play by PSA. Pretty amazing for a U14 / U15 boys team. What are the coaches teaching these boys ???

How short is your memory? One of the PSA boys was ejected in the MN State Cup final last year with a red card. Then, the PSA team was widely criticized on this blog last month for its poor sportsmanship WHEN IT WON the state championship.

You're right. I wasn't at today's game. However the team's behavior and its reputation earned over the past thirteen months certainly doesn't earn an ounce of my respect OR the benefit of your doubt.

I'm a Bangu parent and I'm going to defend Jerry Yonga until I hear differently.
It is almost impossible for a coach to control all of his players every minute of every game.
As much as coaches attempt to instill discipline in some young players some of the kids just have to grow out of it.
The coach is helpless in some of these situations and many times takes an uncalled for rap on his reputation.
Unless the coach is yelling at his players to "take someone out" or is actually coaching overly aggressive play I'm going to defend the coach.
It's also tough in State Cup/Regional play when a player with a yellow card can't come off for just a few minures like in league play...if these games once you're off you're done for the half.
I wish Jerry's team would have won as they're a talented group who could have made some noise at nationals and done Minnesota proud.

tomASS said...

notapsafan - let me clarify

I was not so much directing my comments at the team or their action. I was directing my comments to the blanket statement of,

"No matter when red cards are issued, they are unacceptable for youth sports. Our youth have to learn how to be composed and be gracious in defeat and gracious in victory. It's that simple. This is a game and not end of life."

my comments were directed to someone acting like a player is going to be dammed to hell for receiving a red card without knowing the full breadth of the laws of the game. Red Cards are not always that simple and statements like that demonstrate to me someone never having played the game.

My comments could not be directed at the team itself since I did not witness any of events that resulted in the cards

tomASS said...

I do agree with bangu dad's comments he added while I posted

Anonymous said...

Tomass,

As I read the comments to regionalsforilmimooh, I see your point. Agreed.

Bangu Dad,

I respectfully disagree that discipline can't be taught. When I played high-level soccer as a fifteen year old, we were taught that red cards were to be avoided. Certainly, they were costly on the field. More importantly, we knew that our club valued its reputation, so red cards for fighting, violence, spitting, etc were dealt with harshly.

If you've coached, you know that it really isn't tough in State Cup / Regional play. I assume that you imply that it's easier to "cool off" a player when you can substitute them off of the field. This isn't necessary in any game with any substitution rules. Experienced coaches like Jerry should be able to call a player to the sideline and cool them down without the player leaving the pitch or the coach leaving the technical area.

If you've played the game, you should know that it really isn't that difficult to play smart after a yellow card for the remainder of the ninety minutes so your team doesn't play short.

I don't think coaches can or should control players during games. I do think that coaches can and should instill character in his players. The three-red-card track record for the past thirteen months in two state cup competitions are a poor reflection on the team. If these red cards were hard reds, the red cards issued today are a poor reflection on our state.

You imply that there were yellows issued early in one half or both halves. Were you at the game, or are you speculating? Do you have firsthand knowledge of the details from today's game? If so, please give the rest of us details.

notapsafan:
Today's game was well played though MI came out to play not wanting to lose to PSA for the second time. Remember the last time these two teams met in Midwest League, PSA beat Vardar 4-0. There was revenge factor here.
Remember PSA just beat Vardar better team last night to advance.

You may not like the PSA team but they are a good bunch with talent and discipline.

The ref could have done a better job of managing the game but he let his red cards do the talking. He let the game get out of hand. MI got (I believe) four yellow cards and 1 red and PSA (I believe got 1 yellow and 2 reds). Too many cards IMHO.

halfback jack said...

It depends on the reason for the ejection. I centered a match years ago where the defensive player (not the keeper) caught the ball on the goal line and denied an obvious goal while the score was tied. That is an automatic red card and is not a subjective call. Given the age and level of this match, I knew the defender made the conscious decision to do this. I actually found myself apologizing to him for having to issue the red, but he shrugged his shoulders and said that it was OK, he knew I had to do it.

The attacking team then proceeded to whiff on the PK. The defending team (now with 10 players) won the match in extra time.

In this instance, the defender took one for his mates and they responded accordingly.

If the ejections were for violent conduct, that is another matter.

Also keep in mind that these are usually not your garden-variety referees assigned to these matches. Most are probably grade 6 or grade 5 and were probably being assessed by USSF at the time.

Ok, I can't keep reading this without commenting. All the PSA parents will chuckle at me and know exactly who's writing this! I just can't keep quiet about certain things and can't believe how judgemental people are without having seen things firsthand.
First of all, I doubt few of the writers were even there in the first place. Jerry DOES NOT teach dirty play or accept poor conduct. When players get a yellow or even look like they're headed for one, he generally pulls them out. We beat Vardar 4-0 in MWRL Premier Division play in a very dicey game where we were subjected to lots of poor behavior by coaches, players and even parents from the opposition. They couldn't fathom that a team from "lowly Minnesota" had just thumped them inside and out. Were any of you there besides PSA parents. Doubtful.
Talk about coaching bad behavior...The Vardastar coaches definitely want their players to play cheap. One of their goals was to take out our players. Did any of you see the bruises on the drive home? Definitely no.
Has anyone mentioned that Vardar got the first red card for dirty play? The other Vardar players were incensed and things really got dicey. At that point they were instigating all sorts of stuff and the ref called a red card on us. PSA parents, didn't the other kid get a yellow at the same time? Was the kid supposed to let the other guy plow him over with his elbow in his mouth? A player has to hold his position, right?

Regarding the second card, I must defend the player because he is my son. Now all you PSA parents know me! As we pushed up to try and get another goal, my son was the lone guy back. The other guy got around him and he sprinted to catch up. Our goalie came out and the other kid actually got his shot started when my kid's foot tangled him and the opponent went down. He wasn't trying to hurt the kid and actually didn't mean to trip him but coudln't stop his momentum. Being a referee himself, he told me he knew the ref woud have no choice but to give him a card. He didn't sass the ref or make a stink. It was not malicious in any way and he accepted the call without saying "boo," which is what all players should do. I'm certain the PSA parents would agree that he' not a dirty player or trash talker, and always exhibits the highest good sportsmanship. As his parents, we do not condone poor behavior on or off the field, and hold our children very accountable. So, all of you know it alls, feel free to come to me to discuss this if you think you know so much. I'll defend my kid to the end.

I would also say that until your kids have played in the league we have, you really can't understand what it's really like. It is very physical whether you like it or not----if you don't hold your ground you'll get spit up and chewed out. It is way beyond anything we have in Minnesota soccer.

Ok, so I let it out. You can say whatever you want about us, but we love our boys, ALL of them. We respect Jerry for everything he does for them on and off the field. He cares about each one of them as people and what he is teaching them will make them better people for our world. I wish more coaches were like him.

anon,
why did the one PSA U15 player quit before regions?

Anonymous said...

The Bangu U13 girls just won regions on PKs.

Anonymous said...

Congrats to the U13 girls for making us MN proud. Good job Mark for bring home the championships.

Keep up the good work.

Last year we only had one team advance. This year we had two and a reggional champion.

Who knows maybe next year, we will have more teams out of their bracket!

Anonymous said...

Hey anon 9:54. do you think any of us care? I've been reading this blog for about a year and noticed that people are always asking about this kid or that kid from this club or that club to get the rumor mill going. Who cares and who knows and this question and all the ones like it are really no one's business except for those individuals (or teams or whoever is in question) may be.

Anonymous said...

Congratulations to the U13 Bangu girls. Regional Champs! What a fun team to watch.

Also, congratulation to Jerry and the u15 boys for their 2nd showing in the semi-finals. Jerry and the boys worked hard to get to where they were and hopefully we will be there again next year.

One last comment, to all of you who like to trash Jerry, I would not let my son play for anyone else.

PSA parent

This is anon 7:13 back again to say ditto to anon12:05. Congrats to those nice U13 Girls!! The boys are all happy for you and glad to have spent some time with you. Too bad there can't be more of that attitude between coaches, and parents from all our clubs. We could stand to learn something from these kids!

Hey anon 11:59 - good response to anon 9:54.

I heard that a Bangu Boys team down at Regionals got caught smoking pot? It seems like I hear this rummor every year regarding one team or another?

Anonymous said...

anon 3:38,
You heard?
Care to elaborate or are you content to spread rumors and innuendo?
Or do you have some sort of proof to back up this type of allegation?

Anonymous said...

I heard it was a player, not the team, and that the player is no longer with the team. Heard the same thing last year about the Wings 18s and also that one of their players was caught trying to buy beer with a fake id....not too suprising at this age group, but still very bad form.

tomASS said...

I heard they used a pot to cook some linguini. There was no pasta cauldron available. I think they made brownies in the same pot too

...more people trying to tear down something successful. If you keep throwing sh!t at the wall, some will eventually stick.

check out the new Bangu website

Anonymous said...

It looks like folks need not worry about whether or not the Bangu U14 Blue team or the U14 White team win the games this week.
From the sound of things both of those teams are opting out of premier and will play in MWRL.
All in all the new Bangu website is pretty nice.
The accomplishments speak for themselves. Their ad in Soccer Times was pretty powerful listing the recent successes.
I imagine they will have even more top players attending tryouts than last year.
The rich get richer.

I'm wondering if they have a typo on their new website which is nice, by the way, (http://www.bangutsunami.com/).
On the home page they say: "BTFC plans on entering teams into the MRL at the following genders/age groups/MRL levels:" For U16 boys (I assume it means current U15), it says: "Boys U16 First Division." Makes sense so far.
But I'm confused because on the tryout page (http://www.bangutsunami.com/0708-tryouts/), it says U16 Boys (Again, I assume that means the current U15 Boys), are for "MRL Premier," which I doubt could be true based on a 6th place finish in the first division this past spring season.

Can anyone clarify this? Thanks!

The BT site looks nice. Interesting to see how many teams are opting for MRL and college showcase tourneys. When do teams get the official word if they are accepted? Hopefully before tryouts???

Anonymous said...

anonymous 3:10 What are you talking about ??? Hope you can back up your comment..

Anonymous said...

Wow, great new site. Tons of info and club brags. Mark"eting" Abboud's hand is all over this site as evident by the similarities to his road to regionals site.

Lots of stuff that should spark debate once people take the time to really look through it. I'm sure there will be people who take issue with some of the content but the bar once again has been clearly raised. This club has progressed by leaps and bounds in recent years and IMO they are pulling other ccs along with them. Hats off to them, though neither of my kids will ever play for the club.

Anonymous said...

wild,
I have to agree with you. The CCs need to mimic what Bangu has done or get left in the dust. Their train isn't slowing down. I didn't think they would be able to match last years 7 state cup titles but they got 8 this year.
They will have even greater numbers at their tryouts this August.
Their structure with a boys director, girls director and also younger age director was mentioned on one of these blogs and makes a lot of sense. They also have a really strong group of coaches who like to be there because the club doesn't let the parents interfere with the coaches.
But it would be tough to be paying those big salaries to 3 directors when you have 1 director making big bucks at clubs like EDP, WNG etc.
