MTA looked to have an easier group by far,still some good results by both teams.Between them they lost 3 games which were against the higher level teams.
there are a lot of teams in the mix for state cup at 17's, Arsenal, MTA, St. Croix, Valley, Westside, Blackhawks, and maybe SSM if they participate, that is seven teams right there that could all win it, plus there are still another 3 premier teams in the mix there as well who no one really knows about in PSA, Lakeville, and Rochester
Congrats to both the MTA and SE boys for their success in Phoenix. Don't worry about the naysayers, most likely their teams wouldn't have even been accepted for this event. To advance out of your groups is a nice accomplishment.
SSM can't beat mediocre club teams this year 12-9-5 as of today. How can the possibley compete with the U18 group in MN?? Except for Champlin, they suck.
When SSM played the Thunder the Thunder was nowhere near full strength. They were missing several starters and in fact they had at least 2 playups from their U15 team and another 2 from their U16 team just so they could have enough players to play a decent match. Don't get your hopes up because it will be a very different team you'll play come State Cup time.
If I am reading their results correctly, it appears they played both the MTA Academy team- the group I think you are referring to and they played a team listed as "Minnesota Thunder." Which, as far as I know, is the name of a professional soccer team that competes in the USL.
I am not one of the SSM supporters who frequents this site, nor am I a MTA supporter. So dont jump down my throat. If you are a club/prep school plaing against a group of grown professionals or at least accomplished amatuers I wouldn't say there is too much shame in losing. Should "Minnesota Thunder" have been listed as Minnesota Thunder U18 or U17 instead?
I will agree with you that seeing a SSM team with a record like that is a bit of a suprise.
Another thing, why does everyone hate SSM so much? I think it seems like a really neat institution and soccer program.
Sam, I think the only issue anyone has with SSM is that they recruit nationally and offer scholarships worth up to $35K annually then compete in Minnesota State Cup against local teams comprised of players from one community or metro area. I think if they walked away from State Cup nobody would care what SSM did regarding soccer.
Scrimmages this time of year for most clubs are like spring training games for Major League Baeball teams. Coaches are fitting in new players and experimenting with players in different positions and trying out new formations. By "World Series/State Cup" time of year things look much different.
Even last years SSM team that was #2 at nationals could not beat the MN thuder, in season, with their actual player. This years team is lucky to beat any team that has a fan wearing a MN Thunder jersey.
SSM would be better if they actually had a coaching staff that could take advantage of their cherry-picked individual talent.
For anyone who thinks the U18 SSM boys are not good enough to beat the MN Thunder Academy they are probably smoking some funny things.
The SSM U18s have been playing the MN Thunder Professional squad, also they played the MN Thunder Academy U18 team once and completely dominated them, but gave up an own goal to make the final score 2-2. Ask any coach that was watching that game, it was clear who was the better team. Oh and for the "not full strength" remark, the SSM u18 boys were not full strength at all when they played the MN Thunder Academy.
But I guess all this chat means nothing, just wait till the state cup final where SSM will crush whichever team makes it to the final.
The Minnesota thunder team came with 12 guys and 3 of them play U16.. They had one kid who actually plays defense at the game. Shattuck is good but their attack is nothing to talk about. The state final could go either way, but no one else should compete

looks like the finalists in the Phoenix tournaments were the teams that MTA and SE lost to in the quarterfinals.
