'08 Boys Sectionals

Similar to last year, 10-12 teams have a chance to win state at AA and A. Many good teams but no dominant team that will steam roll into state. This should be one of the most competitive tournaments is quite some time.

Section brackets:

Section 1: A -- AA
Section 2: A -- AA
Section 3: A -- AA
Section 4: A -- AA
Section 5: A -- AA
Section 6: A -- AA
Section 7: A -- AA
Section 8: A -- AA

Do these section and conference reps have term limit?

Anonymous said...

Good question.

Anonymous said...

10:06 if what you said is true about collin, then why the coaches this year didn't look at those same quality instead they look at stats? don't get it...

Anonymous said...

Colin was a bad joke last year. At least WB has some strong stats going for him and his team is doing well. Last year there were slewth of good players to choose from.

Anonymous said...

Put term limit of these reps (old geezers) and turn them over. Let the new generation begins.

all state selections??? anyone?

WB
DF
those are the two i knew of..

Anyone who went to the banquet buy a t-shirt? Take a look at the back and let us know whose names you see.

Heard tell that this years All State & Mr. Soccer selections were pure stats. No stats, no recognition. Which of course will hurt H.S. Soccer in the long run. Players will get the message, screw your team it all about ME!

CM of Wayzata was the best player in the state in 2007 and a deserving winner. CM of Sibley and MH of Apple Valley were great players, but not as good. Wayzata was the best team out of those teams too.

RG is the best player in the state in 2008. WB is a great player and had a great season and is more than deserving of Mr. Soccer. DF is a great player but his team isn't as great.

I would probably take any of the above 6 mentioned players over you or your child if I were forming a team.

Anonymous said...

I thnk everyone should remember that these players you are talking about are KIDS playing youth soccer. Referring to anyone that has received Mr. Soccer as a "joke" is inappropriate to say the least. Most of you write as if you have all the information out there on all 1300+ (2600+ for A and AA players) and an understanding of the game beyond anyone else. Ranking players and deciding who receives awards is an imperfect science and the coaches do their best with the information they have. There seems to be a lot of people on this blog who thinks things were better when they played. Not unlike the seniors who graduate and think the programs will fall apart without them. In actuality the quality and depth of talent in the state has grown tremendously. There was probably a half dozen kids that could have received the honor and congratulations to Whitney for earning it. The conf player ranking system is basically a compromise among coaches that doesn't allow for one team to dominate. Take into consideration the all-metro team when that comes out as coaches can be more honest in their evaluation of players through that channel. There will be some surprises on that list with players that deserve recognition and are lesser known. Again, let's not confuse this with anything other than youth soccer. congrats to the teams who advanced to state and best of luck.

Colin M was a joke for winning last year. It was entitlement for him. Others are more deserving. Wayzata coach knew how to pull the strings.

The All State Process really need to be revised. The old boys network needs to make way for something that is objective. The list this year is a testimonial to the fact that it matters who you play for not how you play or how good your team competes.
The process should take place after Sections are finished to see how players play against good competion. To select on padded stats built on the ability to do well against lesser opponents is a terrible way to reward players. Look at the play of players when they are matched by quality opponents which is generally at the end of Sections.

Anonymous said...

Ditto's to the above. These are kids and should be treated as such, with respect just as we would want others to treat our own kids. It's fine to have an opinion and state why you may have thought a particularly player deserved the award, but that doesn't mean you have to trash another player in the process.

Congrats to this years winners. As with anything, I'm sure there are some deserving that were missed. I agree that overall, the quality of the players in the state is up. I don't buy into the old story I've heard more than once on this site from commenters who say that players aren't as good, the Thunder aren't as good, in fact nothing much is as good as the old days. Sorry, but the quality in both cases just keeps getting better and better.

Anonymous said...

I'd say WB is the right choice. They give the award to the HS player with a big impact. Not the best club soccer player.

Totally agreed.

Tim Paulson 11 Wayzata

2007
Colin Monasterio 12 Wayzata

7:03 is an idiot, a bitter, jealous idiot. There wasn't any string pulling. How many games did Wayzata win in 2007 and 2006? Winning helps. Being ranked #1 helps. Being the best player and a top player on that kind of team helps.

The Wayzata coaches didn't need to pull strings. Their team and their players spoke for themselves. I'm not even a fan of Wayzata, I don't think anyone is, but they had the best players. CM in 2007 was an easy choice for me, just like WB in 2008.

How about All-State Honorable Mentioned list?

Anonymous said...

Honorable Mention was not in the Star Tribune. Well have to wait for the web site update.

I also heard that Fridley had three player listed for All State. 1 was academically ineligible, two got into physical altercations with a referee at sectionals. Thus losing their awards.

This selection for All-State and HM awards is one political battle.

Coaches ranking and # awards
#1 Apple Valley - 1 <--- ONE???
#2 Eden Prairie - 2
#3 Osseo - 1 <--- ONE???
#4 Coon Rapids - 3 <--- THE MOST!
#5 Eagan - 0 <--- NO RESPECT?
#6 St. Louis Park - 2
#7 Woodbury - 2
#8 Stillwater - 2
#9 Armstrong - 2
#10 - Mpls Southwest - 1

Do you see problems with this?

Anonymous said...

AV and Osseo have a case to bitch here and Eagan just got NO RESPECT at all.

This system needs a CHANGE!

Anonymous said...

I don't believe it's Section Reps do the voting. I think it's coming from Conference Reps. Do you know who are they for AV, Eagan, Osseo?

Anonymous said...

"I don't believe it's Section Reps do the voting. I think it's coming from Conference Reps. Do you know who are they for AV, Eagan, Osseo?"

This is interesting and I'd like to follow up on this. Does anyone know specifically how these choices are made?

As someone stated, defenders? Also, I don't want to be disrespectful to anyone listed but I see from the list that there are a number of kids who clearly made the list because of goals scored, when I know that players team had a more skillful and talented (in my opinion) midfield player or defender who did not get chosen. Goals may very well get you on the ballet or get you noticed.

Anonymous said...

Conference coaches nominate and rank players. That list goes to State Soccer Coaches Associate and Section Reps do the voting. Blame of political in-fighting with the coaches for player ranking in the conference. If your coach doesn't get along or get no respect from coaches in the same conference, then your player is hosed. It's one fricking farce.

Anonymous said...

Why Eagan has no awards when it's voted #5 in State by the coaches. I don't get this. I guess Eagan has no respect from conference coaches.

Anonymous said...

No disrespect intended but as someone earlier mentioned, All-state is about what school you play for and if your high school team has a winning record, there are plenty of players that play for schools that don't have winning records and if they were at different schools they would be recognized for their abilities. There is no exact science for selecting players for All-State so until there is a better way for selecting players there will always be head scratching on selections.
All I can say is that there needs to be a better way to select players, I would venture to guess that some of the selections were never even seen in a game by some of those doing the selection.
Maybe it is time to use technology and have all games taped and when a player is nominated then game tapes can be viewed by the voting committee. I know this would take longer but you would probably create a better selections vs the good ole boy network.

Just my opinion.

Because of how All-State is selected, some conference and or Sections are screwed. For example, .NWSC is all Class AA w/ 10 teams, 2 at the State Tournament. Have teams like Osseo, Park Center, Anoka, Champlin Park, Coon Rapids, Elk River, and Maple Grove, get only 12 player and 2 goalies to submit for All State.

The North Suburban Conference w/11 teams, two at the State Tournament. Have teams like St. Louis Park, Spring Lake Park, Totino Grace, Benilde-St. Margaret, North Branch, Irondale, Fridley but because they have teams that are both A & AA, they get 24 field players & 4 goalies to submit for All State. Therefore, St. Louis Park and Spring Lake Park probably have four players each represented for All State Selections.

Now here were the politics come in. No team can submit more than three field player and 1goalie. Coon Rapids has definitely come out smelling. A lower ranked player from a given conference cannot be selected before a higher ranked player from that same conference is selected. A lower ranked player from one Conference can be selected before a higher ranked player from a different conference. Therefore, for the teams playing in sections 5A who were represented by the Spring Lake Park Coach actually got two players and one of his own players on the All State roster. Nevertheless, from his conference three other players beside his own made the All State roster. However, was representing Osseo, Park Center, Champlin Park, and Maple Grove, who all got a slap in the face. JJ from Coon Rapids represented his Section got three player on the all state from his team, the Anoka throw in kid, St. Francis kid & North Branch player. Nevertheless, his team played in the same conference as Osseo, Park Center, Champlin Park and Maple Grove. I would be very interested to see what those player rankings from the NWSC looked like. Remember the conference only get 12 field players and two goalies. From what I can tell, all three CR kids must have been ranked before any of the other Osseo players or Champlin Park Players and to a lesser extent Maple Grove. This is just plain ridiculous to those who have seen these teams play, Coon Rapids plays a solid team work game because they played together all summer and do not suffer the communication problems most others struggle with. But to say that Osseo & Champlin Park did not have one player on either of their teams better than that kid is just insane. I would say Pugh & Smith took it on the chin.

The main thing I think to remember is in the typical MNHSL fashion in an effort to make it fair, this is not a true representation of the 12 or even 24 best players in the state. Everyone always carries on about how political ODP is well, this certainly tops anything I ever seen in ODP.

Anonymous said...

Should Eagan Kurt Vigil be kissing *ss to get awards for his players? That's not right at all.

Anonymous said...

11:24 JJ is very selfserving person to tell you the truth.

Anonymous said...

The Park Center kid is quite good and actually Cooper has one of the top 10 players in the state, but that team isn't very good. he should still be deserving. higher ranked teams may have more depth and overall talent, but that doesn't automatically their top kid is better than a lower teams top kid.

Anonymous said...

Jason Jacob should resign from his post immediately.

Anonymous said...

Should CR #3 be above Osseo #2 or Champlin Park #1?

Jason Jacob is Section 7 and he made a case for selfserving.

Anonymous said...

Put Ben Vulu in selfserving case as well. Both of them should resign immediately.

Anonymous said...

Where was Section 5 Rep Jake Smothers to make a case for Osseo and Champlin Park?

Anonymous said...

That Park Center kid is lights-out. I'd like him on my team.

Anonymous said...

Selfserving or abused of power.
Either case Jason and Ben should resign.

Anonymous said...

The Banquet was great. First time our family has participated. Congrats to everyone!

Anonymous said...

Interesting to see that a few Sophomores made the list for Hon. Mention. Those guys should be rockstars for the next two years. Two goalies too--Stillwater and MG.

I didn't see the Stillwater kid, but they MG keeper could/should have been all-state. Best I saw this year--including the kid from CR.

And how did Bah and Hoang not get a mention from Osseo? Rookie mistake?

Anonymous said...

Again, Conferences rank the players, Coaches in the conference vote on the rank the players. Perhaps someone should post the NWSC coaches rankings? I have a hard time beleiving CR had those three players in the top ten in the conference.

Park Center kid is good, he just didn't play all that much due to an injury. On the same hand there are other players in the same conference who are equally as talented and played the whole season but are not mentioned. How do you rank a player who missed about 1/4 to 1/2 the season over hmm...a defender who played all year. Well it could be those peskie stats again.

Anonymous said...

Section 7 Rep Jason jacob got most awards and how Section 7 Jake Smothers got any? Jake you should stand up against abused of power.

Anonymous said...

NWSC reps are Barry Arrowsmith (Blaine Coach) and Tom Olson (Elk River Coach). They should have the ranking list.

Anonymous said...

Jake is rep for Section 5. Osseo and CP are in that section.

Anonymous said...

According to the MN State High School Coaches web site, they get ranked by their conference and then represented by their sections. But #2 ranked player from your conference cannot be selected before the #3 player in your conference. The coaches in the conference vote on the ranking.

Here what we can surmise so far:
1.Whitney Brown, Osseo, F, sr.
2.Joe Gustafson, Anoka, F, sr.
3.Adam Pappas, Coon Rapids, MF, sr.
4.David Saidu, Park Center, F, sr.
Honorable Mention
5.Lawrence Talery, Coon Rapids, F, jr.
6.Eric Collins, Maple Grove, D, sr.

Goalie's (2 selection for the conference)
1.Josh Biernat, Coon Rapids, sr.
2.Cody Cropper, Maple Grove, soph.

Sorry, but Biernat got the #1 ranking because he was a senior. I have a hard time seeing the coaches paying attention to this so it would be interesting to see those tabulations.

Lawrence Talery, is strictly a stats thing, there are way too many other players in the conference that are light years beyond this kid in talent and skill. Notice there is only one MF, I still question that even he he would be listed above some of the other midfielders in the conference....Hoang, Baker or even Robson. All better players but without the stats or the representation not much could be done for them.

So, the best you can say about All-State is it is a list of players. Is it the Top team in the state...ummm NO.

Anonymous said...

I can't believe parents care this much about the All-State Award. The award doesn't even matter. Playing in state is what will get you recognition.

If your team got the shaft, that means your own coach didn't go to bat for you to get you a high player ranking in your conference. It has nothing to do with the other coaches as coaches only see other teams once or twice. So unless other coaches in the conference know who you are through Club or ODP, it all falls on your own coach to lobby for you.

Anonymous said...

"Put Ben Vulu in selfserving case as well. Both of them should resign immediately."

Again I am going to say that instead of finger pointing, there needs to be a system that doesn't allow one person to make all the decisions. Beside, that puts to much pressure on that one person. They may be doing there best. With a small committee it's less likely that there would be as much favoritism.

Am I wrong?

Seniors Regional ODP Players
Michael Gandier of Hasting/Shattuck St. Mary’s, William Johnson of Faribault/Shattuck St. Mary’s, Henry Robson of Champlin/Champlin Park, Luke Sollie of Lakeville/Shattuck St. Mary’s, Dula Fadis of Minneapolis/Mps South, Rodrigo Galvan of St. Paul/Humbolt, Abdi Hassan of Minneapolis/ Southwest? Whitney Browne of Brooklyn Park/Osseo –
2 made All State

Junior Regional ODP Players, Ayub Baker of Brooklyn Center/Champlin, Patrick Donyen of Crystal/Shattuck St. Mary’s, Hamad Jaman of Roseville, Brandon Wolf of Rosemount/Rosemount, Paul Yonga of Brooklyn Park/Totino Grace,
1 made All State

Sophmore Regional ODP Players
Mark Gormley of Minneapolis/ , Ebenezer Mengistu of Cottage Grove, Eric Miller of Woodbury, Andrew Rorick of North Mankato, David Zalk of Maplewood Isaac Kannah of Brooklyn Park, Adam Mohamed of Mankato
1 All State I think Akram Mohamed or Adam Mohamed?

Everyone claims ODP is political. All State while political is also messed up with MNHSL rules to “make it fair” so it is not a true list of the best players. However, realize your High School Coach represents you. Poor representation by your coach will probably not over come any ODP or Club recognition. From what I can see here Champlin Park, Humbolt, Mpls Southwest and even Osseo coaches did a poor job representing their players. To a lesser extent Roseville, & Rosemount coaches beware and be ready to step up to the plate.

not sure on teams..but teams with premier players who often play games on turf should really benefit. The top players should be really comfortable if they have a good touch...boot ball will work no longer.

Don't foget that ODP is not what it used to be with US Club adding ODP and especially the USSF academy program for player identification. OH north and south, IL, MI, MO, IA, IN and other states are already placing players directly in the pool through their academies. The number of MN players "making the pool" has risen. However, you can talk with any ODP coach, outside of this years U17s, the quality of MN player is down significantly.

WB is a very good player. On any given day, other seniors are better. But you can't say he didn't deserve the award.

5:51 "you can talk with any ODP coach, outside of this years U17s, the quality of MN player is down significantly." Yeah, yeah your son is great. Everybody else suck but my son is great. Whatever dude, go watch a hockey game.

Competition for those spots in MN has probably increased, as SSM has brought players in from out of state. Regardless, those players making the Regional team can easily be identified as some of the best players in the state and are recognized as such by any college coach in the nation. As MN does not have an academy nor any US Club Soccer of significance it probably holds more weight than someone who lives in IL.

As political as ODP is, those selections are still probably more accurate than the All State Team as 1) no one is keeping their stats, it is based on players performance that is being watched by the coaches at the time 2) They are actually fielding a team with more than three defenders on it. The All State team this year is a joke, it was obviously driven by stats and a few Sections Reps/Coaches.

All metro 1st team is out:

Forwards
• Whitney Browne, Osseo: Metro Player of the Year has 31 goals and led Orioles to state tourney.

• Dan Killen, St. Bernard's: 32 goals tied for best in metro area; won Class 1A Mr. Soccer.

• Ryan MacArthur, Zimmerman: 25 goals was among metro's best.

• Sam Hyneh, Mpls. South: 11 goals, 11 assists.

Midfielders
• Carlos Contreras, jr., White Bear Lake: Strong on the ball.

• Dula Fadis, Mpls. South: 23 goals for strong team.

• Rodrigo Galvan, St. Paul Humboldt: Division I talent could flourish at next level.

• Paul Yonga, jr., Totino-Grace: 43 points for top Class 1A team.

Defenders
• Bijan Jabari, jr., Apple Valley: Stalwart for top Class 2A team.

• Chad Gilmer, Bloomington Jefferson: One of best players in strong conference.

Goalkeeper
• Rollie Thayer, Minnetonka: A stone wall for the Skippers.

for those who never saw Sam Hyneh for Minneapolis South he is a top 5 player, good to see him get this. Nice job to all 11.

Why the hate for AV? Because people can't decide if they like local community clubs or recruiting select clubs.

AV punishes players for leaving Valley United and the coach is a converted baseball/football coach who benefits from great numbers in their youth program.

BJ loses every player to various select clubs as BYSC has always struggled and their coach is a part-time professional coach.

People hate both teams. They're completely different, yet they both win. I suppose people hate teams that win. I hate the Yankees. I love Man U.

Interesting All Metro team.. only 4 players led their respective teams to the state tournament I believe: Browne, Yonga, Gilmer and Jabari. Not to beat and old horse, but these selections should consider much more than stats and one's ability to score a hat trick against weak competition. Leadership, ability to make one's teammates better, consistency on both sides of the ball, and ability to lead one's team to victory in the postseason should all have just as much weight-if not more- than goals and assists in determining All State, All Metro, Mr. Soccer, etc... These characteristics are the reasons why we will remember names such as Pele, Maradona, and Zidane for years and years to come.

With that said, my vote goes to PY. He contains the best combination of the aforementioned characteristics as well as club and ODP experience- regardless of class. TG will win another state championship this year much in part to him.

We need a change in the selection system. Selfserving reps should resign and have a small committee to work on the awards.

The Section Reps take care of themselves every year. Look at last years A list. Heritage Christian places 2 kids on All State list, including a Keeper that gave up 40 plus goals. The system makes no sense but to quote my son its just High school soccer......

Any coaches in state tournament teams coaching premier level or ODP in the summer?

Rank these coaches based on soccer experience and knowledge.

Anonymous said...

The coachs in the selection comitee have guidlines they must follow, I will lay out a few.
First of all a coach must fill out the proper forms and submit them by the deadline, often times coachs are lazy or do not understand that they need to do this so a good player can miss his oportunity. The coach of the player submited must be a member of the mshsca by Oct. 1. The commitee then looks at the players ranking in there conference and picks accordingly. The players conference ranking is determined by all of the coachs in that players conference so most of the selection process is done by the conference coachs. Now it comes down to extra spots available. Club soccer is not a judgeing criteria. So for these extra spots the all state commitee must choose. These coachs on the commitee do not get paid and do not want to take much time out of there schedule to pick kids (even though they should) so they pick from there own conferences and teams to finish out the list.

P.S. Rodrigo had a bad year. Red cards lazy play and a overall bad attitude. I watched him play 5 games and in each game he received a yellow for takeing down players. If he had any drive he could play in college, but he has already missed his window, he is not going to Madison and that is a fact. I would love to see him do something with his talents but right now he is just wasteing away.

PY plays in Class A and he's only a junior. I think Pele, Maradona and Zidane will be remembered for a lot of the goals they scored. Hand of God? Half field run against England? Two header goals in 98?

Your own coach is lobbying for the players. He understands if your player carries those mentioned intangibles more than anyone else. Apparently your own coach values goals more than those intangibles.

Who would be on this small committee? A handful of "self-serving section reps?" How would it be any different?

Anonymous said...

9:19 It's better to have more brains at work than just one selfserving rep.

Osseo coach obviously submitted the proper paper work as WB is Mr. Soccer. To trash the rest of the team seems strange, or are you saying that he only submitted WB?

How do parents/schools find out if their coach is on top of things? It would be interesting for Booster and school to have that information.

I don't think anyone has a problem with a sections representative representing their conference or even their sections. I think the problem occurs when they only represent their team. A couple of these guys should be ashamed of themselves.

CR must have some major connections because the jr that made All State/All Metro is NOT good. But if you are lazy and just looking at the better teams and their stats, that what happens I guess.

It is too bad for RG, I wonder how much of the behavior you saw was frustration?

Anonymous said...

The best team is decided in the tournaments or conference records. Some of these players are playing on very weak teams and some are playing on very strong teams. One man cannot win a tournament and this recognition for the all-metro and all-state is very well deserved I am sure by the players who earned it. This is recognition for the players, not the teams.

Anonymous said...

Jason Jacob and Ben Vulu are the case here.

Anonymous said...

You don't want boosters or parents involved. You want to talk about having a special interest. You have to hope that you AD hires a good coach and that the coach is organized and gets the paper work done. Some coaches don't nominate certain kids for reason that go beyond the soccer field and most coaches in the conference don't put kids up in the rankings of players because of red cards, suspensions, or other reasons. That happened to a player this year.

Anon 12:32 I think the key word in your post is "hopes" as booster and parents raise money for programs it would be nice to know if the coaches are holding up their end of the bargin. No one needs to know who is submitted, they just need to know that it was submitted. Especially, when the excuse is made that some coaches and players were not selected because the coach may have forgotten to send in the paper work.

Johnson and Storlien are very good friends. Should make for an interesting match up.

Anonymous said...

I'm not an Osseo parent/fan but I have seen them play a couple of times:
- They are not a one man team
- Their starting 7 have speed, quickness and ball skills
- They maintain shape and knock the ball around with short crisp passes
- If you pack it in, you will lose as they will put tremendous pressure
- They can be beaten if you keep the play in the midfield and counter.
- Slow the game down by possessing. You boot, you play into their strong suit which is speed
- Attack the middle and right side of their defense as they are vulnerable
- Put the ball in the frame whenever possible as their keeper is shaky

I would still say they are the favorites but it's still a wide open tournament. That's why you play the game.

Good luck to all the teams and enjoy watching the teams compete.

Scanlon tactical? By that you mean lump it over the top and have fast, non-soccer players run after it? AVs tactics have always been awful. They benefit from large numbers, athletic rich traditions and well funded programs. Still they have been able to re-load every year. But it wouldn't matter who their coach was...it could be Al Frankin and they would still win games and go to state.

Decoy? I know it is duck hunting season but this decoy will score if you do not mark him. That is what makes WB SO IMPORTANT TO THIS TEAM! He is dangerous with or without the ball because he will always attract 2 or 3 defenders which frees up his very talented team mates. If Osseo is able to shore up their defense and reaches the finals, his teammates will be recognized! It is obvious that you are a Dula f supporter who as far as I know has not done zippo for his team since the Gibbons boys graduated ! http://www.startribune.com/sports/preps/31359299.html?elr=KArksi8cyaiUeyD8_o8cyaiUiD3aPc:_Yyc:aUU

That was one gutsy call when only down 1-0 at half. Plenty of time to score and they let WB standing.

It took them 30 minutes to score the first and then second came in 2 minutes after.

I would say MG coaches got out-coached! They didn't see it coming and going.

You are pathetic. I may be pathetic for me even replying to someone as twisted and confused as you are. Your hatred and jealousy for anything and everything relating to SE is not surprising, as success breeds contempt, but what IS surprising is how you explicitly state how you come here to read about young, talented soccer players getting bashed by their inferior peers and/or jealous parents (even worse by the way). I am taking it you are a player at the youth level as your spelling and grammar and just basic lack of tolerance could not indicate otherwise.

Enjoy your remaining months/years playing for mediocre club and HS teams. If all you have left is reading about players better than you trying to make it getting bashed, than I feel sorry for you. If not, go outside, practice your game, and get better, cause MN could use more talent, not individuals of your kind (players or parents) trying to bring down our hardworking coaches and players

Anonymous said...

It's interesting that:

- the 2008 Mr. Soccer was a U16 player.
- many consider the junior from Totino Grace to be the best player. He too was a U16 player.
- some say that the Mr. Soccer winner, who scored all kinds of goals this fall, was limited in the U16 Premier League.
- a U16 player lit up a bunch of U17 players this fall in high school but was limited while playing in the U16 league last summer.
- a number of the best U16 players didn't play high school soccer this fall because they are playing elsewhere at a higher level.

I think this is further evidence that the U16 age group and the U16 league from 2008 is probably the strongest this state has seen in many, many years.

Anonymous said...

Seven starters from the number one ranked team in the state also played U16 last summer

Anonymous said...

It's good to see WB as the BEST U16 player. Better than Paul Yonga.

Anonymous said...

Both boys are exceptional talents but let us remember that one is a midfielder and the other is a striker! Different skills sets but equally as important to how they impact a team! Same problem when you compare CM to a Mike H!Bottom line is how these boys are able to elevate their game and their team during the big ones! The real issue for Osseo is no team has ever won a state championship after having allowed 33 GOALS in a given season! The new goalie has allowed 6 after only 6 games and now he has to face some teams that can pressure their backline! I am sure Lakeville N has seen this and will try to exploit this weakness.

Anonymous said...

WB was not a decoy. All they did was move him to the outside, which got him more space for his 1-1 skills. He was still a star. MG didn't triple team him--he would just dribble up the middle, forcing multiple defenders to collapse on him. Do you think it would have been a close game if MG left two Osseo players wide open?

Anonymous said...

Yonga is way better than WB if you seen them play in the summer against good competion the difference is clear.

Anonymous said...

2:43, I agree.

More power to WB for carrying a team that gives up so many goals to the state tournament. Imagine if he played for a better defensive team like Eden Prairie. Though I suppose he'd be substituted every 10 minutes then (sorry EP).

Maybe the best D is a good O.

Is 6 goals against in 6 games bad? That's news to me.

Anonymous said...

The goal scored by Maple Grove was a ridiculous free kick from thirty yds out that bounced over his head on grass. This kid was a field player they suited up because their regular goalie had already given up 27 goals. Maple Grove did not have any offense that could test the guy even though they exploited Osseo's right back.Park Center scored 2 goals in their section match which means if you can take shot at the guy, you will see that he is not a very good goalie.Osseo will need to dominate the midfield to protect this goalie! My point is, a team that gives up 33 goals means the defense is suspect and having an inexperienced goalie does not help!

Anonymous said...

Anybody know...How can you find out if a players name was even submitted for consideration for All State.

Who are the coaches on this years selection committees.

Here are my problems with the SE U16 2008 boys & JY/Kufray: 1) we have been hearing for years how they are so-o-o much better than any other age group in the state. The same thing we heard when JY older son played soccer. However, here are the facts they went to regionals and did well 1 year. One year is not a dynasty. As the other boys in the region caught up with the SE players who either matured early or have questionable birth certificates have become less dominate. (Why do you think so many of them did not stay at the Regional ODP camp?) 2) JY/Kufray have caused more destruction than any other two men in MN. They have rob parents or mislead parents (however you want to say it), destroyed clubs and have left a trail of broken teams behind them wherever they have gone spanning 10 years of MN Soccer. Remember this is not JY first time around the block, his older son benefited from some of the same stunts and tricks.

PY maybe a good soccer player, other than changing his last name, his dad reputation and actions will preceded him. The older son ended up playing in SD because of his dad. I would like to feel bad for the kid, but ever time somebody whines about how unfair it is for PY, I just cannot. Karma is the word that comes to mind.

Anonymous said...

I'm neutral but didnt SEagles go to the semis twice?Seems they were a very good team for two years at least.
Where is PY playing in 09?Did he go with the new Bangu?

Anonymous said...

Kufray is very selfish and destructive to others. He only cares for himself.

Anonymous said...

2:43 WB used as decoy and drew best defenders to him? If it wasn't for that then how those goals got there? Less experience defenders inside and KABOOM! That was a powerful header and left the sophomore GK crying...mama!

Anonymous said...

6:05-Yes they did go to the semis twice. In their first two years no one ever wrote anything about them-it was all Bangu and Wings chatter. As they had more increased success, people started to take notice and then the potshots started. Then some people heard about this blog and started to respond, probably not a good move in retrospect. Should have just stopped reading this or not "taken the bait."

PY is a skilled, unselfish, smart, TEAM player. He's a really great kid. All his SE buddies and families wish him the very best and will miss him.

Anonymous said...

Where's Kufray now? I hope he's not in charge of another team.

Anonymous said...

All that is true but Osseo has many strengths and many weaknesses. They attack very hard and when they do, teams get very scared. But, their #21 sucks, their left back plays like hes from the lost planet(and looks like it too), the bald kid in the center back who is now on the bench just can move the ball more than 10 feet, and their goalie got chipped from 40 yards out. If any of these weaknesses get expossed, osseo could be in big trouble against Lkvl North, who can put away goals right where their mama hides the cookie jar, like jedi knights on the attack against darth vader.

Anonymous said...

We're from lakeville north and we're licking our chops on this one. we gonna push everybody up. we only put 1 defender on wb. he ain't dangerous.

Anonymous said...

Any scores from tonight's games?

Anonymous said...

Let us remember both teams were knocked out in their first section game last year so this is unchartered territory for both lakeville N and Osseo. Even though Osseo is shaky defensively, Lakeville N also allowed 27 goals in the season and they have not faced an offensive team like Osseo. Mark WB with one guy and you will be toast!I think Osseo will win the middle on this match and advance but will be really challenged in the semis because of their defense. It should be exciting!
