'08 Boys Sectionals

Similar to last year, 10-12 teams have a chance to win state at AA and A. Many good teams but no dominant team that will steam roll into state. This should be one of the most competitive tournaments is quite some time.

Section 2: A -- AA
Section 3: A -- AA
Section 4: A -- AA
Section 5: A -- AA

Elk River studs made Osseo look like road kill. Hellooooo!

Anonymous said...

3:58,
I disagree with both of your arguments. I don't think you look at the bigger picture and you sound like an angry person. I think 2:49 is on to something and that you're on something.

Anonymous said...

Andover yes ANDOVER STUDS ran over dead Elks. HELLOOOOOOOOOO!!!

I believe the u16,now 17s is by far the most talented age group with a ton of depth. The fact that the talent is spread has been a healthy thing,it has increased the competitivness at the age.
MTA is not the way forward.

Anonymous said...

I have no ties to any big school or any big player.A friend of mine who has reffed about a million school games this fall says Paul Yonga is by far the top player he has seen,I dont know who my friend has not seen.
I believe the touted kid from Osseo played c.m. at Wings, probably why he scored a lot less, plus the u16 premier level is miles beyond high school, you wont get triple teamed!
I hear two other Wings 16s are scoring a lot of goals at Armstrong, yet they played WITH Osseo kid on the Wings and nobody could score, strange.
If I had a vote for Mr Soccer I'd decline, its a team game,

RG was not even voted the best player in his conference. He will not play college soccer and his best days are behind him.Play harder or hang them up RG.

Comparing one age group to another is just plain stupid. Saying one age group is better than another only indicated that parents are over involved.

Anonymous said...

3:58, you anger speaks for itself. you are definelty not a soccer mom or dad. maybe you are a hockey mom and should be watching hockey instead. if you were watching the last few years, you missed some of the best talented players and today you are nowhere to cry over your soup and cry over the milk you did not drink - its on the floor. so you wernt to regionals and got whooped. so you want to be regconginzed but ashamed to admit that you are st. croix parent. one night stand for you baby. did somebody see your talented players at regionals? oh you almost beat nebraska-whO? my mom is asking about you and she can't understand why you are so bitter and from minnesooota.

Anonymous said...

wow 3:49 and 7:09 both need to calm down. Lots of hate and spite by both. I figure every year brings something new so stop bashing each other and hold on to your seats---these kids are all improving and it will make for great competition next spring! Isn't that what will ultimately help them all become better? Yeah, I'm a parent from one of these teams and feel we both have been bashed by others and bashed by each other enough...

Why you think Champlin Park will lose to MG?

Anonymous said...

Why You Think?

Anonymous said...

Because your from MG?

Anonymous said...

I saw the first game between the two. Does CP have players back from injury or something? That time they were not the better team. Definitely had a few better players, but several guys on the field were weak, e.g. outside backs. Keep chipping it to the corner and CP is done.

Anonymous said...

If I sound angry, I probably was. I'm just plain tired of SE/and supporting community who feel the need to bash EVERYONE that is not in their circle. We have all listened to it for 3 years, enough already. I don't have a kid in the age group, HALLALULIA!

Anon 7:09 post is fairly typical of this group. I dare 7:09 to post one positive thing about a non a immigrant player. Say one nice thing about the St. Croix team. One nice thing about an Eden Prairie player. One nice thing about a Bangu player.

Anon 3:58

Anonymous said...

CP has several players back from injury. But you are correct CP has been weak on the outside. CP is strong on the inside and has both speed and some size. MG has a very good goalie. Both teams know each other very well.

The field is in horrible condition. To make matter worse, the CP athletic director schedule a JV football game on it at 11:00 am.

Given all that, it should be a very fun game to watch, and hard to predict what the out come will be.

Anonymous said...

Can JV soccer play in stadium?

Anonymous said...

I agree with 10:12...they are nothing now so how about their parents and coach stop hyping their former players. Few "immigrant" players have what it takes to play soccer at a higher level.

I will say that Martin Browne, WB's older brother IS one that has done well at the next level...but he never played for SE!

For those of you that have been bashing WB, you may want to watch him live and you will see that this kid can play. By the way he is also being recruited by UW Madison. Give credit where it is due. Osseo would not be where they are now without WB.

Apple Valley vs Eagan/Eastview winner Tuesday night

Anonymous said...

The MG keeper won the game. Champlin Park controlled the game and the braintrust for MG were up to their old tricks of bootball and packing it in their end. Ugly win for MG. It's fortunate they have one heck of a keeper.

Anonymous said...

4:00 I guess they figured out how to win. That's the point, right? That MG keeper is a sophomore. Look to see more of that kid...

Anonymous said...

Lets be realistic, very few teams play by passing the ball 10 times in a row. Everyone plays direct at times in HS soccer. The best teams in the EPL play direct at times. Its about being effective too.

Anonymous said...

the MG game should have been 2-0 champlins keeper had no control over the ball on the goal that got called back.. but MG's keeper was outstanding! maple grove played a good game up until 10 mins left when champlin came hard

Game report for Armstrong vs Wayzata or any other games?
I'm sick'n tired of hearing WB do this and do that.

Anonymous said...

SLP VS South

Refs were too big of an impact in this one and made about numerous bad calls both ways. Missed one PK of a guy that got clipped in the box. He called it obstruction and indirect. He called 2 more bad ones, one for each side, gave a red card and took it back. Game had no flow as he had to explain a call every 2 minutes. Unfortunate a game with 2 quality teams had to be played like that. Game winner was a free kick from 45 yards out, hit the post then the south goalie in the head or back and went in...weird game.

Anonymous said...

Money on EP to beat stuck-up Jags.

Anonymous said...

I didn't see the MG-CP game, but my guess is that a talented MG ouside defender/mid broke down a weak CP outside defender resulting in either a chance on goal, a quality cross, or a free kick/corner. That is MGs only way to score, and was CPs biggest weakness.

Anonymous said...

Jefferson is only team to beat Eden Prairie this year.
They shut them out 1-0 in Lake Conference play.
Can they shut them out again?

Anonymous said...

Ditto's on the above comments about Woodbury and Central. Woodbury had no place being the #2 seed, and most likely Central should have been #1. Same old same old. City schools get no respect. Everyone thinks only the burb schools have good teams because the city conference, in general, is not strong. But on this night, it just wasn't meant to be.

As previously posted, Central outshot Woodbury 18 to 4. If Woodbury thinks they are going to play a competitive game with Stillwater, they better pull a rabbit out of there hat (or somewhere) like they did against Central. They're going to need it.

Anonymous said...

What's score for Stillwater vs CDH game?

Anonymous said...

MG got no talented outside defender or midfielder. It's probably from bootball out of the back and forward beat last defender to the ball. MG game plan is similar to Jefferson, boot the crap out of the ball and pray.

Anonymous said...

I watched a section game yesterday that will go unnamed, but I wanted to mention how one sided the officiating was for the home team. Visting player was in box about to take shot and was leveled, center judge turned back on play so he didn't have to make call, this was a very obvious PK that should have been awarded, throughout game center judge hardly moved out of circle, made numerous bad calls.
How do officials get assigned to section games? This was a complete joke.

for class AA, WB is a lock, for A paul yonga is in both schools are still in playoffs - both players carrying their team furthest. to get Mr. soccer AA/A as a player, coaches are looking for the best all around player to carry their team during playoffs and it shows some player from bangu org thinks that playing for bangu should be enoguh for HS coaches to vote them in - you need to be all around and not just play weak teams and expect to win the award. if the coach is well connected then the coach will win but it affects the players in the long run. vote the real deal

Anonymous said...

MG score on outside defensive marking error, keeper stopped shot and but rebound went to MG player for the easy put in.

CP DOMINATED the remaining game. CP must have had 30 shots on goal to MG 4? Beside MG goal keeper playing out of his mind, MG also had a bit of luck. Baker hits the post, rebound goes to CP who sitting in front of the net, but shot goes wide.

CP forwards played like crap, the closer to the goal they got the more direct they played. AB played horrible, not sure why he's a regional player. Because he was playing so poorly he started behaving like a spoiled brat and went out on a red. Flipped off the ref, classless.

MG had more talent. CP basically, had one player controlling the field from CP goal line to about the 18 yard box.

Anonymous said...

Both talented teams in CP and MG i just think MG is more well-rounded. Although they played a little bit too conservative after they scored it seemed to have worked.

Playing Osseo next they are going to need to attack them instead of what they did the first game and sat 5 people at Defense. Osseo is probably the most skilled team in the state, MG has their hands full.

Deers staring at the headlights coming up Tuesday night...

Anonymous said...

Why are we (Bloomington Jefferson) stuck up? And how do we play more boot ball than 99% of other teams. We keep pretty good possession, especially for high school

Anonymous said...

Hard to say what will happen between Osseo and MG. Certainly you need to favor Osseo, but it might not be deer. A lot of teams tighten up in sections. A lot of teams learn from previous mistakes. I think Osseo will win, but they are not infallible, and MG got themselves to the section final. Tied SLP last weekend, also in a section final. They play the games for a reason.

MG sophomore keeper has skill to be all-state.

Anonymous said...

The vote was today for Mr Soccer and its announced at the Oct 19 State Banquet. Hopefully the people in that room that made the selection are not telling people that will post it on this site. That is not very professional.

Anonymous said...

I was in the room. Let's make it public - why hide it. hat is not professional is trying to keep a scecret when it should be public knowledghe.

Anonymous said...

in the world of internet, text messages, ipods, this news is already known. it is like a big secret and we should then wait? why?
have an election and don't tell the results...why don't we all move to cuba?

Anonymous said...

Then who is it?

Anonymous said...

Give us a hint?

Anonymous said...

If you were in the room then you know its meant to be announced at the banquet. The reason for this is to make it a special night at the banquet. Just like the All State players find out at the banquet. Its not meant to be public until the banquet. You have a professional responsibilty as a section rep to wait until the announcement is made at the banquet.

Anonymous said...

You need to think about your comment. "What is not professional is trying to keep a scecret when it should be public knowledge" You know if you are in the room that you are not supposed to say anything. That is a part of the banquet. People all find out at once and not leaked out on a blog. The Heisman Trophy voters vote and then the Downtown NY Athletic Club knows who won but they dont announce until the ceremony. The banquet is the ceremony. I know its not the Heisman Trophy, but its the a process to make it a big deal the night its announced.

Anonymous said...

OK, heisman, that;s a stretch...

Anonymous said...

I was in the room and I know a few people already leaked out since their conference didn't win.

Anonymous said...

Just because others leaked it out does not mean you should leak it out. Its meant to be an honor announced at a banquet. It has nothing to do with keeping a secret. You want it to be an event. Yes its not the Heisman but its the MN Coaches Association equivalent. Its the player of the year award. So please do not leak it out. Let the banquet be the vehicle for announcing the award.

Background checks couldn't nab this coach
By PAUL LEVY, Star Tribune

February 12, 2008

The teenage girl said she was "trapped for three years" in a prison of anger, "feeling terrified and ashamed." But she said nothing about the Elk River youth soccer coach, who is now charged with sexually assaulting her when she was 14.

Eric James Hawkins, a coach with no criminal background, had been banned by the Minnesota Youth Soccer Association (MYSA) at the time of the alleged assaults. But with no criminal history and without a requirement to list a suspension by the MYSA in a background check, there were no red flags for officials at two metro-area school districts where Hawkins worked as a coach in the past two years.

Background checks also would not have turned up a string of soccer-related lawsuits and interleague intrigue involving Hawkins, who authorities say changed his name years ago.

But a week after Hawkins, 44, appeared in Sherburne County District Court and the charges were reported in the national media, officials in the Rockford and Robbinsdale school districts, who had run background checks on the coach, were stunned.

"We did a thorough background check," said Michael Smith, superintendent of the Rockford School District, where Hawkins coached the boys' soccer team last fall. Smith said Hawkins will no longer coach at Rockford High School. The school district on Monday sent letters to families of the high school boys' soccer team, alerting them to Hawkins' status.

Hawkins' Minneapolis attorney, Mark Jason Miller, said Tuesday he welcomes the opportunity to show that "all these allegations are not true." He noted that even after Hawkins was charged on Nov. 21, he was allowed to leave Minnesota to work in South Carolina. Hawkins continues to hold residence in Elk River, as he has in the past when he has worked in other states for months at a time, Miller said.

At Robbinsdale Cooper High School, Hawkins was a volunteer assistant boys soccer coach two years ago. "He was a volunteer, but he did go through our whole system of checks," said John Oelfke, activities director at the high school. "I just don't know how you can predict these kinds of actions with nothing in the background."

And when TestQuest, a Chanhassen technology company, used a recruiting service to hire Hawkins in November 2006 as a network architect engineer, "the usual background checks were done and there were no issues with him," said Sarat Kakumanu, Hawkins' supervisor until Hawkins left the company in November.

Critics and friends agree Hawkins is a husband and father of three who knows and loves soccer, a man Kakumanu said was "a pretty good guy ... who worked well with people." Parents whose children played for Hawkins -- including the father of the victim in the sexual-assault case -- said Hawkins went out of his way to look after children, sometimes taking them out to restaurants after practices and games.

Quarrels with youth league

Hawkins' attorney Miller alluded Tuesday to "territory battles" between Minnesota soccer associations and said he hoped the "real story" eventually is told.

Soccer-related lawsuits, filed on behalf and against Hawkins, include a defamation suit in which he agreed in Hennepin County District Court in 2006 to pay $220,000 as part of a settlement to the MYSA. Hawkins was one of a half-dozen people to circulate e-mail defaming MYSA officials and the association, said MYSA executive director Candace Daley.

In late 2002, MYSA issued a four-year suspension to Hawkins for sideline behavior that included "inappropriate language" and "taunting."

But, according to court documents, Hawkins was seen carrying a whistle, wearing coaching apparel and giving direction to soccer players at Rogers High School three times in April 2004 by private investigator Grant E. Beise. Beise, a former FBI agent, was hired by the MYSA-affiliated Three Rivers Soccer Association to see whether Hawkins was coaching after the suspension.

Even if Rockford and Cooper high school officials had been aware of his MYSA suspension, Hawkins could still coach teams under the umbrellas of other youth associations, or high school teams.

Hawkins had no criminal record in Minnesota or in Texas, where he was also known as Eric J. Woodard, Texas authorities said Tuesday.

The allegations

On July 9, 2006, after a young girl was invited to a sleepover at Hawkins' Elk River home, the girl's older sister had an emotional breakdown that landed her, hours later, in the teen-psychiatric unit at University of Minnesota Medical Center, Fairview, in Minneapolis, her father told the Star Tribune.

"The thought of my sister staying overnight at his house pushed me over the edge," the girl, now 17, told the Star Tribune on Monday, as her father listened to her be interviewed. The Star Tribune, by policy, does not reveal the identity of sexual assault victims.

For three years, the girl was like a simmering pot about to boil, her father said. Her anger would turn to frustration and then talk of cutting herself, the father said.

During her five days at Fairview, where she was diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder, her secret came out.

"I felt like a totally new person," she said. "Do you know what it's like to hide your real feelings for three years?"

She did not meet with authorities until speaking to Elk River Police Investigator Eric Balabon on Jan. 22, 2007 -- six months after her trip to the hospital. "I was afraid," she said.

According to court documents: In the winter of 2004-05, Hawkins, a longtime family friend, was taking the girl to a soccer clinic in Plymouth when he pulled over on a road unfamiliar to the girl. Hawkins insisted that the girl remove her shirt and bra, then told her she needed to remove her pants. Hawkins then touched the girl, even though she asked him to stop. He then threw $25 at her, court records say.

In the fall of 2005, Hawkins was driving the girl to a soccer game when he pulled his car over, unbuttoned his pants and exposed himself to her, court records state. Hawkins then forced the girl to touch him. She pulled away, telling him it was "gross."

Hawkins is next scheduled to appear in Sherburne County court April 4. At a hearing in Elk River last Wednesday, Hawkins declined to acknowledge questions asked by a reporter.

From MYSA summer to fall HS.
They all go together with these psychopaths.

What games are being played tonight?

Anonymous said...

Who are the All-State quality players in the Jefferson at Eden Prairie game tonight?

This should be the best match of the season. I expect the winner to meet Osseo in the final.

Anonymous said...

If Osseo can play through all its issues - Sounds like from reading this blog - they have a lot -

Anonymous said...

Any team is beatable tonight - Everyone needs to show up to play - The team that does will be the one to win - Good Luck to all -

Trojans will pluck some feathers tonight.

10:29 Can you name all issues that Osseo is having? I bet you couldn't name anything new that's not going through any other big schools. You know the saying with bad apple.

Elk River had Eric Hawkins and that dude was one crazy MF. He couldn't even play in the mens league I tell you.

For those of us that truely do NOT CARE about the trash that goes on off the field. Let's get back to the discussion of soccer. Here are my predictions.

Wayzata 1
SLP 0

Lakeville 2
Rochester 1

Wilmar 1
Mankato East 0

AV 3
Eastview 1

Stillwater 3
Cretin 0

Maplegrove 1
Osseo 0

Coon Rapids 2
Anoka 0

ER 1
Moorhead 0

Brainerd 2
St. Cloud Tech 1

Mostly I'm going with coaches who have the experience to get their teams to the Dome. With a couple of expections for no reason other than wanting to see the little guy win.

wheres the jefferson EP game? --MG beating OSSEO ... I like that one ha

Anonymous said...

Again, MG coach has brought his team to the state tournament 2 years in a row. I went with coaches experience.

The Jefferson vs EP game is a bit harder to determine, as both coaches have experience with the State Tournament. Right now, I'd have to give the edge to jefferson.

yeah, i know where your coming from.

Eden Prairie at 6...go Jags!

Anonymous said...

What happened to Me Xman? Did his team get knocked out (Hopkins) or is he too consumed with all of the playoff excitement?

I'm missing his predictions.

I too want to cheer for Maple Grove - they are they are not the favorites but agree that the coaches must know what they are doing - I think Osseo will score though - It might go to PK's then I have to give it to the soph more keeper at Maple Grove

GO MG!! All Day BABY!!

Anonymous said...

How bad is single A? Wow!

Anonymous said...

MG is beating Osseo 1 - 0...

Anonymous said...

How about EP v BJ game? It must be over.

Anonymous said...

St Louis Park beats Wayzata 3-1

Anonymous said...

Awesome!!! Go SLP!!!

Anonymous said...

"Single A is so bad that Rogers a number 5 seed in Section 5 played Osseo the great and mighty to a 3-2 match that was very competitive, they almost pulled an upset. Anoka was not able to beat Monticello a number 3 seed. Rogers Beat Champlin Park 2-1. After the first 4-5 in AA, the difference between good teams in A and AA is nothing.

Wrong...Single A is soooo bad!

Jefferson wins in PK's

Anonymous said...

Osseo wins it 2 - 1...

Lakeville North wins 2 - 0 over Rochester Century.

Any updates on the A.V. Eastview game?

Anonymous said...

as stated in my first blog of the year, EP would not get to state because of weak goaltending. that came to fruition as EP blows 2-0 halftime lead and Jefferson goalie makes several great saves in the last 10 minutes and OT. win 5-4 in shootout.

Love it! WH is a tool!

Thanks 9:12 EP hockey dad, who's son was left on JV this year. It is goalKEEPING, not tending.

Jefferson beats Eden Prairie in a one of the most exciting games i have watch in my entire life. The Jaguars fall down 2 to 0 at half time because of poor marking but the coach got them fired up in the second half and they scored a goal fairly quick after and the 2nd was shortly after that one. Regulation was very even but over time was totally dominated by the eagles and we so unlucky they did not put a goal in but great goal keeping and luck brought the Jags into a shoot out. And its all history now. 5 to 3 Jefferson is going to state. Great season EP!

Wayzata caught some real unfortunate luck tonight. They had an own goal that made it 2-1 SLP. Then minutes later tied it up 2-2 on a header off a corner. Head ref called it a goal and the sideline judge called goalie interference (which it looked like to me the player just beat the goalie to the ball). After that it really killed the momentum and the whole complexion of the game for Wayzata. Terrible to have a sideline ref decide the game on what was clearly something he shouldnt have been making the ruling on. Feel bad for the guys at Wayzata who just kind of deflated after it was disallowed.

Osseo won but did WB score? Is osseo one-man team with WB?

Anonymous said...

Coon Rapids 5, Anoka 1

Top 4 seeds at State:

1. Apple Valley
2. Osseo
3. Coon Rapids
4. St. Louis Park

Anonymous said...

1. AV
2. Osseo
3. Jefferson
4. Coon Rapids

SLP should thanks their goalie... he save them in all their three section games, mainly against South.. South had alots of chances but the goalie didn't allowed any!

Jags came through again.

State Seeds
Apple Valley
Osseo
Jefferson
Coon Rapids

just my predictions, you have to look at strength of schedule and not just record. Jefferson for example is 2-0-1 against the top two ranked teams in the state. St Louis Park has not played any top 10 teams.
