With the February State Cup meeting coming around, its time to create a post about MN State Cup. Should be an interesting tournament with some of the team and player movement and all of the hard work put in by players so far this winter.
Tomass, typical SSM parent, they think the work of soccer now revolves around that program. Although I will disagree with you on one point, SSM should be at there best, they have been training 5-6 times a week since September, the rest of MN teams are working towards MRL and State Cup for SSM every game is must win, if they don't they won't be able to recruit players to their program.
this is an important point - while most MN teams are "deprogramming" from High School and in the earliest of preseason development - SSM has been at it 5 or 6 days a week for months now. while I agree with your assessment generally about how games don't mean much right now, you can't argue SSM shouldn't be at the top of their game.
then again, someone like me would argue they are NEVER at the top of their game because you can't have a 9 month performance cycle. There isn't a pro or developmental league in the world that does it, so then why does SSM think its good for kids?
even the marathon of the EPL pails in comparison to the SSM never-ending season.
anon645 & 712 - We don't disagree. I also think SSM should be much further ahead of the curve at this point. If I was vague, I apologize. My comments were directed specifically at MYSA premier teams at the older age levels.
I don't know how the EPL players, in the top of the league, play all those extra games along with games for their national squads. It has to be the longest season and training regiment. Baseball doesn't count- too much standing around ;-)
Bangu 1-1 Shattuck U17 boys...Shattuck hammered Bangu in the first half but gave up a bad goal. Tides turned in half two but no one was able to score. Shattuck had a few chances turned away in the final minute by strong goalkeeping. Good match for each team.
Holker is the Bangu 17s coach. He has done a great job with the Augsburg squad. He also built the Bangu 19s who are an outstanding team (and are rumored to be joining forces with the Wings, or vice versa? for state cup this year.) Holker will prepare his team for college soccer and obviously for State Cup as well. It doesn't matter if it is D1, D2 or D3, he will help them prepare, which is part of Bangu's philosophy.
I think the EP and CDA teams will also be very good this year. Both have strong coaches and a core of good players Although I'm not sure if GP is coaching the CDA squad?
I think Bangu, CDA and EP are defintaly on a different level than the rest of the 17s. If history shows anything, Bangu should win state cup again...but I guess we'll have to wait and see how they all play.
Recently saw some U17G games at showcases/tournaments. As usual Stars looked good. Very impressed by size, strength and development of Woodbury! Wings aren't in shape yet. Surprised by Select. Had some great games and then played inconsistently. Finals prediction: Stars over WDBY 1-0
Valley United's U16 premier team played SSM's U16's and only loss 2-1 according to the SSM website. They should have a solid team to compete in State Cup this year.
Wings U17 Boys lost most of their starting best players. 3 to Bangu, 4 to Champlin/Dayton, 1 to AFC-SE, and 2 just quit. They have little left to sustain themselves anywhere, let alone State Cup. U17 Prediction - Champlin/Dayton will face Bangu and lose.
gradually bangu and ssm are starting to compete against each other and reflect what i said year ago , better than traveling outstate to play good competition, ssm got own dome and fields bangu numbers and depth, like to see more games between two, great for parents, players, in the long run gradually even opponents will see the development merits if stop with the bragging rights. thanks Mr Holker for stepping forward.
I like to see the expression on self centered Rory Dames, Eclipse of Illinois face if impossible OCCURRED SSM AND Bangu merged INTO THUNDER COALITION AND NSC got its fields and act together and with help of corporate connections , sponsors some topflight college showcases... laughter... never going to happen . The advantages Illinois has had would disappear along with their best players and other top players from midwest having option to come here.
irt the meaningless games. I agree w/Tomass. Coaches use regular games to look at players in different positions, give others a look who have improved or have been training especially hard. Others may be injured or sick or unavailable. That is the point of ''friendly games". Now to win in a tournament when teams are playing for something. Then it means something.
irt the meaningless games. I agree w/Tomass. Coaches use regular games to look at players in different positions, give others a look who have improved or have been training especially hard. Since this is the State Cup topic page, I'm going to throw in a post about the FA cup since it provides some of the same thrills and thoughts that "better" squad doesn't always win.
Anyone catch the Liverpool vs. Barnsley 3rd round FA cup match? WOW! Liverpool has always been my EP favorite, but it was wonderful well fought game that Liverpool could have, should, have, but didn't win. The Tykes from Barnsley scored in stoppage time to win.
It was a great match to watch. Hopefully we will have some thrillers like that this year at State Cup
I saw the game. It was very exciting...I still don't know how Barnsley pulled it off. I have always liked Liverpool as well, but have a lower division team advance is what makes the tournament so exciting!
Those games were interesting in that Bangu definitely controlled the tempo of both games against the Nebraska and Iowa state champs, much like SSM controlled the tempo against Bangu. I think that the talent is there, just the technique and fitness aren't up to SSMs level. 'Course they practice a lot more.
anon 8:11, If I was SSM and had recruited players from all over North America and just won a match by 1 goal over a bunch of Minnesota kids who haven't had the number of training days this year as the SSM side I'd be embarrassed by that result. SSM can call it a moral victory if they choose.
What happened to "these friendlies are meaningless"......"they give coaches a chance to play players in different positions".....blah, blah, blah.
I guess that only applies to teams other than SSM? Don't you think the older teams at SSM are in a training cycle as well? Don't you think these coaches know how to peak a team at the right time? Hypocrites, each and every one of you.
Let's see what happens come State Cup time (when the games really matter), then we'll see what kind of excuses you have then. Crybabies.
Could it also be that the u-17 boys bangu team is good? From what i've been reading they have been giving teams all over the country a run for their money. This game against SSM was actually their only loss so far.
anon 10:12, If SSM boys and girls teams don't win all the Minnesota State Cup titles in age groups they enter they ought to be totally ashamed and re-evaluate their program. They recruit from coast to coast, border to border as well as internationally. If they can't beat Minnesota teams who select their players from a population base for all practical purposes of about of about 3 million in the Twin Cities metro when SSM recruits from over 300 million there is something markedly wrong with the program or coaching. Just imagine the quality of teams Blackhawks, Wings, SCV or Bangu could field if they offered $35K scholarships. No crying here just a little reality check and a few facts.
Why dont you ask Notre Dame, Princeton, Pitt, UCLA, Harvard, Santa Clara, Vanderbilt, James Madison and the likes? Its funny, coach Waldrum, that is the HC for Notre Dame women is recommending players to look into Shattuck..35k, LOL!!
Oh, and by the way, the 17s at SSM, the better 17s are on the 18s squad. Why dont you stop making State of the Union addresses after each match without much fact.
anon 1:25, If the parents of the kids paying $35K for tuition at this glorified HS saved that money they would be able to afford to go to any college of their choice and not be restricted to only the ones recruiting them for soccer. Who in their right mind would waste $35K on HS and give up those 4 extremely formative years of being involved daily in their kid's life???
Bottom line - I was at the SSM vs. Bangu game, and both teams are very good. SSM had the run of play for more than 50% of the match and were a bit cleaner on the ball (expected). They had a few of the 18's players that are 17 age eligible playing - and these guys were difference makers. This is a very good program. The kids are getting what they pay for. The Bangu team is also very good - they are creative, attractive to watch and show good courage...not scared of taking risks...and that makes them very fun to watch. I hope these two can play again.
As anon at 11:11 posted it must be extremely frustrating for SSM coaches who have recruited all across the nation and Canada to barely eke out a win against a bunch of kids from a state that has struggled achieving success in soccer such as Minnesota. If I was a parent paying $30K+ to be a part of this I'd be thinking of better ways to spend my money.
How about we wait until some "real, meaningful" games are played and then see what the results are.
Also, IF anyone is paying $30k +(which I don't believe they are)... they aren't paying for wins. They are paying to have thier child trained in a better environment than possible wherever they are from. Not to mention, an academic situation which will place them well ahead of thier college-bound peers.
Alright here's the deal post 8:42. Look at all the Bangu players-how many will play division 1, maybe 5-8 max..now look at the u-17 shattuck boys..EVERY SINGLE PLAYER ON THE U-17 BOYS WILL PLAY DIVISION 1, AND PLAY AT A HIGH LEVEL TOO! The talent level at Shattuck is extremely higher than that of Bangu's overall player talent . Also, this is the first year these U-17 Shattuck Boys have played together. It's hard to get team chemistry by just having 5 months of playing together. Oh and by the way, only two of the players from the u-18 Shattuck Boys who are actually juniors played down for the 17's. Neither of them started, and both only played around 20 minutes.
This is also the first year that the Bangu players have played together, except what, 4-5 players? Plus a new coach. And they have had maybe a handful of practices where everyone is there. You can say what you want about the Shattuck team, but I would be proud of the MN Bangu team for achieving at such a high level despite overwhelming odds. Given, Shattuck has some excellent teams, talent and training, but so do other teams in MN.
noalot please tell me you are joking - "It's hard to get team chemistry by just having 5 months of playing together." Your trying to tell use that a team need more than 5 months of playing of playing nearly everyday to have chemistry. Most coaches (including myself) would love this situation and should have "team chemistry" in 3-4 weeks. Sounds like a poor excuse.
It's obvious the SSM folks are trying to convince themselves that their program is worth the expense.
Barely beating a team of kids from Minnesota and tying the EP community club after recruiting from the entire USA and Canada is a slap in the face to the SSM elites.
If they have that much D1 talent they should be pounding these Minnesota teams by 5-0 or higher scores.
Guess the coaching and training all these D1 kids are receiving is well below what the Minnesota boys get with their MYSA clubs.
That must be the reason the Minnesota kids can compete with all that D1 talent.
anon 7:25, LOL at your post. That must be it! With all the SSM kids talented enough to go D1 but they tie and barely beat a couple of MYSA teams there must be problems with the training and coaching they get down in Faribault. Surely all that D1 talent should be destroying these teams who only have kids from Minnesota on their rosters. And just think, the SSM families are paying $35,000 a year for inferior coaching and training! LOL
State of the Union Address after each game. They even try to make excuses for these games. Its almost embarrassing. Who cares who won and lost, who cares on who played who and when. Give it a rest Daddy. 10 players here, no subs there, one player had the wrong color socks on, come on Daddy's, give it a break. Just let the kids play.
Edina boys u-17 premiere will win state cup hands down. The team is lead by speedy forward sam lantz and the brick wall christian rans. It will be impossible for anyone to get by this team.
I also agree with anon 10:57 post. Edina is stacked with players such as sam lantz, nick jaramillo, the gitzie twins (spelling), christian rans aka the brick wall, benner the goalie etc... this team is the team to beat..I hear sir alex ferguson has talked to a few of them as well....WATCH OUT!
They are all highly recruited future D1 or USMNT players. They have been club jumping for years. SSM and Bangu both wanted them to play for them but the scholarships weren't big enough. I also hear that Jose Mourinho is trying to form a new MLS team and these guys are the "core". They should dominate the State Cup.
The Shattuck 17s are not a great team. Additionally, their coach has a consistent record of under achievement.
Also the top 16s and 17s play on the 18s team. One may occasionally play down at their age, but Tim Carter is correct to play them at the highest level where they can contribute.
While Edina was competative in Premier last year adding a couple of players, which every team above them also did, will probably not make them a favorite for state cup. BNG, EDP and CDA are all very good teams. I can't see how any of the don't make the semis. That means 1 spot for the best of the rest teams to fight for, including KIK, SCV, WNG and EDI.
Bangu and Wings boys are combining to play State Cup at U19. My son was invited to play with this group. It sounds like the nucleus of the team will be last years Bangu U18 State Cup team.
ok college coach, ROFLMAO - 92 best player my hats to you for mising the call big time. let's write dwon the names of s-sm players and call them best. I guess if you go to s-sm then you must be tops.
Anon 1027-- they aren't looking for "middle of the road" players at SSM. If you are there (especially on the boys' side) then there has to be some upside to you.
Don't know who collegecoach is, but he just gave his opinion. Instead of poking a stick at him... give us your thoughts/names. Typical anon response-- bitch but make no effort to give intelligent discourse.
it is very obivous what kind of person is collegecoach. if a college coach is so gung ho about the top players in the state, should they be calling the coaches and finidn out the answer? why come here and make a ridiculous statemnent and have tomass and other riled up looking for other reaction. pick up the phone and call the butcher if you want to know what good steak is. collegecoach should be telling us the tops players in college not in traveling. I find it offesnive and shows no respect for those in the know. this is anon because I am not too excited about finding top players in youth level whern they can't even read the game. let them have fun and enjoy their friends.
Well, there you have it, Bangu Blue v Shattuck. Odds were Shattuck v Blue would play in the first stages since Shattuck has never played. Should be a good game.
Well I do appreciate the fact that Tom M. has worked hard to keep the prom conflicts down to a minimum.
There goes another annual debate down the drain.
Our blog world continues to shrink. Must be global warming or cooling, depends if you lean left or right; I guess, or maybe on how the wind is blowing.
no surprise the blog world continues to shrink. same old subjects beaten to death (ODP, SSM, SE's, NSR, BNG, etc..) with the same arguments by the same people. hopefully as the outdoor season kicks in things will be more intersting.

No team is near their peak at this point and are just starting to climb to reach the peak by MRL and state cup.
Beat SSM when it means something..yep that would be great. Now, nope, no big deal.
Don't understand your hypocritical statement?

that is correct, gavin is not coaching CDA anymore, Pepe Jon Chavez took his position, this may be a good change for CDA, giving them more discipline
U18 Valley has a big week comin up with games against lakeville, shattuck and their mens league. much will be seen about this team after this week

Weekend's SSM U17 boys adidas Invitational Results:
Bangu 0-1 SSM
Bangu 3-2 Des Moines Menace
SSM 5-0 Arsenal (NE)
Bangu 1-0 Arsenal (NE)
SSM were clearly the best - however Bangu beat two State Champions...
Arsenal Menace 2-2

I think that the talent is there, just the technique and fitness aren't up to SSMs level. 'Course they practice a lot more.
Who played for SSM? Was this their U18 team including Bunbury and his mates?
this was the SSM u-17, NOT the u-18 team
So the SSM U-17 with recruits from coast to coast and also from Canada only beat the Bangu kids by 1-0 score?
Yep.
So, I guess we can call that a moral victory?
they tied another MN team a couple weeks ago 3-3 but I forget who
anon 8:11,

Also the top 16s and 17s play on the 18s team. One may occasionally play down at their age, but Tim Carter is correct to play them at the highest level where they can contribute.
While Edina was competative in Premier last year adding a couple of players, which every team above them also did, will probably not make them a favorite for state cup. BNG, EDP and CDA are all very good teams. I can't see how any of the don't make the semis. That means 1 spot for the best of the rest teams to fight for, including KIK, SCV, WNG and EDI.
bangu will get demolished by the edina buzz watch out for the brick wall
nick jaramillo has recently been practicing with the panamanian national team..this kid is the real deal!
I heard a 2nd source today mention that Bangu and Wings are collaborating on a U19 Boys State Cup team. Has anyone else heard the same?
anon 8:53,
Is this the same brick wall that allowed 21 goals in the premier league last summer?
Bangu and Wings boys are combining to play State Cup at U19. My son was invited to play with this group. It sounds like the nucleus of the team will be last years Bangu U18 State Cup team.
he just wasnt feeling last summer league but hes into it this year
WINGS U17 BOYS-WILL DOMINATE STATE CUP!
Let's get a list of the top 18 players for the 90s, 91s, and 92s.
I'll say number the best player for all age groups.
90: Chris Sutton-Region II ODP player, will play for Notre Dame next year
91: Keegan Gunderson, National ODP, being recruited by top 5 Division I schools
92: Patrick(Dekonte) Donyen, regional and national ODP
Hey "college coach". I thought that Chris Sutton was an 89.
WOW- I can't believe I just made that mistake. My mistake!
90: Teal Bunbury, Canadian National Team, Region II ODP, will play for #16 Akron next year
test
college coach, now for the girls side?
ok college coach, ROFLMAO - 92 best player my hats to you for mising the call big time. let's write dwon the names of s-sm players and call them best.
LOL - but of course, what else do you expect from an anon?
it is very obivous what kind of person is collegecoach. if a college coach is so gung ho about the top players in the state, should they be calling the coaches and finidn out the answer? why come here and make a ridiculous statemnent and have tomass and other riled up looking for other reaction. pick up the phone and call the butcher if you want to know what good steak is. collegecoach should be telling us the tops players in college not in traveling. I find it offesnive and shows no respect for those in the know. this is anon because I am not too excited about finding top players in youth level whern they can't even read the game. let them have fun and enjoy their friends.
Any news from yesterday's draw?
U18 Girls, 4 teams
Semi-
Bangu Blue vs Shattuck
Bangu White vs North Metro
Both teams in the final will attend
USYSA Regionals.
Must be global warming or cooling, depends if you lean left or right; I guess, or maybe on how the wind is blowing.
that was me....hmmmmm must be the liberals having a primary and caucus all in the same day
;-)
531 so are you saying that either Bangu White or North Metro are going to regionals?
thats the way Im reading it?? Shattuck beat White a few weeks ago 5-0.
no surprise the blog world continues to shrink. same old subjects beaten to death (ODP, SSM, SE's, NSR, BNG, etc..) with the same arguments by the same people. hopefully as the outdoor season kicks in things will be more intersting.
Does anyone know when MYSA will post the state cup schedule. Wasn't the draw supposed to take place on Saturday?
