AA darkhorse: Miles Colago of Anoka. The kid is all-around awesome. Any team would be better with him. Not flashy, but he is awfully smart on the ball.
wait is that m hutton or both huttons?
I saw him in the Anoka Vs CP game, wasn't impressed. Especially in the second half I thought CP midfield controlled the game. But he's put the ball in the goal lots of times.
I'm going with Hutton, I haven't seen any of the other play HS and am only basing my opinion on summer play.
Anon 6:35 - Basing your opinion on summer play? Both twins get benched cause they will only pass to each other. Neither is a top 5 player on their summer team.
well hopefully u dont support miles colago of Anoka winning it then. his summer team got handled most of the time in premier
Hutton will win "AA" Mr Soccer and Keido Pour should be a lock for "A".
Take it to the bank.
Well, there it is. I was wondering how many people have actually seen these kids play. Basing your vote on summer play is a joke. Summer and Fall soccer play is quite different if you ask me. I love them both, but it's like comparing World Cup with League soccer. Some players play well in one, but not another.
Anon 10:54, a friendly reminder to be a bit more careful on your facts. I coached the Bangu team the Huttons played on the last 2 years. They have never been "benched", they are consummate team players and don't only look for each other. As a coach I don't rank players 1-18 but since you brought it up, they were both top 5 players on that team.
i played them this year and they were the two best players bangu has got
ata boy aj!
This Anon 6:35
in re-reading my post, I was saying Miles Colago wasn't what I considered a dark horse for anything. That was based on the Anoka vs CP game. It was on local cable TV. IMHO CP big midfielder in the second half dominated the mid field and stopped MC. He had an absolutely amazing open field steal that was just plain cool. If CP had someone who could finish a ball I doubt the game would have ended up in a tie. Anoka need to take care of the ball, and just did not. My opinion was based on summer play regarding Hutton which is why I qualified it. But I would I would find it difficult to see them playing badly in any situation. Also, I did see them play in last years State Championship and yes, they played good there too.
Is summer play and HS play different. yeah, and your point is we don't get to see hmm... 500 or so games that go on thru out the state during the fall?
Any comment about the Hutton only playing the bench for Bangu is just stupid, and I believe AJ more an answered that comment.
Interstingly, the only 1 AA player with both pedigree (club soccer, ODP) and strong HS career performance is Colin Monastario. Although Hutton has not had great success, if any, with ODP and he is on a good club team, his senior year HS performance has been outstanding (though his prior HS years have been OK.)
In prior years, the coaches had to decide between at least 4 or 5 players that had club, ODP, and HS career success and an outstanding senior year.
I think this year will go to Hutton as Mr. Soccer is a senior year HS award, not a life time achievement award. Of course, he has to be named the top player in the conference first to even be nominated.
I agree with previous posters that single A should be hands down to Poure.
when do the awards come out?
not any success with ODP? his 1st year he tried out for ODP he only went to one tryout and then this last year he made it to the camp, made the region pool game, scored in that game, and made the region pool...i think that is success in ODP, not many people from mn make the region pool
so what about goalies? are the stats true about the top goalies? are they that good or is it luck....for example mike sikich from av?? fewest goals in the state
The goalies are tricky. Some are so well defended, their stats are misleading.
The All-State team has been decided--they probably won't publish it for a while. The coaches from each section meet and nominate players (this happens at the section seed meeting). Then they vote. If you haven't played other teams in your section, it comes down to stats and reputation.
It seems that the play-offs should play a part in this selection, but that's the way it goes! Play-off soccer is a whole different beast, and some kids will get the award even though they don't perform under October pressure. Kind of like choosing the MLB MVP in September.
KP is the best player in the state.
"A" or "AA"...he's hands down the best player and will win Mr. Soccer in class "A".
I think Hutton deserves the "AA" Mr. Soccer based on individual and team success.
Even though Monasterio and Vint don't have huge stats they are carrying their Team to the Section Final. Both are quality players that have helped to build a 14-1-3 record this year with a tough schedule. They deserve at least a look.
a player must be named the best player in his respective league to be considered for the mr. soccer award.
the award is given at the sunday night banquet before the state tournament begins.
I think Monastario has been in the region pool and traveled all over with the Region 2 team for 5 years. 1 year of regional pool doesn't come close. But this is not an ODP award.
I agree that Vint and Monestario deserve a look. Especially Vint as the team goes as he goes. I think the fact thay Wayzata players received the award 2 times in the prior 4 years (Vint and Keller) will hurt the Wayzata boys.
Hutton's team success last year, this year and his leadership and individual stats this year should make him the favorite.
I think the only thing that could hurt KP is that his transfer to a small private school, with a full scholarship, could be viewed as a bit dubious.
Although the Huttons are both very good players I think that it Mr. Soccer should be given to a pure soccer player a.k.a. Monestario. The Huttons dive to draw fouls whenever they are losing, tied, or only a goal or two up and therefore dont deserve an honor such as Mr. Soccer.
If Monasterio and Vint were as good this fall as is being suggested they would be putting more points up on the board. Don't get me wrong as they're both fine players worthy of All-State honors but they haven't had the dynamic impact on their teams as the twins have had at AV.
Apple Valley has played every bit as strong of competition as Wayzata and the Huttons are putting up big time numbers.
If Hutton doesn't get Mr. Soccer then you know it's all about politics.
a game between the huttons of AV and the wayzata boys would be a terrific game...then we could make some judgement about them
When are they gonna announce all-state?
All-State gets announced at the State banquet on Sunday, Oct. 21st I believe for the coaches one. Doesn't anyone recall when the papers put there's out usually? I believe thats before state but am not positive.
The AV twins and Montaserio and Vint are different style of players. They are explosive and can break the game wide open at any time which they've demonstrated so many times this year.
The Hutton are attackers with track star speed and that "knack for the goal". They are explosive and can break the game wide open at any time which they've demonstrated so many times this year while Montaserio and Vint are more technical and possession type players.
It would be fun to see them on the same club team in the summer.
mr soccer isnt all about stats. The Hutton twins put up big numbers, but Monasterio controls and dominates the midfield. he is a huge part to a very good wayzata team.
Mr. Soccer isn't all about stats? Abe Gibbons anyone?
I think Gibbons had something like 20 goals and 25 assists, which is obviously pretty good. I don't think he lead the state but he was in the top 5 (I think.)
However, your point is a valid one...his dominante, game controlling, center-midfield play got him my vote and I would bet won him the award just as much as his stats.
Hutton is a U18 and Monasterio is a U19, not much chance of them playing on the same club team.
i was saying that Gibbons wasnt as good as the stats he put up. He played in the city league where half the kids are C3-type players. its no competition. if u are above average u will look like a star in that league
Huttons are actually U17's they did play for Bangu U16 last year, they could be Juniors this year if they wanted.
They're in the 1990 age group so I don't think so.
They are indeed U17 eligible this year and i believe have September birthdays they recently turned 17.
Monasterio is a U19 and still in HS?
Gibbon's hater: did you see him play last year? The kid was a machine. Everytime he got the ball an opposing team would tense up.
Colin Monasterio turned 18 july 2007 and he has been in the odp 1989 region pool for the past 4 years and made the region 2 team this year.He participated in Chula vista ODP region event this january and selected to go to Costa Rica this February.By the way, he will be a nineteen year old freshman playing for the Wisconsin Badgers next year after being heavily recruited by Northwestern,Colgate,Ohio State, Xavier,Loyola and U of W Milwaukee.
Dark horse Mr Soccer from the NW conference should be David Scheller from Maple Grove. Miles Colago is a good player in a mediocre conference but Anoka has not shown it can compete or beat a ranked team.David Scheller is the heart and soul of the MG team and when the ball is going through him, he is a delight to watch.
Monasterio is a nice player and has the ability to do well at D1 level.
Hopefully he fares better than a couple of our recent Mr. Soccers, Keller and Witchger.
Scheller is fantastic - but likley not Mr. Soccer material. He is not a Div. I player, but will be dominant if he lands in the MIAC. Rumor has it he is interested in Augsburg???
Scheller as Mr Soccer? Not gonna happen. As all-metro? Probably should happen. He does have some real skills, as teams are finding out. Has carried an team that shouldn't be in a section final.
Keller is a clown--that is his main problem. Doesn't have the head for things.
And which players, from either city conference, looked like a star this year?
wait a second...monestario dominates the middle no doubt so that wayzata plays good games but the huttons control the middle pretty well too. maybe not quite as good but they put up stats to bury teams...not just make it so other teams cant touch the ball. thats why wayzata doesnt blow out teams
Wayzata is not that deep. AV has a more athletic group. Monasterio is more tech. skilled, Huttons are solid and aggressive--more comparable to Vint. Wayzata will have a tough time with a very balanced SLP team tomorrow.
I haven't heard about any city players this year--Southwest had another strong season, but that's all I know.
If you want to talk about weak conferences, just look at any/all schools with a bunch of single A teams, not specificall MSP/STP teams. Single A HS soccer, outside of 4 or 5 pretty good teams, is C3 soccer. Also, no players choose which conference they play in. If you look at all the stats leaders over the years, they tend to come from either single A or from AA teams that play a bunch of A teams in conference. Exception is probably Goeffrey Meyers from Armstrong a number of years back.
I saw Wayzata play 3 times this year and I would agree that they are beatable. If you drop Montestario or Vint off their team, they probably loose 2 or 3 more games, tie more games and loose their first section game. I think the SLP game will be a very good one. Could come down to a shoot out, but I hope is doesn't. I will give SLP the edge because of coaching.
For Mr. Soccer, I'll guess Hutton and Poure.
I think Wayzata will drop off significantly next year as they really don't have any standout players coming up in the ranks.
Dula Fadis from Mpls South is an excellent player. I think the best I saw from this years Mpls league.
South had a big drop off in talent with last years senior class being outstanding but this young man is an exceptional talent.
Sam Hyneh from south is the real deal as well.
in regards to gibbons hater earlier...so with 2 stars at south + 12 seniors + an upgrade at coach... how did they do so poorly out of conference? and loose 2 and tie 1 in confernce this year?
who were the other finalists last year along with gibbons?
It is a known fact that Greg Rosenthal would have been a runaway choice last year for Mr soccer had he not been hurt all year.Abe only had to beat his twin brother since both benefited from having to play teams that gave up 100 goals. Both have not seen a second in U of W Milwaukee while Greg is playing 90 minutes.Ouch, truth hurts!
Do you ever wonder how both Huttons have almost 140 shots between them for the season. The entire AV team had 340 shots to date while Mike H has 105 by himself.Do they know soccer is a team sport?
I like the Hutton boys for Mr. Soccer. The honor should go to boys that are good all around kids, both on and off the field, as well as great team players.
Mike Hutton has so many shots because he plays selfish on many plays. He could have good numbers on both assists and goals but doesn't like to give the ball up. Wherever he thinks he is playing college soccer he won't be seeing the field much if he keeps that up, plus he just isn't physically strong enough or big enough.
anon 919 and 1020 - top strikers want the ball, top strikers are selfish, top strikers want to score goals, top strikers will shoot whenever they can in the attempt to score goals. The more they shoot the more goals they score. The more goals they score the better opportunity their team has of winning. Every position on the field in this team sport has certain responsibilities. It sounds like hutton is filling his role to the team.
A balance will be taught very quickly through play at the higher levels but there is nothing wrong with perfecting the scoring element here at HS.
You have aptly described the true meaning of a gifted striker. Teal Bunbury or Kp Poure know how to score and dish the ball and will transition to college ball easily.Hence, both are members of the 1990 ODP REGION 2 TEAM.
A true gifted striker needs to know when its not his shot and dish it to an open player to give his team the best chance to win also tomass. Hutton takes to many on his own and plays to predictable by only dishing to his brother, he is is not a complete player like a KP or Teal.
of course hes no KP or Teal, nobody from this state is near them. so dont compare people to them. the closest one is chris sutton. but no mshsl hs players
If Mr. Soccer was all about the points you put up then the award would never go to a goalkeeper. (Last two years AA and A have had one) Mr. Soccer is about the person on the field who makes the most impact and the ability to step up in big games. Vint has shown this many times throught this year putting away goals when they are much needed and playing hardnosed defense when the situation calls for it. Many players these days dont understand the concept of a team and playing selfless instead of selfish. In my mind the player who posses this trait among other team orientated characteristics should win it whomever it is.
anon 9:14,
No need to knock the Gibbons twins because Rosenthal was injured.
The twins were club teammates of Rosie's for the past 3 years and they understand that Rosenthal is probably the most complete player to come out of Minnesota in the past several years.
If not for his injury he most likely would have been Mr Soccer in 2006 and I'm sure the twins are well aware of that. They know he's a fantastic all around player who can play any position and play them all well.
He's starting as a frosh at a D1 school and opposing coaches have already commented on his overall ability and maturity on the field.
How is all-state decided?
How is all-state decided? The coaches from each section meet when they seed the teams. They nominate their players for all-state and everyone there votes. Decided!
So you are saying that the section coaches decided who gets all-state? I bet some of them have never seen or even heard of some of the kids in their section. This is done before sections even start?
You got it--the coaches come and brag about their respective players. Some coaches will vote for yours if you vote for theirs. Usually it's not so petty, but it happens. Many people are surprised that it is so simple--they expect a grand state-wide council debating the merits of individual players or something like that...
Known fact to who? Or is that whom? Rosenthal is certainly a great player, but to say he would have been a runaway is ridiculous. And what truth hurts? What do you work for the local Fox affiliate?
Don't know about minutes at Milwaukee, but I do know that the Mr. Soccer twin had a back issue which kept him out of club soccer all summer.
Wait, I just check on minutes, Abe has been in one game. Also check the last 4 Mr. Soccers for minutes freshmen year and this year:
06 AA Vint - 0 games as a freshmen, 1 game this year
06 A Miller - 7 games as freshmen, played every game this year, having a great season
07 AA Gibbons - 1 game this year
07 A Grandstrand - started 7 of 9 games this year, having a great season
Looks like the real stars are the Single A guys!
Where are all of those guys playing in college?
Let's not kid ourselves that the fact you play A or AA in high school has anything to do with success in college soccer.
The work these players put in every summer and winter with their club teams for years trumps anything they did in a few 6-8 week HS seasons.
But the AA guys get a lot more attention than the A guys in the press and even here.
In picking all state if a player is not nominated by his own coach then can another coach nominate someone from another team?
That's so political it stinks, some of the best players may not even get recognized because their coach may not like them?
I assume that this happens all the time. Is there any panel that really can review and say a particular player should not be all-state?
"Panel"? You must be kidding. If your coach doesn't like you, you are screwed. Most coaches are worried about their own kids--they aren't going to nominate some other team's players.
Anyway, I'm quite excited to see some section finals tonight! A few of these games will be the best of the fall. It's also fun to see who can really handle themselves! Some highly regarded teams do great against weak teams, but they have trouble with a balanced team. I'm thinking Wayzata among others.
Ah yes, club soccer better prepares the players for college play. But it is easier to accumulate stats at single A schools playing all of the 'Sister of Tears' schools with 125 boys in the fall sports pool.
Vint and Miller at UW-Madison
Gibbons at UW-Milwaukee
Grandstrand at Brown University
Many a player are left off all state because their coaches don't like them...or favor another player. There is also coach-coach politics...if a coach is not well liked, his player nominations may fall on def ears...yes it does happen. I am surprise that Gibbons won Mr. Soccer last year with the former coach, Craig, running up scores the way he did. And yes I know from previous threads that his stars "rarely, if ever" played the 2nd half of games in blow outs...he still let the scores run up.
Noteworthy kids playing D1 as freshmen are Ben Sippola for Butler University,Calvin Mai and Van Hong for U of W Milwaukee getting significant minutes and games played and Dan Krugger U of W green bay (no start yet but certainly with a good team)
Bayode Adafin of Rochester Lourdes has started every game as a freshman at Columbia U - he should get to play against Grandstrand at Brown
Bayode Adafin, Ben Sippola,Chris Sutton, and Colin Monasterio all made the 1989 region team. Colin M is headed to Madison with the Wisconsin Badgers and Chris S is headed to Notre Dame. What a terrific group of young men!!
I thought this was a topic for Individual Soccer awards in '07? Could someone fill me in on why we are talking about college freshmen?
can you please move over to the 2007 D1, D2 and D3 Players and Teams site? there we can have all the D1-D3 conversations.
I have a philosophical question.
Why do we have an individual award for a team sport?
It seems this award generates many critics for various reasons. Like what defines Mr. Soccer? Who decides who Mr. Soccer is? Should they be deciding Mr. Soccer? What are their motivations? I mean just look at this thread. On the other hand, a lot of time and energy is spent deciphering who is the “best player” in the state. This game is not American Football; no one is counting how many tackles, steals, successful passes, how often a player moves off the ball. Are there similar awards in other countries where soccer is prevalent or it this an American creation? I'm new to the sport of soccer but the game does not seem conducive to this type of award. I suspect there are quite a few coaches who get frustrated with the destruction this award cause to their teams.
Please no attacks, I have no agenda here just some honest confusion over what the purpose of such an award is?
This is HS. Why do we have a valedictorian?
Why we have this award is because we need something to feel good about. This is as
American as apple pie.
I think this should like the Presidential race. Kids should campaign and have banners and the works. The kids apply and we get to hear their reasons for wanting the award.
Based on their case, a panel of grown-ups(who never played the game) like MYSA or High school league decides who the best player is based on their presentation. We can start a whole new award!
"Based on their case, a panel of grown-ups(who never played the game) like MYSA or High school league decides who the best player is based on their presentation. We can start a whole new award!"
Too close to the truth!
The World has the same type of award its called the FIFA world player of the year...
I almost forgot the Europeans have the European player of the year the Africans have the African player of the year and so on.. Awards like this happen it is a goal that some people shoot for just because your team or your kid are not recieving such big recognition doesnt mean others cant... Just relax
PETER MCKEOWN!!! best goalie in the state hands down!!!
yea if i was 6 foot 8 i would be pretty good too, I've seen the kid play many times he is a good solid goalie but not the best in the state
theres more to being a goalie than being big. if you know anything about soccer you would know that.
Does anyone know when the all-state selection committee meets?
is that the woodbury kid? playin on hill right??
Anon 5:32 There is no all-state comittee. Someone posted earlier about this. The coaches chose during their section seed meetings last week.
The All State nominees come out of the conference (not section) coaches meetings. A list is developed by each coach putting up zero, one or more players. The stats for the top N players are in front of all the coaches. When the list is complete, then all the coaches individually rank the picks from 1 to N and all the results are compiled to create a master list. That list then goes to a meeting of all the MSHSSCA All State Selection Committee for their consideration. The section reps (not conference) make up that committee.
The kicker is... If a coach is not a member of the MSHSSCA ($50 per year), their school cannot have any All State players selected.
I vote David St. Hubbins for All-State. He rocks.
Guess what I think about the selection politics.
Peter McKeowen is the most overrated goalie this year by far.
I think the all-state goalies will be between the southwest goalie i don't know how to spell his name and the lakeville north goalie glassman because i have heard good things about both
vaughn from southwest
so there is a committee anon 7:48?
Yeah, there is one. Go to the coaches website and you'll see more than you ever wanted to know about it!
http://www.mshssca.org/recognition/allstate.html
glassman from LN will win all state goalie
the glassman guy did horrible in playoffs but do playoffs get counted at all?
All-State votes are compiled prior to sections.
i was scouting the lakeville game vs. century and it could have been worse without glassman
What about mike sikich from AV how can he not be considered, he only gave up four goals all season, he may not be the flashiest or make the most spectacular looking saves, but the stats dont lie, the kid gets the job done, i say he and the entire defense should get some sort of serious recognition, obarski, hautman, and uzlik have done an awesome job in front of him making his life much easier
Not on topic but it was just reported the Minnesota Thunder and Lightning franchises have been sold to a group from Europe.
All obarski does is kick the ball as hard as he can... half of the time he shanks it out of bounds. Hautman deserves it from AV.
If I may ask what is the job of the sweeper? I know , I know it is to not let anything get by you as the last defender, does obarski do a wonderful job of this, the answer is yes, most of time yes it is just a one touch and out but that is what is needed a lot as a last defender, and you can not argue the fact that he had 6 goals this season from the sweeper position, he himself scored more goals than the entire team gave up, if you ask me that is a pretty valuable weapon at sweeper
no...obarski can kick it a mile but he tries stupid moves that get stuffed and then uzlik and hautman dig him out of a hole. Sikich has made himself a candidate for sure for all state with the 4 goals...he hasnt had a lot of saves but he has made some unreal ones
Someone earlier said he just tries to blast it, now someone says he tries stupid moves. From what I saw at the Sibley game he clears everything plays solid second defender when someone needs help, steps up when he needs to. Why would he not get talked about for All-State him, Hautman, Sikich, Uzlik, they all must be doing something right back there this year.
As a HS coach, I need to say that what has been reported about All-State being a fair and judicious award involving conference and section officials...nope. In practice, it sounds like a great idea.
Reality is a bit different. Someone here has a pretty good idea of what happens... Life isn't always fair.
how can mckeown be overrated?! he let in 6 goals all year, two were pk's and 3 were shots that were deflected right in front of him. if u dont think hes the best goalie in the state, then u have obviously never played soccer at a high level
Goals conceded records have alot to do with the strength of the entire team. If a backline is under siege most of the time they're bound to give up their share of goals off of deflections and unlucky breaks.
However, I'm not taking anything away from defenders... they obviously have alot to do with it. I'm just saying that a low goals conceded record from a team does not always indicate that they possess the top-notch, all-state caliber defenders.
Goals conceded is a factor in which every player on the field contributes to.
Strikers defend and try to keep the ball in attack third. Middies are very involved in defending and obviously the backs are.
If a team has a great offense and keeps possession of the ball and pressure on the opponent the goalkeeper's numbers will look better.
Sometimes the best goalkeeper in the world will have a poor goals against average because the rest of the team is poor.
The coaches who have seen the kids play are in the best position to make these choices.
I think a valuable keeper stat is how many saves they have compared to how many goals they have allowed. Of course it can be controversial as to what is counted as a save and what is not--but if a keeper has hundreds of saves in a season and a low amount of goals conceded, some of those have to be quality saves.
Also lets not get on here and bash players..especially when you are putting down teams and calling players stupid when you can't even put together a coherent sentence. I would be willing to bet that a lot of people on here have only seen some teams play once, if at all, and are rating based purely on numbers. The hard part about soccer is that there aren't many stats that reflect how good a player truly is. What I am trying to get across is what your mother has told you your entire life. If you don't have anything nice to say, don't say anything at all. And in some people's cases, if you don't have anything intelligent to contribute, don't type anything at all.
haha this is true. there are many players out there with no stats to show their importance to their team (ie. colin monasterio). so many people are basing their opinions of a player on either low stats, or maybe one bad game.... so it is truly unfair to bash players under these circumstances.
nobody is bashing monasterio. this post is full of people making the case for mr. soccer. nobody is saying that he is a bad player...he is a very good player, he is important to his team, the question is should his performance this year win mr. soccer? or should another player win it?
just thought id clear things up mckeown is 6'6", not 6'8".
wow kid he was using monasterio as an example. dont pretend like nobody on here has been bashing
3 conference titles,2 section championships, 1 state championship ,4 yr lettered senior playing 90 minutes in every game, back for one more state championship run with a team that critics have said has only 2-3 good players,4 assists and one goal in the last 3 section games because of his ability to control the midfield and distribute the ball vs 25 seniors that have scored over 20 goals this year with most of their teams already out of the state tournament. How high should the bar be set?
dont act like mono did anything amazing his 1st two years. sure he was a good player, but he definitly didnt lead those teams to their sucess. however i do give him the utmost respect for his last 2 years, because teams base their play on marking him out of the game and he is stil a dominant force.
Wayzata soccer has always been about teamwork and he has carried that role for the past 4 years. No razzle dazzle but just sound technical team soccer. This year, they have 3 captains (Tyler Vint (F)Colin M (M) Tim Paulson (D)) that are having fun and believe they can do it one more time!
Hard to tell how many AA Mr Soccer candidates were nominated but I am sure the list will include these boys mentioned and a few more. October playoff soccer is what it is all about.
can anyone tell me more about sikich? I have never heard of him..who does he play for in the summer, and has he really been tested that well?
Sikich played for prior lake's U17 C1 team last summer, and he is very technically sound and makes all the easy saves and some spectacular ones as well, AV's solid defense makes his job easy, but he has had to make some amazing saves this season too
Ive seen sikich play 4 or 5 times and im not convinced that hed be as good without the personnel in front of him
go watch one of sikich's practices, all av does it shoot, and he works his tail off while taking a beating. he makes a ton of fantastic saves, while never giving up the easy ones. the 4 goals is credit to both the defense and siki. hes a great goalie deserving of all-state
i dont think awards are based off ur performance in practice....
sounds like sikich was just plain lucky that rosemount had terrible shots when given a wide-open net due to sikich's mistakes.
that article was very false, ask any rosemount player or anyone who was there and sikich never once almost cost av a goal
i was at the game he played very well especially in those type of conditions. Granted he hasn't had many shots but i've seen him play in other games and when the av defense has a breakdown, and he needs to make saves he does all the time.
This is weird. A few people are nuts about convincing us that a player either does or does not deserve all-state.
You guys know that this has already been decided, right? In fact, you can go to the state banquet tomorrow and buy a t-shirt with the whole all-state list printed on it. Think they are still deciding what names they should print on that T-shirt? Nope.
Mr. Soccer has been notified also. If your kid doesn't know yet, it's not him.
The only "award" that has yet to be decided is the tournament team, where the votes are due at half-time of the Championship.
has anyone had their son notified that he is all state?
the letter i got said that i was picked for all state or all state honorable mention, it doesn't say one or the other. so people can still have fun speculating.
what school do you play for?
The letters are given to those players whose Teams did not qualify for the Tournament. They want to have them at the Banquets today so they can receive their awards. Mr. Soccer hasn't been notified in the past. I would be surprised if they started doing that now. Mr. Soccer candidates would all be there because they would have been selected llate. Hope you enjoy the Banquets today. See you there!
All State process is not exactly a science.... very subjective if a Coach pushes a player life is good, or if he is a new Coach he may not have the ability to sell his player.
Congrats to all who were selected.
WHEN WILL THE AWARDS BE ANNOUNCED
Sunday 10/21 at the banquet
From the parents of Mike & Nick Hutton... Congrats to Colin Monesterio for Mr.Soccer! Well earned. Congrats also to all of the other all-state athletes and state tourney teams. We look forward to the competition on the pitch. Best of luck to all.
Nice Banquet. It was a great facility and it moved along quickly. Congratulations to all of the boys for their well desrved recognition. Congrats to the Team who qualified, to the All State and All State Honorable Mention Players and to Mr. Soccer's K.P. and Colin. It will be a great week and a half ahead of us. I look forward to enjoying it all!

Surprising that Fridley had no players listed! They had some good players (#9, #14, #17)...
Just...KP, congrats from the African American soccer community. You are making the African American community proud and for hanging in there throughout the difficult times and all the negative criticism. It has been a long overdue before an African American lifted the Mr. MN soccer trophy. You may not realize this but it is history in the making and many years from now, you will know what it means. Keep up the good work and we look forward to seeing you in college or pros which ever route you choose.

Amazing how some people still cant believe the AV goalie didn't get an award.
Remember--this is not always fair.
I've never seen four kids from one team on the list. AV had three this year. Scanlon needs to decide who he is going to push/campaign at the section meeting. Clearly he got three boys through.
Again, a GK's G.A.A. doesn't mean a whole lot if you have rockstars in front of you.
and last, as someone noted, the system is a bit of a joke, as listed earlier by the Heritage issue...
How does a team make it to the state tournament without ONE of their players being nominated as an all state or all state honorable mention player? Just curious ;)
Anon: 10:52 - I hear if your coach doesn't like you - Good luck at getting nominated!
Anon 11:04
Maybe your coach hasn't been around long enough to earn any respect! Not sure how that relates to how good you are as a player - but if you were at the banquet Sunday night you know there are coaches out there that should be long gone.
Anon 10:52 - Because everyone is worried about themselves. Screw everyone else. That's why this is a joke--the people involved are biased.
I'm still upset that David St. Hubbins didn't get recognized.
Is it just me or does Lulu's statement bother anyone one else. I am happy for BOTH KP & CM regardless of their ethnic origin. I am excited to see the opportunities this recognition brings them. I am bothered that their accomplishments and the award prestige has been slander with hints of racism. I am bothered that groups or people feel the need to use someone’s accomplishments to promote there social agenda’s.
I think a few teams have no one on the All-state list. MG, Fridley, I'm sure there are others. This is nothing new. Lots of factors here... But if you can't get the kid out of sections, you are screwed.
Anon 12:28 Can you explain that comment "If you can't get the kid out of sections" Am I wrong - I thought state selections were made before sections even started - If that is not true how do you explain that comment to MG making it out of section ans on to state and still having no one selected - Just trying to figure it out - Maybe we can't
Anon 1:28--sorry--What I meant was the section meeting. The coaches decide who goes forward at the section meeting. Thus, you can have a team held in low-esteem that won't get any recognition. Nobody could forsee them going to state.
It is possible that the Fridley coach is not a member of the coaches association (a requirement to have players receive post-season awards, such as all-state!!!!!).
Selection for potential All State are definitely made before sections. They come out of the Conference coaches meeting and then they get submitted to the Section reps, who act as the All State committee.
In order to be all-state, you have to be nominated by your coach as all-conference.
I can't believe that Andover had an all-state honorable mention... and Fridley or MG had none.
To some degree Lulu is correct. How was Geoffrey Meyers (Armstrong), Michael Green (ParkCenter?) and Martin Browne (Osseo) overlooked as Mr. Soccer in more recent years? Especially Geoffrey Meyers, who I think most would agree, was probably the best MN HS player to ever stepped on the field. And don't go off saying that Mr. Soccer is more than being the best player. Geoffery's behavior was better than average and we have had recent Mr. Soccers from Wayzata and Jefferson that were complete screw offs (albeit nice guys.) No not CM or RV.
Michael Greene and Martin Brown were both from Osseo and their leading scorers. I do not think they were overlooked by any means except the fact that they were in contention along w Ryan Vint. Both boys are doing well playing D1 soccer in Marquette and Western Illinois.I think there are more issues with Geoffrey Meyers than we are aware of, the least of them is his academic eligiblity and real age. As far as I know, He cannot even entertain playing pro right now due to some issues. No one ever questioned his immense talent but you have to wonder what really happened to him.
Don't forget the Mr Soccer screw off from Edina.
I think of the 3 of them only the Jefferson player is still in college and playing.
One last thing. I've been involved on teams with Myers and he's nowhere near the player Keido Pour is.
and stillwell of jefferson is only playing d3 at st. thomas
I am confused are you saying that Mr. Soccer is a racist award. Alternatively, is it slanted so that the out state players never win? On the other hand, that players from the Northwest Suburban Conference or any other conference you may want to name has not had a player yet award this prestige. Or have we had any Latino, Hmong, French, Italian, Jewish, Catholic or Later Day Saints won this award? My point being, I think the award is an issue of interpretation.
I am upset for every player who has won this award, because someone has now implicated that it is a racist award and diminished other Mr. Soccer award winners their accomplishments.
I had many nasty and ugly thought provoked by Lulu’s post, it ticks me off that she could not gracefully offer congratulations. Take a gander at Hutton offer of congratulations and learn from it.
Greene and Brown were both good, but not Mr. Soccer. Having played against them, they were no better than many of the guys that year.
Stillwell at D3 "only"? There are many good players in the MIAC.
This is aside from the point that the possible future of a player should be considered in Mr. Soccer?
Get Real.
Does anyone have any info on david nadeau? I thought white bear was bad this year?
Chris Galinski, from Rochester, won Mr. Soccer a few years back and deserved it.
I think GM was better than KP in high school. KP is an outstanding player, and may be able to stick with a D1 program. His issue will be discipline and work rate over 90 minutes. Geoffrey has certainly had some issues of late, but it should not tarnish his HS accomplishments.
Either way, I think this year's Mr. Soccer award winners deserve their award and should be congratulated.
I was very surprised to see that Tyler Vint, Wayzata, was only honorable mention for All State.
Stillwell could be a standout at most D1 programs, but he decided D1 was not for him. I heard UWM coaches trash talked about him when he left their program, they have show themselves as poor coaches anyway. Let's see UWM is about 4-9-1 and Marquette is 2-9-2. Bennett inherrited a good program at UWM. They are bunch of knuckle-heads and should be fired. I feel bad for all the MN kids in those programs.
how did Kyle Farrell not make the all-state list at all? That's ridiculous..
who the heck is kyle farrell? and jon stillwell would never do anything D1. hes got the talent....but he is too lazy.
I still am puzzled how two players on
Heritage Christian a 5-9-2 team can make the Honor Roll in Class A. I am sure they are fine players but I cant
see a single case of a player from a weak team making it without overwhelming stats... both these players stats are less than average on a team less than average.... from a conference that is not incredible
Anon 11:15--I assume this is a rhetorical question, as it has already been answered ad naseum.
it wasn't even a question. he was pretty much just talking aloud to himself.
If the coach does not promote the player they will be over looked for awards. If the coach is not liked due to "personality conflicts" with the rest of the conference coaches, the player will be over looked. This may be the case with Fridley, MG and many other teams not having a rep for All State. If is unfortunate for the players.
this is pretty off topic and i know ill probably be bashed for this.... but what summer club had the most allstate players?
Anon 8:08pm
What coach would NOT nominate their own player - That does not even make sense. It is not only about promoting your players BUT also the team and its program - not promoting your own player would hurt your own program - Give me proof where this has happened -
And maybe it isn't about a coach not being liked - Maybe they haven't been around for 20-25 years and the old boys network won't let them in - Could be a ton of reasons!
Anon 8:55pm seems to be on the most logical reason why some kids are picked over others - don't think it is about highschool at all!
I have been in these meetings. Summer experience plays heavily, as that is where many make their reputations. Also, remember that many of the section coaches that are voting for the kids have never seen them in action...
Anon 8:36
Nominating a player does not mean that you are promoting them. It could be for show.
I know of at least 1 player who has been regional ODP in the past who did not even get Honorable mention. So summer play is only part of the process.
who is that player?
For the Class A All-State goalies, were those nominations deserved? I didn't get a chance to see the junior from Duluth, but did see Jackley from Blake, who seemed a tad on the overrated side to me. His back line did not let anything back to him, and in the game I saw the one time they did, Simley made him pay.
Dula Fadis and Ryan MacArthur make the USL Super y league 89-90 ODP national team as alternates.
who did dula even play for? he played a couple games with bangu i know that... but was that it?
Dula Fadis is playing with the Bangu U17 MWL team.
Where does MacArthur play?
Same team.
Dula Fadis was with the USYSA ODP 91 pool. He played Club at Wings U16 last year (as was Keido Poure.) I don't know anything about the USL ODP program.
KP played sparingly with the Wings U-18 team. He missed more games than he played.
Ryan certainly got better after he left SSM and I would say he's a shoe in for Class A, Mr Soccer. What will hurt him, is they don't play anyone. It's not hard to look good if you only play the other small out state school and none of the private school.
Dula is no CM, his ODP selection is suspect as a previous poster mentioned. Perhaps he'll improve now that he move on to Bangu, but last year for the Wings he was slow, and pretty much unnoticed. So, I'd look at these guys before considering Dula for Class AA Mr. Soccer: Holms forward from CP, Gustafson defender from Anoka, Webster goalie from MG, Kalivoda forward from Wayzata, Yusuf forward from EP, Bequette mid/forward from EP and Hong mid from Osseo. No order but stand out players I saw play both summer and HS, but I'll admitt I don't see much soccer east of the Mississippi so I'm probably missing a group of guys over there.
No offense to Mac Arthur he is a great player but he struggles on a young High school team.
When they play good teams he does very little because you mark him
and the matches outcome is a given. Awesome skills but look at his stats
he scores bunches against bad teams He is still a great player but does very little against decent teams.
yusuf is a 19 year old sophmore, sorry but i believe hes ineligible next year..... but nobody is talking about jimmy karagorgio or ryan schlittler... both great scorers
I don't think Jimmy is that good of a player up top, he is a better defender. Schlittler loses alot of his help from a team that was already not very solid.
The overage thing confuses me. The St. Cloud player, (Colburn) I believe is 17-18 but listed as a sophomore? He is new to the country and I believe was started a couple a grades back to allow him to succeed academically. Which I think is academically great and were the emphasis should be, but does that make him ineligible for Mr. Soccer thou? I would hope not.
Schlitter I maybe confusing him with a kid I thought went to SSM. However, the point you make about help from your teammates is a valid one for both MacArthur and Schlitter. I wonder how many players understand that part of achieving Mr. & Ms Soccer status is getting your teammates help and motivating them to work for you. I would suspect very few Mr. & Ms Soccer who have done it on their own.
I guess the coaches or selectors at the ODP camp are biased towards players with technical ability, stamina and overall soccer talent. Dula is the best player in high school but will not win Mr. Soccer because of the school he plays for and the minneapolis league. Give credit to players that make it fun to watch soccer games.
Ages of players vary greatly in the same class in high school.
Take for example the Hutton twins who just finished their senior year of HS soccer. They were U16 players this past summer.
Monsasterio who just finished his senior year was a U18 player this pasy MYSA season.
MSHSL goes by class year not by age when it comes to Mr and Ms Soccer awards.
There really is no other way to do it.
The best that I can say about ODP is it is broke and they are trying to fix it. Compare this year Mr. Soccer to the above-mentioned player----is there any comparison? I do not think what league he is in has anything to do it. To be honest I think any middle midfielder is going to have the same difficulty next year.
anon 3:42
Gibbons won it in 2006 playing for Minneapolis South.
anon 3:42,
btw...i do agree that Dula is the best player but we all know it takes the stars all aligning to win Mr. Soccer.
Dula is a talented player but when I saw him play this past Fall he was the fourth best player on the field. The three players who were better that day will graduate and he won't have to compete against them next fall. Looking forward to hearing about next season. Anyone going to the Senior Classic on Wednesday night at the Dome? For the first time the are having the AA vs. A. Should be fun to watch. I hope all of our best Seniors play.
The AA's with Monasterio, Colago, Hutton's (2x), Vint, McKeown, Paulson, Kessler, Lezama, Mallace, Lundgren, Hautman, Roach and Svedin looks like a strong team. A's will have KP, Dressen, Schultz, Frey, Geary, and Lembach. AA's are deeper but the A's have some real scoring power. Should be fun to watch these guys one last time as High Schoolers.
It's a shame the way they pick the coaches all-state teams cause some good kids are missing out, either way good luck to those playing.
An AA vs A All Star game looks like a poor decision. A few years ago my son played in this event and there was a big gap in the skill level of the two classes to include coaches. Mixing the teams randomly evened up the game. The outstate Class A coach was very impressed with some of his Class AA talent based their practice at Holy Angels. He even asked one of the players if he was planning to play in college. The player was Andrei Gotsmanov. Hopefully times have changed in four years.
I agree that the AA v A is a bad decision. Could be a very one sided game, but I hope for the sake of all participants, it is an event game. At least KP will give A some scoring punch, if he ever sees that ball.
the st. paul all state team came out today... any suprises or snubs on it???
i find it hard to believe they didnt pick monasterio or KP for POY. and they picked a Jr. Defender for POY Girls?
St Paul Pioneer Press will always select a POY east of the river and Mike Hutton would be the right choice. As for a defender for the girls POY, a junior at that, she must be pretty good.Congrats to both!
Why would you say its hard to believe? The kid scored 28 goals. It's not long he was a complete longshot for Mr. Soccer even.
Mike is a very talented player and very deserving of the recognition. The group of players that the Pioneer Press selected was very impressive. I think we all would have liked to see that starting eleven play together along with any of the Honorable Mentions. Congratulations to all of the players on being selected!
any thoughts on the all state game????
Yes, outside of a few players, the play was very, very average for HS soccer.
