I think Thomas Obarski should be Mr Soccer because he's the best player on the best HS team in the state. His club team is also great.

Thanks Dad!

I think you are all nuts. Thinking that by pushing a kid on a blog will help them win a High school award. ODP and club accomplishments should have nothing to do Mr. or Ms. Soccer.

The new AA Girls Poll (IMHO)
1. EP
2. EP
3. EP
4. Jefferson
5. Wayzata
6. Duluth East
7. East Ridge
8. WBL
9. Woodbury
10. Eagan/Edina/Centennial/Anoka
14. Stillwater/Coon Rapids

PWs great Badger team tied the vaunted SDSU Jackrabbits. Must be either the impressive recruiting or the stellar coaching. MDW and the Gophs might as well give up now.

OLD REF said...

Talked with one of the referees who worked the Jefferson Woodbury game this weekend. He didn't know of EM. Here's how he described the game to me. Jefferson was playing good soccer and went up 2-0 by half. Then this kid takes over and scores three goals for Woodbury, he was amazing. Also spoke with a parent from Jefferson who stated they got beat by EM (not Woodbury), and the parent meant it as a compliment to him, not a dig at his team.

Hey folks, so far I have not heard of any crazy parent issues at games. Maybe we are learning! Still lot's of handball yelling, but hopefully that is just wishful thinking and not ignorance.

8:41 I do think having a solid soccer history should be part of the consideration for MR and MS Soccer. I also think playing the game properly should be required, not just scoring tons of goals on lesser competition. Leading your team to success? Probably.

So IMHO, there are several candidates. But it's still early, enjoy the games folks.

Anonymous said...

I fully agree with you on playing the game properly and leading your team as the most important parts of being named Mr or Ms Soccer. Last year Ms Soccer was awarded to a defender for Class AA and a goalie for Class A. It's not always about who can score the most goals. It's about who plays the game with passion and leaves it out on the field, no matter what position they play.

Mister Soccer said...

Looks like the MN boys are doing alright at the WI schools. CM is leading Marquette. CM, RV and PY are starting at Madison. GR is starting at Milw with AGs and BW on the roster.

Where is the 2009 AA Mr. Soccer?

Still cracks me up that BW didn't play HS in 2009 and is now one of the few boys playing D1 soccer. That can tell you something about recruiting, ODP, club and HS soccer.

That's quite a drop for Stillwater. I wasn't at the Woodbury game, but I heard that it was closer than the score suggests, and Stillwater had two goals called off. Any good matches to catch this week? Looks as if Rosemount has not let in a goal all season.

Anonymous said...

not many good games tonight. maybe burnsville v rosemount to see which of those 2 are top 10 contenders. rosemount 2-1 i predict

Anonymous said...

Burnsville 2-1. Rosemount has some players but other than Eagan Rosemount has played nobody.

Anonymous said...

Southwest will go all the way.

Anonymous said...

1-0 Rosemount

Anonymous said...

"Rosemount has some players but other than Eagan, Rosemount has played nobody."

Always comes down to individuals, especially at the lower levels.

Anonymous said...

In the current Girls AA pool

Centennial is probably way overrated, but won't face any serious competition
unless they mess up vs Anoka or Coon Rapids.

Stillwater is still too high, needed OT at home to get by AV (probably last place in South Suburban), and got shut out by Woodbury, a good team that is average defensively. Haven't played anyone except Woodbury.

Edina and Woodbury slightly overrated, Duluth East, East Ride, WBL slightly underrated.

ClassAA Girls Guy said...

Handicapper -

EP over Edina 3-0
Andover CR 2-2
Centennial over MG 3-1

Tomorrow:

EV over LS 2-0
ER over MV 3-1
Stillwater over CDH 4-0
Woodbury over Park 2-1

6:10PM -

I think Centennial deserves to be in the top 10. The have some good talent but aren't a #3. Either Anoka or CR can beat them on any given day, but neither of those teams are in section 5AA. Centennial should walk to the State Tournament.

Stillwater dominated both the AV game and the Woodbury game and I still think they are favorites to come out of a tough 4AA section. I think they're a solid 9.

Not sure Woodbury and Edina are overrated. Who else would you put above them? East Ridge has a good record but I don't think you can put them much higher in the current top 10.

Suburban East will be sorted out more in the coming 2 weeks with a lot of key match ups.

My early doors guesses for section winners:

1AA - Lakeville North
2AA - EP (though I'm feeling a Blooming Jeff upset brewing)
3AA - Eastview/Rosemount
4AA - Stillwater/WHS/ER/WBL
5AA - Centennial
6AA - Wayzata
7AA - Duluth East
8AA - STMA

Good analysis - appreciate it. Although not ranked, what about an aggressive Osseo team? Hopkins?

Minnehaha parent (girls soccer)...thought we were pretty good....until tonight. We just got dominated by SPA girls...didn't think they were supposed to be that good. They are quite young. Section 3A for girls should probably be Blake.

Anonymous said...

3AA Rosemount is very average, with one exceptional attacker. Very fortunate to tie Eagan late in regulation. Eastview may improve as the season goes on as they have some talent, but weak at GK, Currently not a good team. Eagan needs to find some scoring punch. I would bet on Eagan/Eastview in the final.

Mr Soccer post 13/9/10 10:08 AM

2009 Mr. Soccer is PY. I think you answer that question in your post.

Are you asking where the 2008 Mr. Soccer is? That would be WB for class AA and DK for Class A. WB the last I heard was playing at Garden City Community College he had some eligibility issues for D1 Soccer and is hoping to resolving them by playing at a Community College. As far as I can tell he is still playing there. DK was reported to be going to Valparaiso University. As far as I can tell he never showed up. When you google him, he is a no show as well. However he is not the only no show (or under performer) as far as Mr. Soccer goes. KP from 2008 Class A is also a no show. The rest of the Mr. Soccer seem to find there way over to Wisconsin. In fact any that are playing D1 College soccer, other than PG from 2007, are all in Wisconsin.

QRFs came out this week. Check out the disparity between rank and QRFs:

Class A Boys
Poll QRF
1 21 St. Paul Como
2 4 Mankato East
3 3 Benilde-St. Margaret's
4 7 Rochester Lourdes
5 1 Prairie Seeds Academy
6 10 DeLaSalle
7 26 Simley
8 9 St. Paul Humboldt
9 17 Totino-Grace
10 23 Proctor

Class AA Boys
Poll QRF
1 3 Apple Valley Eagles
2 25 Minneapolis Southwest
3 4 Edina
4 5 Spring Lake Park
5 2 Woodbury
6 1 Stillwater Area
7 8 Eagan
8 7 Wayzata
9 10 Maple Grove
10 11 Minneapolis South

Except for MPLS SW, it looks like the poll responders have a decent grasp of how the teams should be ranked in AA. At least has the right bunch at the top. Fairly clueless in A.

Someone want to put together RPI numbers for soccer?

Anonymous said...

Please excuse my ignorance. What is a QRF?

Anonymous said...

It may have hurt BJ's college chances that he did not play club soccer this summer

Anonymous said...

Doubtful...This past summer would have been way too late to "be discovered." That happens more in junior year. His VU team played but was tournament only and played MRL premier league, blasting everyone away.

Maybe he just wanted to get his education at the U of M regardless?

I am simply speculating because some kids ( like my own) choose the school before the soccer--that after playing years of MRL, tournaments, Prmr League, high school, etc.

Anonymous said...

He must not have "loved" the game the same way most players play for the "love" of the game and play the game they "love" to play.

Anonymous said...

BJ did not play for valley this summer, started to and then quit the team before March, maybe a little insight into why he is only playing club soccer and not NCAA, but still playing after high school and the U of M club team is very good

Anonymous said...

The U club team is better than most NCAA D-3 teams.

Anonymous said...

What were the scores when the U played the MIAC teams this fall?

Anonymous said...

Could it not be possible that maybe he just got burned out with highly competitive soccer? It's happened to many kids!

Anonymous said...

Burned out? If we play because it's fun and because we "love" it, how do you get burned out? Bad coaching who doesn't make it fun?

Anonymous said...

I would say that overbearing parents contribute to burning out more than coaching

Anonymous said...

When you can no longer leave the game on the pitch, burnout can come quickly. The game is no longer fun or an escape from the rest of life if off the pitch the play and the player are over scrutinzed. Now there is a time and place to review play in order to get better and correct mistakes. However I wonder how many players would love a quiet ride home with mom and dad after a game, especially a loss. And how much review by the coach and parents is just a venue for the coaches and parents to vent disappointment. I read a long time ago that the best thing for a parent to say to a player after a game is "I enjoyed watching you play, what do you want to eat?"

(stepping off the soap box now)

splitsville

Mister Soccer said...

I like it Splitsville. But I think there are a lot of coaches out there who are completely clueless who don't know how to make the game fun. As I've said before, if everyone knows we play for fun and if that is what coaches are focused on, why do so many players prematurely quit?

Simple answer...the coaches don't make it fun.

Anonymous said...

Blaming the coaches of BJ not wanting to play soccer because it was not fun because of them is a far fetched statement considering who both of his coaches were fellas. (summer and hs) Might want to follow a little more closely.

Anonymous said...

So you're saying his parents burned him out?

Anonymous said...

Who said he burned out? Playing on a club team doesn't equate to burned out. To me it equates to he still enjoys the game and is continuing to play.

Are college players who do not make it to the next level and subsequently begin the rest of their lives get labeled as burned out? They could go play "pro" at a lower level ...

Stop people, the decision to play or not in college is personal. You don't get to decide!

mama mia said...

Interesting that the same person that hates on some players for going to low-profile NCAA schools to attempt to play soccer now defends 2009's top player for essentially hanging up the cleats by going to play on the U's club team.

From IMS - has BQ lost his mind, or just his impartiality?

"Wright and assistant coaches Jerrod Roh and Krystle Kallman all conduct clinics and seminars throughout the state and both work with MYSA club soccer. “It’s a testament to my assistant coaches as well,” said Wright. “They’ve never been paid a dollar for their (volunteer) work and it’s all about just trying to be out there and promote the game in Minnesota.”

um, of course they have not been paid for their (volunteer) work - but you can bet your arse they have been paid for their club soccer work!

bq, what is your agenda? you seem to have a plan about your approach to youth soccer, and it seems to be less than unbiased this year.

tomASS said...

819 - nothing decent to comment on here as of late, One thread has become a rock soup of 3 different topics. The amount of anons make it hard to define and segregate opinions. Found better blogs long ago. But since you need a fix ;-)

1) U of M Women's Soccer - well done! Much deserved (finally) for the team and Mikki. Maybe she should take over for Brewster?

2) Boys HS - ZZZZZZZZZZZZZ. Last year's Mr. Soccer: 924 has it right. Why should any of us be concerned about his decision. An award does not define him and his choices. It is for his past accomplishments and does not determine his future decisions

3) Girls HS Soccer - the best HS female player in the state is #4 KT or is it CT? for EP. No player controls the tempo and flow of the game as she does, can play multiple roles in one game without losing her role of influence. She makes all her teammates around her better. EP's team problem is bench strength

4) BQ from IMS - it was an interview, and quote he was reporting. Did you want him to change the quote so it came across differently? Found the statement to be arrogant and ignorant as she attempted to give kudos to her asst. coaches.

Mister Football said...

1) Yes.
2) Agreed...and Anonymous shouldn't hate on the academically challenged players trying to make it at Middle Missouri Technical Institute of Cattle Farming either.
3) Bench strength? Who needs a bench? All you need are 11 (or maybe 14) players. Even the WNT can't find 14 good players. Seems like blaming it on the bench is an easier way of saying the starters just aren't THAT good. In other words, who needs a bench if you have 11 good players?

Anonymous said...

what's even funnier about that is that Tomass coached the lack bench strength at club last year.

Wasn't it six years ago when Minnesota when to 8v8 for U12 & U11 and 6v6 for U10 & U9? So next years U15's should be the age group that should start showing the benefits from "smaller sides = more touches". Does that translate into more great players or better overall play? Or both?

The game that won't happen AV vs Prairie Seeds. So the best we have is to look at common opponents and debate the value of such comparisons. Lakeville South vs. P.S on Sept 27th and L.S. vs AV on Sept 28th. I wish I lived in the Metro to catch them. So what are some score predictions? Not an AV. comparison, but a top 10 AA Edina 1-0 over St. Paul Academy and P.S. 8-0 over the same SPA.....

Anonymous said...

Doesn't mean much. AV also beat just beat 2 top ten AA teams 6-1 and 4-0 this week.

The Edina and SPA comparison has nothing to do with how they would match up otherwise you could say something ridiculous like...PS beat Minn. Edison 21-0 and Minn. South beat Edison 19-0 but Valley beat South 6-1 so Valley is better...Makes no sense if you get my drift. Does is really matter whos better between the two anyway? It's not like we're talking best ever or anything here.

Anonymous said...

Let's talk best ever then, who's your pick?

Anonymous said...

P.S. does not play by the rules, Apple Valley does.

Anonymous said...

AV last season hands down, no qeustion. They are the only team in the history of Minnesota to finish the season as champions without a loss or tie on their record. They outscored their opponents 131-7. They also finished the season with TWO players who won player of the year awards last season. Not even close.

Anonymous said...

9:58,
Enlighten us...what rules is Prairie Seeds breaking?

Anonymous said...

I've seen them all play. PSA 2010 would beat AV 2009 and AV 2010.

That's my opinion. But we'll never know. So nobody is wrong.

Anonymous said...

A good portion of the PSA roster doesn't even know when or where they were born! They could be a team of adult men and not high school boys!

Anonymous said...

don't get me wrong, I am not defending them, but

high school rules do not require you to be a 17 year old senior, last I heard you can be in to your second decade.

What I am curious about, is where did these boys play last year, and did they sit out a season for transferring or did they get approval to play from the MSHSL?

Anonymous said...

11:34am You are right. I thought I remember hearing a story awhile back about some 28 year old guy in Texas that never went to HS. He went back to HS and became their starting quarterback.
I guess the PSA men can play, but I'm curious too about where they played last year.

Mister Football said...

Their best player has been playing MYSA (Wings, Blackhawks) and ODP for years. He previously went to Armstrong. I believe he's in his 2nd year at PSA. He probably knows when and where he was born just as much as any player on Minnetonka or Apple Valley.

Why would these players not know their birth information?

Anonymous said...

They don't have valid birth certificates just like the president. Part of the big conspiracy to infiltrate and take over US soccer and the free world.

Can you say xenophobia.

Anonymous said...

12:33pm is right, maybe not about the President (no politics please) but about the PSA kids. They don't have valid birth certificates. They were born somewhere in East Africa and there is no record of their birth. They come over here with their mothers who can't remember what year or even what day they were born. Recent story in the news was concerning the triple murder in MPLS. The suspect said he didn't know how old he was, his mother thought he was under 16, but dental testing was done and he is atleast 17 or 18 years old.

A good chunk of PSA players also play for their high school coach ALL summer, a clear violation of the rules. Their best player is on his 3rd high school, at least. definitely something shady going on over there, especially considering the person who determines their eligibility is the athletic director at the school, who is also their head soccer coach.

mama mia said...

Regardless of shadiness, they are teenagers and they are better than your team. Maybe they ate a lot of Jolly Ranchers and didn't brush.

Why shouldn't players be able to play for any coach they choose? What are they trying to prevent?

If it truly was shady, wouldn't someone have done something by now?

Liberia is on the west coast.

First High School Rules prohibt coaches from coaching their high school players during certain major period of soccer season. Secondly, High School Rules have probibts player from changing school without sitting out for a year.

The Minneapolis murder suspect, his birth records says he is 18, he now saying he is only 16. As he took the place of a dead child place in the lottery to come to the united states. This bring up issues that have already been question regarding accuracy of birth records given by imigration.

He said that when the boy was 8 or 9, he was brought to the United States by the family of the real Mahdi Ali, a friend of Arrasi's who died."

Mama mia, being an immigrant or child of immigrants doesn't exempt them from rules of fair play. No one should get more opportunity than the teenagers who were born here to tax paying citizens.

Anonymous said...

Why do High School Rules prohibit coaches from coaching their high school players during certain major periods of the soccer season?

Anonymous said...

Because high school sports are an extension of the classroom and we all know that learning can only occur in a two week period before games begin, and/or during the week in a season so short that up to 4 games are played in a week.

These are allegedly academics making up these rules. Where is the intelligence?

Anonymous said...

Should they get less opportunity than the teenagers who were born here to tax paying citizens?

How are they getting more opportunity?

Do you not want immigrants here? Should Americans not be allowed to live in their country? We have a lot of teenagers living in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Owatuhgu Saiyam said...

Oh yeah, we should have restrictions to prevent kids from reaching their full potential. It needs to be equal.

Dental testing. And they should all have to carry id cards. And learn English at their own expense. (and wear hand me down soccer shoes).

give it a rest. They are kids looking for a chance to play.

I hope my Norwegian immigrant great grand parents were treated with more respect than what is evident on this blog.

Anonymous said...

I'm sure all Americans living abroad are fluent in the native tongue.

Anonymous said...

Your Norwegian immigrant great grand parents and my Swedish immigrant great grandparents came to the USA, worked hard, learned the language, built strong communities. The latest batch of immigrants from these war torn counties (sad), come to the USA just to get handouts. They don't want to work, they expect that we follow their customs, etc. Why do you think that France, Germany, Netherlands, etc are all clamping down on this and not allowing these people into their country. I don't care if they do come to this country, but they should have a job first, know English and for god sack know how many children you gave birth to and when!

Anonymous said...

I don’t think any reasonable person would argue that these or any teenagers should not have the same and equal opportunities. Any reasonable person would not say naturalized teenagers should get more opportunities than others. I find that comment somewhat disingenuous. What I think the main concern is that all the teenagers get the same opportunities. If it is ok for one group why is it not ok for next group?

As far as the dental testing goes, obviously there is a problem with some of the immigration documentation. Documentation in this case that the suspect himself has admitted that he and or his family falsified and is now trying to use that falsification to get out of being tried as a adult murderer. I personally, think we should agree with Ali or Khalid Farah Arrasi, deport him and everyone involved with the falsification of the immigration documents and be done with it.

BTW my immigrant grandfather lived in a barn as farm help from the age of 5 to 16. He did not receive a free education, he had no health care, he had no social services. So at this point I would say these immigrants and all immigrants in this country are being treated a whole lot better than my family was when they immigrated to the United States. So, before you start making acusation that we are treating people so much worse than our families were treated go back and look at American immigrant history. You maybe surprised to find out things are actually alot better now.

Anonymous said...

American's abroad aren't living on welfare and food stamps, getting free education and free medical care. Other countries would never allow that!
American kids should have more rights in this country than immigrants. And that brings me to soccer! Illegal immigrants should not be allowed to play in HS or in clubs. If their mother doesn't have any idea how many kids she gave birth to and on what day, they should not allowed to play soccer or any other sport.

Anonymous said...

When did illegal immigrants come into this discussion. I think all these kids are here legally and deserve all the same opportunities as every other citizen of the United States.

Anonymous said...

2:28pm. Bravo! My immigrant great grandfather also worked on a farm in North Dakota as a teenager. No free meals, education or medical care. He was grateful to be in the US. So he worked hard, learned English, saved his money. Eventually bought a small store and raised a family. Immigrants years ago were treated much worse than they are now. "Maybe all new immigrants need to go out and work on a farm the minute they step in this country."

Maybe you should too. Or are you given a free pass because your grandfather did something difficult?

Anonymous said...

Immigrants should work on a farm or in the coal mines of West Virginia. Might prevent a few of them from coming over here looking for all the free handouts. If you are a student of history you will know that a majority of your great-great grandparents did not get free handouts! They worked hard and appreciated every little thing they had.
Now back to soccer!

2:53pm. No free passes for anyone, American born or not! I'm guessing you must be one of those people that get free health care, education, food stamps, etc. You should have to go work on a farm and than you can play soccer at night. Some good old fashion farm work would make you even stronger for soccer.

Interesting documentary on a channel called Current from a show called Vanguard. It was referred to as both Soccer Slaves and/or Lost Boys of Soccer talking about the trafficking of young West African Boys from Ghana.

Talented young street soccer lads bought by coaches from their parents for youth teams. The coach them hopes to showcase them and sell them to agents who hope one of them is their lottery ticket in Europe. More often then not the kids do not catch on with known clubs and the agents leave them in Europe

Just thought it was time for something similar but different

First, I did work on the farm, in the potato house, pick rocks in the fields, and gathered eggs. I have a received a "free pass" because my grandfather did something difficult. No. I did Uncles on Normandy Beach, in the South Pacific as well as in the Korean War. Do I have cousin who were in Vietnam and even some who are now in Afghanistan. Yep. Are they or have we received free passes because of their services to this country. No. Do I have a job? Do I get dirty and work 10 to 12 hours a day. Yes. Do I and my family follow and obey the have rules or work with in the rules to make life better. Yes.

The problem as I see it is that some (not all) think that naturalized citizens of the United States have it so much easier than immigrants. Some (not all) think that immigrants are ungrateful, lazy and unproductive. All of which is untrue. The real issue here is if you’re an immigrant or not, we all need to play by the same rules.

The problem for some of these young men is that many before them have admitted to lying about their ages to receive benefits. The difference between a 14 year old and a 16 year young boy is significant. I have watched a 15 year old boy run a field, be on the national team, the regional team only to see them disappear after high school. Some of their problems are that they are receiving a poor education. Something that Prairie Seeds seems to want to address. I hope it works for them. However, MNHSL has rules that we all have to live by. We may not like them but breaking them just because we don’t agree with them would be what is called “cheating”. So, the question is Prairie Seed playing by the rules set out by MNHSL?

Anonymous said...

Funny how the topic was twisted by the crazy. In my original post, all I said was that they should not get more than kids whose parents pay taxes. I did not assert they should get less. Same rules for you and me, same opportunity, same challenges. If my son has to work after school to help the family tough luck, he better love the game or he will not last long. Meanwhile, if he were an immigrant, someone should give him a free ride? But somehow, immigrants "love" the game more. Bull!

Our country is failing because we don't respect these people enough to allow them to succeed on their own. While at the same time failing our taxpayers by spending on people who will not make our country stronger-most of them go back "home" eventually.

The psa players train year round under YD guidance, easy to prove just ask the kids they wont all lie, take IK for example played for YD on BHK team and Twin Stars last spring & winter, plus PSA training, violations.Almost all the kids were recruited to PSA by YD. Know 2 kids that left PSA last year and they have told me about there training and it violates MSHSL rules and there will be more if MSHSL takes a serious look. PSA is a good program but should not be in the MSHSL, they spit in the face of everyone that follows the rules. It is not the kids fault, but YD should be ashamed.

I have seen AV and PSA both play this year too.

Pure speculation - IMO I would pick PSA in a close one. The two styles of play are so contrasting. AV would not have faced a team of this much technical ability and athleticism with the ability to possess . I think AV's more physical play would disrupt PSA for a period of time and frustrate them.

It would be an extremely good match that will never take place.

However in a fantasy world of scheduling, I would say the PSA coach would be more willing to make this happen in some manner or form than Scanlon would. I think the AV players would have to beg him to try to make it happen if it could ever occur.

If PSA is going to be in the MSHSL that is great, just follow the rules, otherwise go the way of Shattuck, again PSA is a good thing, they should not be in the MSHSL because they dont follow the rules. There are already 3 coaches I know of with info holding on to it and plan on fileing with the MSHSL if it benifits there team. Which is a problem unto itself, poor sportsmanship unless you report it right away. Several big games tonight, though only one with two ranked teams:

#10AA Park/Cottage Grove at #6AA Stillwater, 5pm. Can the MTA studs beat the St. Croix studs?

Totino at #2A Benilde, 5pm. Totino should push them.

North Branch at #4AA Spring Lake Park, 5pm. High-scoring exurb versus surprising inner-ring team.

P.S. How can Mankato East be #1 in Class A? They have played NO ONE.

I think the AA rankings are fairly acurate, but some of the A stuff is wierd, PSA dispite there schools cheating should be first, but after that every one is a question, Benide, MPA, Como, Central, Humbolt, no one stands out, it seems atleast Central has played tuff teams but the rest are tuff to judge because they are not playing top teams. Is it hard to schedule tuff teams or do people dodge the best.

So when you don't follow the rules that everyone else has to live by, is it just because you want to play or is just because you want to win. Seems to me it is PSA that only wants to win. The other schools only want to play and are willing to follow the rules in order to play.

Lets change the subject. How about the Gopher Women's Soccer Team. There were a lot of people on this blog that said they were not going be very good. So far they look good with the only 1 loss.

Anonymous said...

Why would we change the subject to something that no one wants to talk about?

Anonymous said...

I agree with 3:02. Not a U Women's Team hater, but it's not a "hot" topic and there's no controversy. PSA is a good topic.

PSA sounds like a great team, but should it be playing other schools that are not following the same system? Not if it's going to blow even the better teams out of the water because it won't do PSA any good (other than its ego). Should it be playing SSM and other academies? Probably, if it wants to get better, push its players, and get a real reputation.

Anonymous said...

Is PSA a private school just like Breck, Blake, Benilde, Holy Angels, Totino, Cretin and Minnehaha?

What do they do that is different? Is it just that their players train too much?

"If it wants to get better, push its players, and get a real reputation." Is that why AV plays their creampuff non-conference schedule? That's not to boost their ego?

This all comes down to trying to restrict how much these minority boys on PSA practice. Unbelievable.

Anonymous said...

Equality for all! Why should a bunch of minority kids get to break the rules? Because they are a minority? I don't think so! PSA needs to follow the same rules as every other school no matter what their race is.
Unbelievable that you think PSA should get special treatment because they are a minority!

Anonymous said...

What rule have they broken?

Anonymous said...

Not a PSA hater here, but the team was kicking everyone's butt last year until it was determined that several players were ineligible for not sitting out a year after transferring. Brought the team back to earth playing with all freshmen. If it's true that the coach had inappropriate contact with the players during the past school year (i.e., coaching or training at any time before June 2010), the team will be in trouble.

Anonymous said...

But according to 3:46pm, since PSA is mostly a minority school they should be able to do whatever they want!
I don't know AV, I'll assume mostly white boys. For argument sake, what if someone said "because AV is mostly white, why can't they practice year around with their coach, not sit out after transferring, etc." Can you imagine the outrage!

1238 - Klinsmann would have been equated to a CEO ( not just a manager), the USSF his board of directors. Klinsmann was smart to state his requirements, as he did last time they talked, and not back down on what he felt was required to make his/our program successful. Good CEO's do not take control without having the ability to have the major say on how things need to operate.

USSF "suits " didn't want to give up their control of the puppet

PSA detractors are you sure you have all the information you need to say PSA is not playing by the rules or just going on hearsay? MSHSL does have waivers coaches can sign and get permission to coach in the summer if circumstances dictate a special need. Is that is your biggest beef? Or is it the transfer of players? Charter schools probably have special exemptions regarding transfers....I mean this is MN so how far fetch would that be?

If this team was not winning and pummeling schools it typically would have no right beating, no one would be uttering a word of dissent or filing a grievance.

Yes they should play by the same rules the rest of the HS have to, but lets make sure they are breaking the rules rather than maybe manipulating them which many public and private MN high schools also do.

I have little respect for the MSHSL but you don't think it raises red flags when a program likes this comes out of no where? I would think/hope all this has been already approved by the MSHSL rather than brazenly manipulated by the adults at the school

Stillwater is overrated
The predicted demise of Woodbury was premature.

1AA - Lakeville North
2AA - Eden Prairie
3AA - Eagan
4AA - Woodbury
5AA - Centennial
6AA = Wayzata
7AA - Duluth East
8AA - Elk River

Most of the same teams as last year. Edina will not upset EP this year, Duluth East is in over Anoka, and only Centennial and Elk River will have improved teams. LN, Eagan, Woodbury, and Wayzata are not as talented as last year.

I couldn't agree more with your whole post.

I have said for several years that Private and Charter schools should be in their own league. The playing field for them is far different than those for Edison, Brooklyn Center, and Fridley etc.... MNHSL only decided to change transfers rules when the big AA schools starting recruiting and getting more attention than the private schools.

I don't have a problem with what PSA is doing nor do I have a problem with what DeLaSalle and Breck do. Just do it to each other a let the kids that are playing for the love of the game to be able to play that game with out getting slaughter by a select team. It is not fun for anyone at that point.

Is it only me TomASS but after watching your video on the Soccer Slaves/Lost boys of Soccer. Do you worry that some of these boys/families are being promise something that can't be delivered? I look at PD from SSM, KP from St. Bernard's they are nowhere to be found. They don’t seem to be playing college soccer nor do they seem to be playing soccer at all. Do we have our own problem in MN of predatory coaches promising players D1 scholarship and professional tryouts and delivering little or nothing.

Mister Football said...

Why would Klinsmann coach the US if he can't select the roster?

Would you want to coach a team if the DOC and a bunch of dad's selected the roster?

What rule has PSA been proven to break?

What purpose does the June Coaching restriction serve?

Anonymous said...

Some of the previously mentioned private schools must know how to manipulate the transfer rules better than the publics. When 3 MN based players left SSM 2 years ago, the two that returned to their public schools had to sit out, while the one that went to one of those class A privates played the entire season.

tomASS said...

11:13 - regarding your last paragraph, I do not have any evidence that would lead me to believe that is the case.

However, after watching the documentary it is very apparent that our different cultures put different priorities and emphasis on soccer.

When you have one father who sells his son to a coach tell the reporter that if Essien and Eto'o had been doctors, lawyers, or accountants no one would have ever known who they were.

The father would have rather have his son be successful through soccer than through education. Very different cultural thought process.

Someone told me tonight that Current TV was created by Al Gore. I suddenly felt very ill and dirty.

TomAss

That is exactly what bothered me.
Does that same culture that so many have exclaimed as what is missing in US Soccer make these families and young men vulnerable to coaches/managers here in the US, Coaches and Managers who use them for their agenda’s that may not be in the player’s best interest.

I don't know the people involved at PSA. I know a nothing of St. Bernard’s; I know a bit about SSM. I believe they are all high quality schools, and yet here are two very talented young men, who are not receiving a college education playing soccer. Did these schools use these young men to advance their soccer programs and not provide them with a quality education? When looking back just at Mr. Soccer for the past three or fours years, you see a pattern. I hope PSA is trying to break that pattern and not take advantage of these young men as some of these schools seem to have done.

Anonymous said...

12:59am: Do you even know these two young men? Please don't make generalized statements about why they may not be playing college soccer and getting a college education. I don't know KP and so I would never make any assumptions or generalizations about him. I do know PD and what he's up to and I am not going to publish it here because it's nobody's business.

tomASS said...

Anon 817- anon 1259 did not make a statement about the young men. He/She asked a general question wondering about the system of soccer and the influences it has over cultures with soccer priorities. The young men were only referenced as possible examples to look at. They were used in the questioning of the system and it was not meant to judge them.

Anonymous said...

One girl who played for SSM last year is now leading Stillwater in scoring, without having had to sit out a year.

I believe that because SSM is not part of the MSHL, the transfer rule does not apply.

Anonymous said...

Anon 8:17 your right I don't know either of these young men personnel.

While you may feel that you are holding a higher standard by not saying what PD is doing as it is nobodies business. SSM didn't feel that it was nobodies business when they listed him as signing with Dayton. Lee College did feel that way when they signed him, ranking him right up there with former Lee NAIA All-American and now professional soccer player, Ricardo-Pierre Louis.. This is what I'm talking about, schools/clubs listing these young men as shining examples as to what families and young boys can do if only. At SSM particularly they love to parade out there list that PD is apart of to encourage families and players to leave their homes and spend large amounts of money on their program. In the documentary many of these young men and families who have fallen prey to these predatory managers keep silent because they are ashamed that they have not become high paid soccer players. This only enables recruiters to continue to prey on these families and young men. Is the same thing happening here in MN but to a lesser degree? Does the communities silence help perpetuate and expand the exploitation of these families? Have these two young men ended up in Morocco abandoned like so many others that were shown in the documentary? Did they sacrifice an education in order to become professional soccer players?

Prairie Seeds Academy is a MN charter school which means the state (you and I with our tax dollars) is funding the operation. If one of the main attractions is the soccer program (and it would appear to be since the athletic director/coach is a well known, highly qualified soccer professional) then there are many more similarities to SSM than a normal high school, but instead of an annual tuition of $35K being paid by the SSM parents, SSM endowments, SSM scholarships at PSA it is being paid by the MN taxpayer.

The reason IMO there isn't a louder outcry is that it is boys soccer which ranks about as low as it gets on the MN high school sports scene.

Imagine a "Rink Seeds Academy" or "Hardward Seeds Academy" where the AD and coach is a well-known local high school hockey coach or big time AAU basketball coach and recruited a majority of the top notch local talent - you don't think the uproar would get loud. Hopkins HS hears this every year regarding basketball, but their coach is not the AD nor does he coach them in the off-season.

IMO, regardless of whether they are breaking any rules we are all starting to go down a slippery slope.

MSHSL BYLAW 200-STUDENT ELIGIBILITY

208.00 NON-SCHOOL COMPETITION AND TRAINING(TEAM AND INDIVIDUAL SPORTS)

2. During the School Year, Prior To and Following the High School Sports Season:
D. A student may receive coaching or training including private lessons from a person who is not a salaried or non-salaried member of the student’s sophomore, B-squad, junior varsity or varsity high school coaching staff in that sport. Fees and expenses for non-school coaching, training or private lessons must be provided by the student or the student’s parent(s) or guardian(s) unless approved by the Board of Directors.
4. Summer Coaching Waiver:
A. The summer waiver period begins on June 1 and concludes on July 31.

So, if PSA's AD/coach is working with the boys over the winter/in the spring, the boys are in violation of the eligibility standard. I can see, though why coaches are holding their evidence in their pockets... first offense is two games or two weeks. If an opponent won't see PSA until the state tournament, no reason to get their hands dirty early.

I believe one reason people aren't tooting the horn for Minnesota Women's soccer is that it is predominantly a team full of players from Bangu/MTA. I think 7 or 8 of the starters played at Bangu or MTA at some point in their youth soccer careers.
My kid played at SCV and we've also had more than a few players at the "U" recently.

YD is breaking the rules and has been all along, again it is not the players fault but they will pay when people submit there claims and facts are revealed, if this were Hockey Football or Basketball the schools sports would be shut down and YD fired.

YD was listed originally as BHK coach, then just before state cup his name was not on the MYSA website, rather VA (of St. Olaf) was listed. Then it changed again and it listed his son as head coach, but YD was at all the MYSA PRmr League games. So, officially he wasn't the coach but he was there.

I don't think the lack of interest in Gopher soccer is due to having several Bangu players. More due to a general lack of interest in women's college soccer period. A few parents will post on this blog, but that is about it.

I wouldn't have pegged MV over WBL, though I did hear that WBL was beaten up physically by Eagan and thus had some key players out. If WBL is healthy come crunch time, they probably battle Stillwater for the section title. Next year will be WBL's year though.

I would have taken EV over Jeff. Saw EV physically dismantle East Ridge last week, and they (EV) are now my pick to win their section. ER doesn't have the athletes and will need to rely on heart and tactics to get out of 4AA.

Thought Stillwater would have handled Park easier, and thought ER would have gotten by Forest Lake by a larger margin.

If the games get played tonight, here are my picks for the bigger games:

Jeff over Rosemount 2-0
Eastview over Eagan 3-1
Woodbury over ER 2-1
EP over Wayzata 2-0

And in my wild cards, an Andover Centennial tie 1-1, and a Hopkins Edina 0-0 tie.

My semi-revised section winners:

1AA - Lakeville North
2AA - EP
3AA - Eastview
4AA - Stillwater/WHS/ER/WBL
5AA - Centennial/Moundsview
6AA - Wayzata
7AA - Duluth East
8AA - Elk River

Rankings:

Tough to argue with them this week. Though they all go out the door come mid October, I see Eastview, East Ridge, and Moundsview all with chances of cracking the rankings for the next go round. With big wins against ER and WBL, MV is rolling.

Get the rain gear out.

Great games. Big rivalries. Players all know each other. And this year, really evenly matched. If it keeps raining and the fields get sloppy, probably better for Eagan and Souths' direct style.

East Ridge gets it done- 3-2

Eagan's keeper play is the difference in a win- 3-1

North by a pair- 2-0

bonus pick-

EP is too much for WAY- 2-0

"Bad soccer teams?"

So the same quality of opponent that AV and Mankato are playing?

I suppose it all means nothing.

Wow. Fergus Falls squeaked by Little Falls 3-2 last night. Who saw that coming?

Do Fergus Falls and Little Falls even know what soccer is?

A good game in girls class A will be Rogers against Monticello. Rogers is 10-0 and ranked #5. Montincello is 9-1 with a loss to Park CG. May determine who to look for out of Section 5.

I'd love to see the Woodbury-East Ridge game tonight. When and where? MA takes a good team and makes it bettter. Woodbury is talented and well coached, also. Stillwater is such a waste. There is great talent but poor coaching. I think the assistant runs the team and they have consistently gotten worse as the season progresses. Pure determination by some of their stars has kept them alive. If Rosemont has the bulk of Tobie's players, I'd have to favor them over the teams in that area.

WBL had 4 starters out for the MV game and lost a 5th during the game. Losing to a good MV team under those circumstances is not surprising.

Woodbury - East Ridge is currently still on, at least no cancellation notice received, at East Ridge High School field.

TCFire team is a USClub Soccer Team of players who have opted out of high school soccer and some who live in Wisconsin. We had a fall team at this age last year as well.
