Similar to last year, 10-12 teams have a chance to win state at AA and A. Many good teams but no dominant team that will steam roll into state. This should be one of the most competitive tournaments is quite some time.

6:24, they didn't have less expereinced guys in the middle. They had one guy marking Whitney the whole game, and that didn't change. The defensive assignments didn't change. Nothing changed, except WB and his marker were no longer in the middle.
Osseo was bound to score. They were too good. The header was scored by a guy at full run from outside the box. He scored inside the 6. Tough to defend. Good offense. The goalie had no chance on either goals.
I did see the goalie sitting on the field crying after the game. Good for him. Players that lose and shrug it off are weak. I don't want my guys to be happy after they lose. Remember that next year when you lose to MG or CP or whoever your rivals are. (I saw a lot of seniors on the field for Osseo.)

Another year another squad. Last year Osseo lost in the first round of section. Players choked or insufficient coaching but they must felt the same pain like yours now.

Osseo must have got a lot of your gooses around here. All I can see is how to beat Osseo and they do this they do that. Is Osseo that good that make you think that hard? Too much traffic here on Osseo. Is this blog only for them? We don't even mark WB and see what he's made up.
QRF and goal differential or goals scored dont mean anything. You can't run up scores in the classic or lake conf.
The number one stat is if you play in the Lake or Classic Lake. 9 of the last 10 winners are from the classic lake or lake.
No team from the far south or up north have won or for that matter played in the final. Those teams complain about the rankings at state. Come up or down and win a state tourney or come up or down and beat someone who is always good like Valley or Wayzata.
No team from either city conference has won a state championship.
If South, Southwest or Central played in the Lake they would be middle of the pack every year and maybe every once in awhile they would make a run.
Like Central a few years ago. Everyone was talking about these three teams. South lost first game of playoffs, Southwest lost first game, Central won and then lost to WDBY, who lost to Stillwater, and Stillwater will lose to Jefferson so it tells you where that section stands.
When demographic changes this stat will change as well. You can count on that.
Central dominated Woodbury in that game. They did everything but win the game. More power to Woodbuy. The won on an excellent free kick by Miller. But Central were certainly better than Woodbury, could have gone toe to toe and possibly beat Stillwater.
Central, the first team to play in a State Championship, came in 2nd place in (I think) 04. Beating EP on the way.
Your definitely right. The conferences are weaker. But look at the non-conference games that Central and SW play every year. All top notch competition. I know Central usually does very well against all these team.
I don't know why someone from the Lake or Classic Lake is talking smack.
They have to know their success is a result of numbers (see EP and Wayzata). Look at their football programs. They have more athletes. Even they know their teams don't play a better brand of soccer (see AV). It's interesting that the 2 best players in MN (RG and DF) are from the city, the best player in HS soccer this year is from Osseo (WB), and the best player from the Lake or Classic Lake was expelled for poor behavior (RS).
So the 3 most talented players in the state aren't in the Lakes and the best player in the Lakes couldn't finish the season. That's something to be proud of.

I love how Stillwater gets no respect. They will surprise.
Stillwater is the biggest school remaining and they've been good for 15 years. How will they surprise?
I wonder if South or Southwest wouldn't do better than middle of the pack in a surburban conference. I know that playing tough physical games every week makes for a better team come play-offs. I think they would do fine.
Mpls. and St.Paul have both had some great teams. I played club with Kareem Aal years ago, who was an excellent player for South when they played in the dome.
Perhaps the best city teams would have benefitted from playing a surburban schedule and finally won it all.

People keep hating Osseo, but how many games have they lost this year? It's pretty cool that they've gotten this far with what people call a weak coach, weak goalkeeper, and a weak defense. That Mr. Soccer guy must be that much better than anything in the Lake.

From the recap on that blog, did Lakeville's only goal come off a 45-yard free kick? That's almost from half field!
First, that's not very much offense if that's the only way Lakeville could score. Second, even Roberto Carlos can't score from that far out. Third, sounds like WB's technical skill and "zigzagging" runs were too much for that Lake team to handle.

Lakeville only won 3 games in the Lake Conference, the only teams they beat were at the bottom of the standings.
For Osseo to be losing to Lakeville at the half tells me the top 3-4 teams in Lake will be stronger than Osseo.

AV vs St.Louis Park tonight should give taletell sign in how Lake teams will handle other type of game they've been used in playing like bootball. AV, Jefferson, Lakeville North all bootball style.
The contrast of playing styles was very inherent to see last night between Osseo and Lakeville North. Osseo in control and short passing while Lakeville North skipped the midfield and pressured the back with long balls.
If HS teams can play like Premier teams in summer traveling leagues, games are much more better to watch and appreciate IMO.
just becasue a team plays more direct does not make it bootball. Jefferson changes its play if when the play at Bloomington Stadium. Very few teams in the history of HS soccer can connect 10-12 passes on a bumpy and narrow field. Jefferson does not play bootball, do they smack it down the field occassionally yes. It is smart if a team varries its attack. How about the teams last night playing with a deep sweeper. You talk about a poor style.

I'm not sure Osseo should use beating a 12-6-2 team in the first round as a barometer of what's to come. No doubt deserve to be at state, but a lot of soccer yet to be played. The Bloomington Jefferson game against LVN was in pouring rain...a great neutralizer. Anything can happen...remember Elk River Orioles? I'm not yet a believer, but I sure like the way W.B. plays the game. The committee no doubt got the right man for the Mr. Soccer award.
Don't forget Armstrong beat Osseo too!

No team in the history of HS soccer can connect 10 passes together on a narrow, bumpy field.
Players don't play direct. They play bootball. They aren't good enough to settle the ball and pass it on the ground. They get nervous when the ball is bouncing and then they kick it. Coaches don't put emphasis on restraining this. While this continues, it will be painful for the average student fan to watch, resulting in empty stands and low ticket sales. In my mind, the players ask for the empty stands.
I said WB had Mr. Soccer in the bag in my post on 9/16/08. Get a clue.

Like it or not, Osseo will even be more fun to watch in the dome because weather will not be a factor and they are getting used to playing on turf which will even emphasize their speed and control.The switch to the new goalie(big, inexperienced but athletic) will pay off as long as their midfielders contol the game and counter from midfield.SLP plays a similar type of possession and counterattacking and so does Stillwater so you have two contrasting styles tonight which will give us a better idea how the final four will shape up.WB showed last night it is not all about scoring.Great vision,deft touch and an unselfish player!

I've seen my share of futbol through the years and even though Osseo does indeed have some weaknesses, once they get the ball in the attacking third, there is no one in the state as dangerous as they are. Speed, quickness, creative combination play and they all seem to be on the same page.
Their new keeper is extremely athletic though he may be a bit weak positionally. He needs to learn to take a step back on long balls driven high or above his head. He always steps forward first.
I'd say that Osseo is my favorite right now. They just have a special energy about them.

WB played great last night, I was their and the kid was crawling on the ground (falling) and he stayed with the balled while a kid was hacking away at him. He came back to the ball nice and was very unselfish. I think the teams that are playing at Hopkins tonight have a very good chance at winning it all whoever it may be. But all i have to say is that the team that finds away to get more than 3 good shots on osseo's kepper will beat them.. The goalie dropped the ball almost every single time it was shot at him and not to mention lakeville shot a 35-40 YARD FREE KICK WAS SCORED WITH 4 SECONDS LEFT IN THE 1ST HALF.
Bloomington and A.V, on the other hand should win but SLP scares me cuz they play so hard and they'll put up a hell of a fight against A.V... Bloomington is so skilled, many of there kids can play anywhere on the field which help the whole team. A.V. or Bloomington vs. Osseo in the final would be spectacular, personally i would love to see the skill of B.J. versus Osseo's. Best of luck to all teams, and let the best teams win!!

I just listen to te sound bites on Inside Soccer. Is their starting goalie, ineligible? If he is, 1)why is he ineligible? 2)did he play? It sounded as if he was ineligible but they played him for a few minutes anyway?
If you are referring to the Osseo game, the former starter came in because the goalie was injured momentarily and had to take a breather.Osseo's starting goalie had allowed 27 goals before being replaced by this bigger but athletic kid who has allowed 7 goals in 7 games. Like someone had pointed out, he has raw skills but has certainly stopped the bleeding for Osseo. He came up with some big saves but also dropped the ball numerous times so you take what you can get with an experienced kid. He does fill the goalmouth and can cover a large area because of his athletic skills.

SLP is not an easy team to score on. AV might have been "better," but they didn't win the game. Looking good for next year, as AV has many returning players.

I'll concede that Osseo has week defending. I've seen it with my own eyes. So what? Good for them--they still keep winning. If they had better defenders, they would destroy all comers. SLP has good defense and keeper, with limited scoring.
Funny, SLP (small, not sexy) lost or tied little this year, yet no one rates them. Interesting. And Osseo is mostly Liberian, so people aren't too interested in that either.
By dominate, do you mean they kicked the ball really hard, really far and had fast guys run after it? I don't know if Scanlon can teach any other tactics. A far superior coach, with decent talent, out coached the other coach. And his player followed the game plan to a win. Congrats to SLP!

As an AV fan I was very impressed with them this season, they lost a ton of talent from the previous two years teams and still made it back to the tourney. They had very little support from any of the seniors and their top 8 point getters this season were juniors or sophomores. For what was supposed to be a "down" season for AV I have to say congrats to the boys for playing their hearts out and they should be very good again next year.
Okay this is how limited of Scanlon knowledge. #1 is the garbageman which means he doesn't mark anyone at all and picks off any ball playing by his up front defenders. So Chato puts one guy next to #1 and AV has 2 defenders right next to each other. #1 very seldom attacking so he always has 2 defenders guarding 1 forward in the middle. Even in the dying momemnt of the game, these two defenders standing there scratching their butts. There's much more to say how dumb of AV strategy but I'll hold off for now.

I would love to have those youth years again and I would have done the exact thing! They were trying to cementing the MG spirit rock. What kind of dumb stuff these seniors thought of. They tried not once but twice. The first time they had problems with mixing cement. HAHAHAHHA!!! KIDS! I LOVE IT!!!
I guess they forgot one ingredient like sand to mix with cememt. HAHAHAHAH!!! KIDS!!! All were caught and served 3 days suspension. Damn funny with kids.

With suspension, they cannot be on school ground and property which includes practice and play games with the team. One suspension is over, they all had to go through the re-entrance interview. People, it's water under the bridge for these kids now. The kids are smart but you know kids can do real stupid things but it's doggone funny what they can think of next.
If you all were at the Osseo vs Lakeville North game, last 5 minutes Osseo GK were peppered with shots and he save 3-4 pointblank shots. The shots were 22 to 16 in favor of panthers. Not saying Osseo GK is great but he's like any other GK out there. Average at the most in our adult standard I'm sure. If Osseo defense is weak then how come teams can't score more than one per game on them since they've changed to the new GK.

Read a little more closely. The comment from 5:32 was they don't rely on "ONLY" athleticism, meaning they've been well coached in HS and with their club teams and in addition to be athletic know how to possess the ball and play the game.
If the refs let Jefferson play like the thugs they were last night, no one will beat them. Great thug strategy by a thug coach to use their size advantage over Stillwater's speed advantage. One of Stillwater's amazing freshmen was creamed in the box late in the game by Thug #2.
Jefferson was the better team last night...too bad their coach lacked confidence in his boys' abilities and had to make them play north suburban (i.e., thug) soccer.
St. Louis Park will be man-handled all over the pitch, and the BJ goons will be all over WB and the Liberians in the championship.

Not sure what game you were watching but not even a caution in the game. A couple of hard tackles. Jefferson was bigger and stronger and yes faster too.
They don't need to be sorry for that. I watched them for the first time last night and they look like the favorites to me. Coached lack confidence in the teams ability?? Please explain. North Suburban thug soccer?? What are you talking about? The coach is a thug?? Come on.
If anyone should have had the PK last night it was Jefferson #6 who cut in and beat a kid and the kid was on the ground and hit the ball with his hand so he could not get a shot off. The best player on the field was #5 I think that is the Gilmer kid. If you were talking about his complete domination in the air and when he crushed that kid on the header that is not even close of being a foul.

at the end of the day all the teams kick the ball all over the place.
60 yd wide field does not help possession and the fact that the kids are nervous

If SLP starts the game like they did againsT AV w 3 up top, BJ will eat up their midfielders (game over)That was the only time AV had those chances off set plays and throw ins.Both teams should be able to put their speed and skills to run their counter attacks which clearly AV was incapable off.(Boot and scoot)BJ may have the edge in size and physical play but it will still be an entertaining match.If Osseo takes care of CR(new goalie since they first met 3-3)I think it will be Osseo and BJ in the finals.The final 4 appears to be at least comprised of teams with skill and speed which should translate to an exciting championship run.Good luck to all!

Stillwater had more fouls in the game then Jefferson and that is because Jefferson had more possession. So to say Jefferson plays bootball you did not see the match and to say Jefferson has a bunch of thugs is crazy. No cautions in the game and Jefferson has two fouls in the first half and 8 in the game.
None of you know what you are talking about. I told you knuckle heads at the beginning of the season that Jefferson was loaded and would win it all if the coach just got out of the way. He inherited all this talent. He didn't have anything to do with their development.The best thing the coach can do is just go perch himself at the top of the stands and read a book and let the kids play.

His knowledge of the game is not gender biased so his expectations from his teams have always been hard nosed soccer which may seen too phyicial at times. Can't blame him since he has seen what it takes to be successful at the regional/national level regardless of gender.None of the remaining final four goalies are deal breakers like Ryan Vint so the team that wins will have to dominate the middle of the field.

You are right Storlien had very little to do with the teams development, but no HS coach can do much with development becasue the players have more time to get better during the club season. The HS season is 8 weeks long. The Jefferson team is one of the most organized HS teams I have seen play and that is a credit to very good coaching. The Jefferson program has experienced its best seasons in the history of the school under his leadership. If they win it this year it will be becasue of great players and great coaching. If you know Storlien he will say becasue of the great players.
Storlien made his mark coaching boys club soccer way before girls club soccer. He had a team of all Cottage Grove boys win the State Cup and go to Regionals. He coached a lot of good boys club teams
before the girls club teams.
People are saying BJ aren't thugs because there weren't any fouls or cautions...the reffing was horrible in the game, with the ref ignoring several major fouls and calling several touch fouls.
BJ was the better team...it's too bad their coach felt they had to play like they did. They will whup any of the remaining small teams if refs continue to allow them to play that way. CR is the only remaining team capable of playing that way, IMO.
And to say a guy is a storied soccer coach in Minnesota is like me saying my kid is the best high-school hockey player in Florida. B.F.D.

Not an AV poster but have seen them play, a great goalie is a very large over-statement, he is an average goalie and to say they are the four fastest players is ridiculous because they are not and it's true they really did not do alot for that team. I do agree though, we can talk about how good they will be when state is over.
You are right Mn soccer is not Dallas or SOCAL. DS has done very well against those teams at the club level. He has an A license, a NSCAA Premier, won at every level he has coached, does more coaching education than anyone, has two masters degrees, won more club championships than any coach in MN club history in two genders, won a state championship at jefferson and coach of the year by his peers, was the pres of the coaches association, on staff with Region 2 for a long time, coaches the Lightning to the playoffs, helped the Thunder turn around the season, and besides all that he is a really good guy who has helped more kids than anyone in MN club soccer history.
He is a good friend but even better person, anyone who rips him does not know him or is upset with him.

But lets be honest here...anyone bashing him on this blog does it because they bash anyone and everyone and everything associated with Bangu/MTA.
It's just more from the posters who have been doing this for years.

Story is, Maplegrove students came over and painted the rock in front of Osseo H.S. Oldest h.s. goofball rivalry type prank around. So then Osseo kids go over and paint the rock in front of Maplegrove H.S. The difference was, Maplegrove H.S. caught the kids on surveillance video. The kids was busted and served his suspension and was back in time for the playoffs, just as the story said at Inside MN Soccer.
As someone else wrote here, the new keeper at Osseo is actually a pretty good forward, but he is an extremely good athlete. Positionally he has a lot to learn. Unlike someone wrote above, he didn't drop everything that came his way, but he did drop a few. He's not a keeper by trade but is filling in admirably at this point and he has been training as a keeper all season.
SLP goalie is pretty good. He made a save against South on a very well placed header going high in the side net. Keeper came from no where and pushed it away. Saved the game for SLP.
The Osseo/MG vandalism is so not funny! Why anyone would think to encourage this kind of behavior with responses like "the first time they had problems with mixing cement. HAHAHAHHA!!! KIDS! I LOVE IT!!!" are beyond me. Was a police report filed? If there hasn't been a police report filed school officals may find themselves answering a few more embarassing questions.

I'll be at the dome at 10:00 this morning and if the press box has internet,which I believe it does, I'll be filing game reports after each game as well as audio reports from players and coaches. That's the plan for now. We will see what happens when I get there.

Excellent, great coaching, by a great coach (minus all of the licenses that money can buy listed above for DS) won with what most believe are inferior players. To top it off, SLP dominates the game and BJ coach shows inability to make any adjustments! Perfect finish! SLP will win it all.
What kind of adjustments do you make when you're up 1-0 for 50 minutes and then tied to a shootout.
You're clueless. It was a good game between 2 good teams and 2 good coaches. That's why it went to a shootout.

I agree with 7:49. A garbage/scrappy goal is all BJ could muster. Uninspirred play, poor marking on set pieces, disorganized, hardly any good chances on goal where SLP dictated the game and created many more chances. It almost looked like the coach might have told the players, "don't worry, just show up and we'll win." Perhaps some of that arrogance previous posters have referred to.
terrible offsides call on a BJ goal. The SLP goalie did play incredible in PKs, and the BJ final kicker was the one who sent them to state..game NOT his fault at all, BJ boys seemed tired..but all of you out there rubbing it in their faces please be quiet..these boys had an incredible year!
I don;t think anybody is after the boys, all the negative comments are directed at coach.

The boys have no control over fans..and all that was said was that they would be a state contender/favorite..and on this blog MANY had them picked to win. So please don't rub an unfortunate loss in their faces when they really have lived up to much of the hype.

Osseo 4, CR 1. WB might be hurt? Ahmad Bah--Junior, 3 goals for Osseo. Osseo gaolie didn't look all that bad, with a few decent saves. The game didn't feel 4-1, but closer than that. CR had to go for it, and Osseo only plays offense. Goal by Hoang might have been the one to seal the deal.
DS is over rated as a coach.
He has no clue when it comes to trying to generate offense. None of his teams can score.
DS has always overworked his players. Run nationals til you drop."nobody will out condition my team" THEY WERE A TIRED TEAM.
He was out coached and beaten by an inferior team. AGAIN
When will people realize this guy is nothing but a gym coach.
The players carried him all year. Don't blame the players,blame a poor coaching job.

You have no idea about what DS does with his players. They did conditioning one time this year.
He does not overwork his players. In my opinion he should have ran them more during the season. 2nd his Tsunami Sota team scored a bunch of goals. If it were so easy to coach in 4 regional club finals and 2 natioanl finals why dont more people do it. You don't even know him, he has two masters degrees and have never taught one class of PE. The guy is a class act who is a great coach. Why don't you ask some of his players. Plus ask his peers. You have no clue. The BJ team had a great season, they had not had a winning season in three years.

DS teams zone on corners. Get a clue. Did you see the man marking on SLP's defensive corner early in the game? Jefferson ran a pick for Gilmer and Harry made a great save. That is an adjustment. Watch the game and get a clue.
Not one BJ parents said congrats to SLP fans. Fricking arrogant people and talked like they're God given people and no one else can be better than them. Well God has shown them the other side and it's HELL!
Now I can't wait for these BJ people to shut the hell up and never to return.

After seeing lakeville,Apple Valley, and BJ play against skilled teams that know how to possess and counterattack in a very organized manner, it is clear that this boot and scoot style(lake conference) is not suited for the big and wide metrodome field. In the second half of the St Louis Pk game, BJ was completely outplayed and outshot by simple touches that allowed SLP to have some real great chances to end it in regulation time.BJ'S only chance was a shoot out but they were so tired(chasing the ball around) that the SHOOTOUT was a disaster for BJ.OSSEO may be too much for SLP in the finals but at least, you will have 2 skilled teams in the championship match.It should be a very close match!
