'08 MN D3 Soccer - MIAC, UMAC and UofM
OK the UofM men's team is club, but I had a request to include them in this years thread. I should also mention the growing talent level at UofM-Morris, who I believe are the only public men's D3 program in MN. The MIAC should be competative again. On the Men's side I will guess the top four will include Gustavus, Augsburg, St. Olaf and St. Thomas or St. Johns. Sorry, I don't know much about the ladies programs.

Kind of tough for St. Thomas and Gustavus to win the rest of their games when they play each other.
AUG gave up an own goal to CSS...not a good result for them at all, but doesn't hurt them.
GAC loses to Luther last night...so now they really can't win all their games from here on out. They are effectively eliminated from Pool C chance with that result.
Morris and Scholastica are Pool B teams, but have no chance with weak schedules and no 'quality' wins (wins against top 10 teams).
MIAC Games remaining for top 4 in MIAC:
GAC: STO and UST
CAR: HAM and STO
UST: STO and GAC
AUG: SJU and MAC
If I was to bet on who would be #1 at this time I'd pick Carleton based on having the easier schedule of teams with just 1 loss.
GAC must beat UST to win it.
AUG could sneak in.
It will be an interesting finish no matter what happens.

Hutton is an exceptional talent. He's the most dangerous attacking player in MIAC I've seen this year, great instinct and his speed gives defenders fits.
The freshman at Carleton, Wills, is very good. Bobby Phillips is also a stud.
Zietlow from St Olaf also a very nice player.
The 2 big guys from SJU, Horst and Lowell are also tough. Why SJU can't do better with the talent they have is still a mystery.
If Gorecki from Macalester wasn't injured he'd be in this group too, probably at the top.
Carleton has four forwards, including two freshmen, that are interchangable. No superstars, but all very good. That may be what gets them over the top as their defense has always been very good.
Seems like Augsburg is still in the running too?

Augsburg is slipping, slipping, slipping away. Don't count out St. Johns yet. If they beat AUG and AUG slips up (loss or tie) against MAC, who is hot right now, AUG is out and SJU is in. Carlton is already in and UST will be in with 2 wins in their last 4 games. Should be a great last 11 days of the season.
BTW, Zietlow is better than Hutton. He scores all his goals from the middle while controlling the game and stopping the counter. He should be player of the year in the MIAC, hands down. Don't get me wrong, Hutton is very, very good.
CAR back on top, but plays a tough Wartburg today. On road after long bus trip spells upset. That would really hurt their standing if they don't win the conference playoff. Still think any of the top four or five can win the playoffs.
Who does Zietlow play for?
zietlow plays for olaf ad definitely deserves more credit for his team doing so well. he plays really well in the middle even tho hes small and scores lots of goals
Where is Augsburg slipping to? They are 6-2 and in command of a playoff spot...actually could still win the conference if St. Olaf wins out and UST drops 1 pt. Long shot, yes...but slipping is a bit ridiculous

They come out tomorrow for Div. III. NCAA Regional Ranking is the 'real' ranking that determines selection into the NCAA Tournament.
My guess is the MIAC will have three teams in there - Carleton, Augsburg, and maybe St. Thomas (huge win over Loras).

First I'll address someone referring to Carleton's field as "EPL quality". lol far from it, it appears decent but having played on it for 4 years I can tell you it is horrible. Very choppy, uneven, holes everywhere, horrible footing etc... It is however a very scenic field.
Someone asked how far a MIAC team has advanced. I was lucky enough to be there in Greensboro, NC when Gustavus Adolphus reached the national championship in 2005. Losing to Messiah who is a perennial powerhouse in D3.
Regarding how national playoffs work, the format is the same as most NCAA tournaments. 64 teams, single elimination, seeding 1-16.
There are 3 different "pools" for the tournament. Pool A is for conference qualifiers, or the winner of each conference tournament (or regular season in some cases) Pool B is for at-large bids similar to the NCAA basketball tournament. Pool C is for independent schools not associated with a conference or schools within a conference who's winner does not receive an automatic bid. (Morris, CSS, UC Santa Cruz etc...)

ust dominated play hitting 6 posts and st marys had one shot one goal which was a breakaway...the box score says hutton and jungwirth didn't play and a lot of other starters only played minimal, i think the coaches thought it would be an easy win and played underclassmen to get them some time...yet another coaching error dropping ust out of the title race (still a horrible loss though)
ust still has a chance at a share of the title if they win and Carleton Loses. also, if you look at their team it is dominated by underclassmen. there aren't many seniors to work with, so you need to give the coaches a break with that as well
CAR has started five seniors nine or more games and UST has started four seniors nine or more games
CAR also has five freshman that have played in more than 10 games, and UST has three.

it seems like augsburg is kinda getting the better side of the deal here..they get to travel to washington and play a solid whitworth team..and then if they win that game they get to go play in california..CAR has to play at home with a disguisting field and weather conditions..any predictions of results for the AUG and CAR matches?

Yes - they get a long trip, but they're not in it for a vacation.
Platteville will dispose of Wartburg 2-0, and then it should be a great game with CAR. I believe it will be the stronger Platteville offense against the stingy CAR defense with Platteville prevailing 1-0, primarily due to field conditions. Game should be played on artificial turf because field will be a mess by the time the CAR women get done on Thursady. Still a terrific season for CAR.
Anything could happen with AUG. They played a terrific game against CAR in the championship game and if they bring the same intensity and offensive opportunities out West, I would not be surprised if they won a couple games.
Continued success to the Auggies, I'm sure Greg will have them prepared for today but a game on Sunday versus a a quality Redlands team will be tough. Temperatures on Sunday will be 87 and sunny and I'm headed back to the Twin Cities.

Carleton also advances to next round of Sweet Sixteen with a 1-0 shutout win.

all conference selections were a joke not having defender Jack Boller from CAR on the first team instead of Justin Egleseder from AUG. Boller held team together for two thirds of the year while robert carlton was injured.
