Men's D1 Soccer

This year's incoming D1 freshmen class from MN was very small. But the MN men are well represented at D1 programs including: Butler, Brown, Creighton, Marquette, UW-GreenBay, UW-Madison, UW-Milwaukee, Western Illinois and others.

  1. No one is going to green bay madison milwaukee or western illinois. If I am wrong let me know but i'm 99 percent sure they all backed out. But Spencer from edina is going to Columbia

    ReplyDelete
  2. Who is Spencer? I think MNFUTBOL was talking about existing players. Just a guess, but I think Butler, Marquette, Milwaukee, Marquette will be a little better than last year Brown, Madison, Creighton, Green Bay a game or two worse.

  3. 12:26 edina parent trying to make edina sound better and have no clue about college soccer. and i totally agree with 5:02

    ReplyDelete
  4. 5:02 must be the one who does not know D1 soccer. Spencer is good player and good student. He is going Ivy League D1 and we must pass the kudos. Not an edina parent but the kid did it. He plays for MNT B18

    ReplyDelete
  5. Then congrats to Spencer Duhaime. He is indeed on the the Columbia roster and joins fellow MN player Bayode Adafin (Rochester, MN)

    ReplyDelete
  6. Columbia is coached by former Thunder player Kevin Anderson and men's team also has Peter Morice out SPA. Mid level Ivy League team that could surprise teams as Kevin has one year under his belt and considered by many as up-and-coming DI coach. He came from Boston College which had great success.

  7. the only reason you dont know who spencer is is because your kid has never played at a high level(like spencer)of soccer. If you play on premier teams you know who else plays as well...sorry your kid sucks

  8. He is a defender for the best team in state. Calm down he is a good player with good grades. Well done kid.

  9. this is off-topic but ...can anyone tell me who is currently on staff at SSM? I heard that Chris Brunt, Carl Craig and Mike Madigan are no longer with SSM..Thanks

    ReplyDelete
  10. 12:22 you are correct...I don't think Tim Carter is a joy to work for, is my understanding...

    ReplyDelete
  11. Where did the former coaches go from SSM go?

    ReplyDelete
  12. Carl Craig is the girls coach at Richfield High

    ReplyDelete
  13. Wow, big shake up at SSM. Wonder if it had anything to do with the poor performances at State Cup.

    Back to the topic....
Spence is a great defender and should have probably been Mr. Soccer. Didn't have the hype machine that Osseo and WB had going for him. Probably one of the biggest mess up for Mr. Soccer in recent times.

WB is playing D1 where????? Take a look at IMS and you can see the Osseo media machine is already cranking up.
    Sincerely...Not a Edina Parent

    ReplyDelete
  14. monasterio had like 4 goals and 3 assists all year. people have different reasons for picking mr. soccer players every year. there can be debates about it each year

    ReplyDelete
  15. So any scholarships offered for D1 or D2 mens players from MN?

    ReplyDelete
  16. Haha Whitney is pretty good. Its hard to say it was stupid. If you don't agree thats one thing but its not like they gave it to some random kid.

  19. Mister Soccer8/25/09, 3:13 PM

WB was more than deserving for Mr. Soccer in 2008. He's a good player.

Didn't Osseo win the title 4-1? Seems like their media machine had reason to hype them up.

Good players on good teams who are relatively known in the MYSA community is the recipe for Mr. Soccer.

PY will be Mr. Soccer and IK will be Metro POY for 2009.

    ReplyDelete
  20. issac kahnah probably will be...and how are u saying whitney didnt deserve it, he would make your son look like a fool once he runs circles aroud him...why do people always have something bad too say about people who are good at what they do??

    ReplyDelete
  21. Lets be honest Whitney had a lot of help from a lot of really talented players at Osseo.
    They made him look good.
I am not saying he is not a talented player, but the team that surrounded him made him look good.
Osseo was stacked last year, talent was the gift they had.

  23. IK will only be a JR so he wont win mr. soccer and PY is class A so he wil get that but I say class AA will be a player from Apple Valley cause they will be the best team all year, possibly BJ cause he rock solid on D and first team all state guy last year, or DR who could easily have 25-30 goals this year

  24. Brent Kallman is on the roster at #2 ranked Creighton. He was a center midfielder for the MTA U18 team

    ReplyDelete
  25. Trent Senske who played for Bangu/MTA also plays at Creighton. Trent is a senior this season.

    ReplyDelete
  26. Bunbury is at Akron and they traditionally have a solid team.

  27. Isaac isn't playing in the high school league...some charter school that is adding an "academy" program...I think it's Noble Academy

good job PY, you are the best and good luck in your HS season! go TG!

    ReplyDelete
  29. BJ defender from AV will not win it this year. He is good but he's the 3rd best of the last 3 sweepers they have had. If an AV player gets it it could be DR like you said if they win state and he banks 25-30 goals.

    ReplyDelete
  30. great to see teams still play with a a sweeper.

    ReplyDelete
  31. Most teams around here aren't good enough to play without a sweeper.

I've even seen a lot of the underdog teams in World Cup qualifying playing with a sweeper.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Sweeper won't be mr soccer. Not enough stats to show HS coaches they are good players. Remember it needs to be dumb down to them.

Also, Montie had his own media machine going just like PY. They both have earned it over the years with their play in both club and HS. Both will and have gone on to play D1. Can't say that about either Mr Soccer last year. WB has never performed in club, he has speed that looks good on long narrow fields. He was fortunate that he had teamates who knew how to deliver a ball. When he stepped off the field at the State Tournament Osseo had no problems and continued to dominate and score with speed. The fact that he not playing D1 Soccer and doing track speaks exactly to what kind of player he is. My opinion, Mr. Soccer should have been....SD & RM. At least they are playing college soccer.

Tearing players down....This isn't so much tearing players down as pointing out the stupidity of the coaches and media who don't take the time to understand the game. IMS usually has some insight on the Thunder but when it comes to High School and Club he should stay out of it. Last years media and hype seem to be the worst in memory. Trib opening article talked about a kid who had already graduated last year.

    ReplyDelete
  33. apple valley just plays with a sweeper and boots the ball up the field, they don't play good soccer

    ReplyDelete
  34. 12:13 its true

    ReplyDelete
  35. well they have the most state championships in state history and have the number one rank in the state right now. so youre stupid to say it isn't good soccer because winning games is good soccer. their coach gets the most out of their athletic players every year

    ReplyDelete
  36. Boot and scoot soccer is great soccer for soccer with long narrow football fields. Additionally, with more and more schools putting in artifical turf, boot and scoot with get more and more popular for high school teams. It also requires less ball skills overall on the field. It is good, soccer? If it wins games it hard to say it is not. Is it a different game than you see in club, absolutely.

Which one would I rather watch....Club. The athletes have to work harder at their crafts and as a fan I appreciate their work.

I would love to see high school invest not in artifical turf but into soccer fields/stadiums. I beleive that is what most WI high school have.

    ReplyDelete
  37. the funny thing about AV is that they do have a 120 X 80 soccer only stadium

    ReplyDelete
  38. 5:25...please quit saying "boot and scoot"

    ReplyDelete
  39. 525- AV does have the soccer only field like 544 pointed out.

Also, these kids win at the club level you prefer to watch as well must be hard for you. Playing the ball forward with a purpose and making runs off of that is a great game still. Tiny passes up field is nice but this is the new exciting way to play. Brazil did it at the Confederations Cup and won. The game is changing into fast passed counter attacks.

    ReplyDelete
  40. New? They've been playing direct in England and elsewhere forever.

Changing? Barcelona won everything last season by possessing the ball with short passes. They were one of the best teams of all time.

WB was his team's best player at the 2009 State Cup and a top 11 U17 club player overall.

    ReplyDelete
  41. Completely disagree on the WB best player during state cup comment. Kessler, Baker, and Yonga all more important to that team. He should have been the best. Like he should be playing Div. I soccer. Sadly neither are true

    ReplyDelete
  42. Too bad that team of "studs" couldn't even get out of group play

    ReplyDelete
  43. Those were the only four 'studs' on the team - don't spark the same old argument about all the talent being spread out. Watch for Blackhawks next year at this age - they should have all the best together now.

    ReplyDelete
  44. considering SCV and VLY, the last two state cup winners didnt lose anyone, i dont think that they have ALL the best together now, and SSM is gonna be at full strength with a full U18 squad next season, this age group is still a crap shoot with any of about 6 teams in the running to be the best

    ReplyDelete
  45. none of this is about D1 players or D1 soccer...

    ReplyDelete
  46. It is obvious by the lastest posts why some players can not get through the NCAA Clearinghouse and qualify to play NCAA Div I. Reading comprehension is one of the requirements via the ACT or SAT. Most Division I teams start play on the men's side starting today. One team to watch with the most talent is UW Milwaukee, other teams with more than one MN tie are Columbia, Wisconsin, Creighton, and Marquette.

    ReplyDelete
  47. UW Milwaukee will not be good.

Wisconsin will be much better now that they have a new head coach in Todd Yeagley but will obviously experience some growing pains as they adjust. There are several top prospects from WI who have already committed to attend there next year.

Creighton is tough every year. This is not likely to change.

Marquette is solid but it is tough to make a living in the Big East. Big travel, big budgets, big soccer programs that make it difficult to dominate the way UW Milwaukee used to in the Horizon league when the Marquette coaches were running the show accross town. Since their departure from UW Milwaukee the quality of the team has gone down the drain. Watch for the head coaching job to be posted there in the next few years.

  48. kallman at creighton? laughable. kid is one of the most overrated players in the history of the state. he works hard with above average skill and his last name takes care of the rest. D1 was a stretch, much less creighton. way to push for that one, pops.

    ReplyDelete
  49. you do not know what you are talking about with Kallman. Sure he wont start right away but he definitely deserved to go D1. He has the size, skill, and work ethic to make it at a good program.

    ReplyDelete
  50. ill give you size (he grew a lot) and work ethic (definitely there) but not skill (like i said, above average). i guess i dont know what im talking about after playing with him for over 4 years? call me bitter if you want but there were other kids on the teams he played on that deserved recognition a lot more than he did. and whats with switching him to D after playing for/mid all his HS careers? if he does a good job, well done then. most of what im getting at is that if you attach someone else's last name him, he's not at creighton.

    ReplyDelete
  51. 12:43,
What's up with Tony Sanneh switching to D for USMNT after playing midfield all those years?
Give the Creighton coaches a little credit. They have one of the premier programs in the country and it's not by accident.

    ReplyDelete
  52. 12:43 sounds like you have a serious case of "shortman disease".

There does seem to be two excuses for players/parents and coaches as to why someone should not be considered good.

    Size & Speed.

Both are god given. Both need talent as well.

  54. Just googled Whitney Browne to see were he was playing and how he was doing. He's playing at a Jr College in Kansas????? What going on here?

    ReplyDelete
  55. Maybe he didn't get cleared by the NCAA academic eligibility center?

    ReplyDelete
  56. But I thought he was an amazing student who was graduating at 16? If he couldn't clear the NCAA academic eligibility center you would think he would stay in high school for another year?

    ReplyDelete
  57. My 2 cents on WI D1s with MN boys.

UW-Green Bay is the class soccer program in Wisconsin. Poitras does a great job finding players that other coaches overlook. He is also, by far, the best tactical coach of the Wisconsin group, and most respected by his players. There current form reflects a healthy program.

Marquette is a below average program, which makes the poor in the Big East. Mostly because of coaching. While this staff had success at UWM, they can't seem to get it together at Marquette. They consistently underachieve, regardless of their talent level. They seem to be a team of individuals. A current program member told me the players are loosing respect for the coaching staff. Look for a coaching change after this season.

UW-Milwaukee has been a disaster since the current coaching staff took over. They certainly seem to have talent, based on the players they have attracted, but can't seem to get it done on the field. I believe their winning % has dropped every year with the current regime. Look for a coaching change after this season, or if their new former-NFL AD has guts, he will put the trigger mid season.

UW-Madison probably has the most talent of the four. They have been very competitive over the years, but not always successful in the wins column. Only time will tell how successful the new coaching staff will be. A 1-2-1 start is not a great sign, especially giving up 6 goals in their last 2 games, with their coach making preseason statements about a defensive focus.

That's not the way it works.
Once you graduate, you can't "go back" and make stuff up.
If your final transcript doesn't meet all the APPROVED "core courses" and / or you don't have the minimum ACT / SAT for your GPA...
You are out of D1/D2 luck.
One half a credit "short" can do a kid in.
    Anon 10:25
Pretty spot on in your assesment.
Agree about TP @ UWGB finding players in unusual places.
And it's really a shame whats happened at UW-Mil.

    ReplyDelete
  59. Anon 10:29 isn't that something you figure out before you graduate? As I recall last year he touted as a excellent student. If you 1/2 credit short, you can take summer course.

    ReplyDelete
  60. For D1 the NCAA requires 16 "core courses".
Each high school has a list of courses that are approved to meet those requirements.
And yes, if an athlete is serious and even knows about the "clearinghouse" , he would get his ducks in a row early.
I don't know the details of the athlete in question.
Perhaps he was an excellent student at his high school.
Maybe he got good grades in classes that were not on the NCAA approved list.
If so, those courses don't count toward eligibility.
There is also the question of the sliding ACT / SAT / GPA scale.
That can get a kid in trouble as well.

    ReplyDelete
  61. 12:43
He is already working his way into the lineup and that is not because of his name!! Let's see what happens this weekend.

    ReplyDelete
  62. I played against him in mens league this summer. Very athletic, but an average mens league soccer player. I would be suprise to see him stand out in college, but you never know.

    ReplyDelete
  63. WB could not achieve the minimum required ACT score. It is not a "credits" or required course issue. So there, now leave the kid alone and wish him well with JC and hope he receives a quality education.

    ReplyDelete
  64. Anon 9:32, for the record, I don’t think anyone’s criticizing this kid.
But his situation does bring up an important topic for prospective student athletes.
The NCAA Clearinghouse uses a sliding scale to determine a minimum ACT.
Sum scores are used instead of a composite score.
Here are a few target numbers:
    3.5 GPA 39 ACT (Sum)
    3.0 GPA 52 ACT (Sum)
    2.5 GPA 68 ACT (Sum)
    2.0 GPA 86 ACT (Sum)
If a kid has a B (3.0) average, he needs to score a minimum of 13s on each of the Eng, Math, Read, Sci Tests.
If all coaches / parents / academic advisors understood the system, before it was too late, more kids would probably qualify.
You can start taking the ACT early and improve your chances.
The player in question surely isn't the first student to get derailed by standardized testing!

  67. 9/9/09 10:45 PM would you happen to be Quinn Bottom?

    ReplyDelete
  68. 18/9/09 2:05 PM - haha no but nice guess. im not sure quinn knows about this site.

if you think he should be playing at a top 5 program thats your opinion and you are entitled to it just like im entitled to mine. maybe he can get it done in the back because he has less of a role with the ball and doesnt need the footskills, creativity, etc playing at the position(s) he used to play for club and HS. like i said earlier, he has a great work ethic, size, and above average skill. that should suit well for a defender.

    ReplyDelete
  69. Anon 12:59 Your bias is showing. Believe it or not but defenders do have to have footskills and creativity. Soccer is a team sport. If you think playing defense for a D1 school is so easy, why have you not tried to do it?

    ReplyDelete
  70. i guess i should define exactly what im trying to say so you dont nitpick everything.

defenders OBVIOUSLY have talent and footskills (ie. john terry) but NOT ALL. some are better equipped with size and then have ok skill (ie. onyewu).

im highlighting the shift from previous days of F/MF to D. if he had the playmaking ability and skill of the other creighton F/MF, why isnt he up there? he chose to play D instead? less emphasis is placed on playmaking, creativity, and footskills when you are a defender. and you are going to disagree with that? Anon 8:10 your bias is showing.

Defenders roles arent dribbling, creating goals, etc. its about time you realize that.

Ha. Where did I say it was easy? Maybe you should actually read what i said before you jump to conclusions.

    ReplyDelete
  71. Anon 7:08 You implied it was easy to play Defense and still are. That he has chosen to play denfense at Creighton because it was easy.

"less emphasis is placed on playmaking, creativity, and footskills when you are a defender. and you are going to disagree with that?" Yes, I would. Have you ever heard it starts from the back? Freddie Hejduck seems like a perfect example to me.

I don't know if it is a MN thing, but we certainly seem to have a group that loves guys that dance around the ball and can't put it in the back of the net. The truth of the matter is that not one of them is playing D1. Kudos to the guy who is on the field at D1. Kudos to the guy who is on the field as as a freshman playing D1. To the rest it is just sour grapes.

    ReplyDelete
  72. thats like me saying that you are implying that defense takes more skill, creativity, footskills, etc. you are taking what im saying and flipping it around for defense. i NEVER said it was easy. i WAS implying its easIER.

you still didnt answer ANY of my questions about the switch and you didnt object to my terry/onyewu comparison. again, nitpicking while leaving what you know is true out of it.

creative and playmaking defenders are rare. john terry, beckenbauer. they dont come around that often. i have heard it starts from the back. i watch plenty of football on tv and even the professional defenders dont create the plays that often. they a) kick it out b) switch around the back maintaining possession (which is good i might add. had to say that before you jumped on that one) c) boot it up hoping a F gets to it. once in a while they will make a beautiful ball to create the scoring opportunity.

im telling you that i know defenders have skill but its LESS about having the footwork, creativity, playmaking than F/MF. get that through your head. just like F dont have emphasis on 1v1 defending and long balls out of the back.

believe me, i hate dancing with no results as much as the next person. ronaldo, messi, kaka: all players that put up results and people like to watch.

for anon hatin on bk at creighton...you should check out the box score from Saturday night...in a tight game he was one of two freshmen who saw significant minutes...I doubt Warming cares what his last name is if he's playing him in a must win game. Obviously he has proven to a well-respected coach that has put together great teams in recent years that he belongs.

I think your comment is laughable, obviously don't know a division 1 athlete when you see one.

  74. Roberto Carlos - end of story

    ReplyDelete
  75. It's Frankie Hejduck, isn't it?

A lot of the best defenders are not that creative, but they sure better be good at decision making and playing possesion ball. Professionally, they don't need that much size. Dani Alves is barely 5'7" and john Terry is 5'11". Arguably one of the best outside and center backs in the world In the US there seems to be an overemphasis on size and underemphasis on skill in defenders. College is a perfect example.

    ReplyDelete
  82. I had two points; WB was example of these points.
    1) An awful lot of miss information is posted on this blog and in the general media.
    2) I think the Mr. Soccer award and other awards like it should be tied to a student/players performance in the classroom as well as on the field. Most on this blog have lamented the lack of D1 men’s players coming from MN. Many here believe it is from a lack of development and talent. Most overlook that several Mr. Soccer’s have not gone on to play D1, not because of a lack of soccer talent, but from a lack of academics.

    ReplyDelete
  83. WB was last year. Let it go, Your son didn't get it. Move on.

    ReplyDelete
  84. Believe it or not, my son wasn't in the running. Academics would not have help him in running for Mr. Soccer. Nor would I want this to be just about WB. Feel free to check on Mr. Soccer for the past 3-4 years to see where they are playing? Then find out why they are not playing D1. Often it is not because of the desire to play at that level, but because of a lack of academic performance. Which I think is a real failure of the schools, parents, summer & H.S. Coaches.

But I am tired of listening to parents complain about the lack of D1 men's players coming out of MN, with no acknowledgememnt to probably the biggest contributing fact to that lack of failure. But, your right not my probably or concern, please feel free to continue with the same complaints.

08 - CM - U of W Madison, KP - Last I heard had tried out for several semi pro and pro teams did not make any. (No College could not meet NCAA requirements)
07 - PG Brown University, AG U of W Milwaukee
    06 - BM - U of W Madison, RV - U of W Wisconsin

Only 50 % of MN Mr. Soccer's are playing D1 College soccer. With the trend going the wrong direction. What the difference?

  90. Mister Soccer9/26/09, 12:21 AM

Props to Teal Bunbury of Shattuck and Prior Lake for leading Akron to the #1 collegiate ranking in the country. That's pretty cool.

Props to Whitney Browne of Osseo for playing Junior College soccer in Kansas. I imagine he'll move on to D1 if he gets the academics in order. Whitney is a good player and was more than deserving of the Mr. Soccer award. He's only 17. He could really become a player if he continues to develop.

Props to his brother, Martin Browne of Osseo, for leading Western Illinois in scoring. That's pretty cool too.

Props to Brent Kallman of Woodbury for getting some minutes for nationally ranked Creighton. That's pretty cool. Same goes for Trent Senske of Eden Prairie.

Props to Calum Mallace of St. Paul for leading Marquette in scoring. If I remember correctly, I predicted Calum would be a great collegiate player 2 years ago on this blog but was shot down by negative idiot bloggers.

  100. Congrats to Trent Brown, from Wisconsin who went to school at Shattuck St. Mary's for being able to 1)get into West Point 2)and start as a defender there. I'm sure everyone on the MN Futbol Blog is excited for him.

It is too bad that the young men from MN can't get that kind of education in high school. Just think how many opportunities this man is getting, that are lost to MN players due to the poor education they receive while being a student athlete.

    ReplyDelete
  101. everyone - please don't bite on 10:22.....just have a good chuckle

    ReplyDelete
  102. Or it could be a backhand compliment that SSM who advertises that it works with student athletes on a one on one basis to ensure their academic sucess as well as their athletic sucess. That their teachers work with students who miss school for athletics. Teachers and School administrators who have a vested interest in the athletes sucess, both acedemically and athletically.

It is mentioned on this thread that Class AA "MN Mr. Soccer" was not able to clear the NCAA Clearinghouse. I would suspect he did not receive anywhere near the kind of athletic support that any of the SSM students receive. MN has proved that on the field they can compete with SSM it is in the classroom were we have failed them. I wonder how many other sports have this same experience? Hockey? Basketball? sports that demand travel and exposure?

By the way kudos to SSM for getting it right!

    ReplyDelete
  103. I don't know this Trent Brown.
But, his bio states he played for Wings, under Manny Sanchez, and also participated in MN ODP.
My hats off to him for get accepted to any military academy.
It’s no small accomplishment to juggle athletics and academics at the collegiate level.
To do the above at West Point is pretty impressive.
    Best of luck to him!!!

  117. 6-17-6 - combined record of the 3 struggling WI D1 soccer programs (Marquette, UW-Madison and UW-Milwaukee). Each have 2 wins. Only UW Green Bay, at 8-1-2 are having a good season.

19-34-7 - combined record of the teams accounting for the 6 wins between the 3 struggling WI schools.

Ouch! Looks like Marquette and UW-Milwaukee are headed for new coaching staffs next year. UW-Milwaukee is probably having the worst year as they play in a mid-tier conference. UW-Madison has a new coach this year and will loose a considerable amount of his talent after this year.

Maybe these schools should move to the MIAC!

    ReplyDelete
  118. I find it humours that someone slams BK for playing CB at Creighton. But nothing is said about TB, playing CB for West Point who has only scored 4 goals, but has let in 20 goals in 10 games. Sorry SMM I don't know if I would brag too much. Perhaps West Point should join the MIAC. I think this illustrates that D1 is no indication of skill level.

    ReplyDelete
  119. D1 is certainly an indication of a players skill and ability. Don't kid yourself, even as poor as UW-Milwaukee's and Marquette's soccer program have performed with their current coaches, in a 10 game MIAC season these teams would be probably be 10-0 with only 1 or 2 games modestly contested.

    ReplyDelete
  120. Which makes my point, as West Point is 0-10 with 1 goal scored for every 5 goals their opponents score. From your comments sounds to me as they would have good match ups in the MIAC, and then certainly is a indication of the quaility of players in that D1 program.

    ReplyDelete
  121. West Point is 1-9, and if you knew what you were talking about, you'd see that they have lost seven 1 goal games where they out-shot the opponent in each game...Seems to me it's not a matter of bad defense, but rather an extremely poor offense and an even worse coach...

Yes I am an SSM affiliate... So I have a bias, but I applaud Brett for starting at Creighton, that's great!

I would also note Brown had D1 offers from some prime time programs, including Harvard who is top ten right now.

West Point has 126 shots, and have scored and average of .4 goals per game. But has a .357 SOG percentage.

They have lost 6 games by one goal and won 1 game by one goal. They have lost 3 games by more than 3 goals. Sorry, I know if I knew what I was taling about I wouldn't think the problem is that the defense can't clear the ball.

Good job to TB for getting admitted to WP! Academically no mean feat!

    ReplyDelete
  124. 2008 RPI West Point was 197 out of 203 D1 programs. Puts them in the bottom 5%. Also, dont confuse Navy and Army academic entrance requirements to be equal to other Patriot League schools. I don't know if entrance to West Point should be congratulated more than other universities and colleges. Remember everyone is there on a free ride.

  135. My point is that with all of the highly licensed coaches in MN, few if any have really developed any of the top talent. Most were developed by their fathers in the back yard. ODP did nothing, Wings did nothing, Bangu did nothing, EP did nothing, etc.

6:46, Marquette is 7th in the Big East. YOu have to combine the two sides, they are 7th and will finish 9th.

    ReplyDelete
  136. Mister Soccer: i agree with your posts about Calum. people thought it was laughable that he was thrown into the Mr Soccer mix two years ago. he was as fundamentally sound as CM but also provided an attacking threat. hopefully he can surpass his brother and have more pro success.

    ReplyDelete
  137. AG, another player developed by his father. Calum M another player developed by his father/brother.

AG is a fine player. But he has struggled to be a consistent player. Jumped around a bit, but an outstanding player. He must have had a strong relationship with Warming, as he played some of his best soccer at CU. TB has been a dominate force on every team, every season, every game he has played. He is also a very strong defender and pressures all over the field when it is on. Work rate, pace, technical skills, defensive posture, game intelligence, goal scoring, TB does it all. I doubt he will stay around and finish college. I think he will be overseas next fall.

Don't get me wrong, if I was a coach I would love to have every player mentioned on this post on my roster.

    ReplyDelete
  138. Actually, Marquette are 10th in the Big East.

    ReplyDelete
  139. Madison Men has a chance of winning Big Ten. Brandon Miller and Colin Monasterio, Ryan Vint, contributing to this success. Kudos to them and the new coach.

    ReplyDelete
  140. Monasterio has only played in 3 of the Wisconsin Badger's games this year for a total of 18 minutes.
    Has he been injured?

    ReplyDelete
  141. CM is a good player and should be on the field. Could be due to injuries, new coach, new philosophy, style of play, all of the above. He is still young and has lots of playing years ahead of him. One can always guess with new coach, expectations are higher and players need to adjust.

    ReplyDelete
  142. Madison should be a better team. They are loaded with outstanding players, including 3 of MN best recent youth players. The previous coaching staff could never quite pull things together. The new staff should be able to move things forward with the same group of players. They should finish the regular season with a similar record as 2 of the last 3 years. Not sure if that means the new staff is any better or worse.

    ReplyDelete
  143. If milwaukee, madison, or marquette was in the MIAC they would struggle. You think that a school like Madison could get some good talent just by having such a nice campus. It's said they scrimmage good WIAC teams and they are barely or not coming out with a result.
Why not look at teams like the MTA team that was U-18 last year? They have never lost to SSM but just cause the kids are playing to get better the scouts look at them... Just play stupid. I would love to recruit for a school like Madison!!

  145. 8:20 your post is random and stupid. For the most part, every player on a D1 team is as good as the top 1, 2 or possibly 3, at every MIAC school.

So 11 strong players on the field against 1 or 2 strong players would be a blowout 9 out of 10 times. D1 teams have nothing to gain by playing D3 teams and usually play 25 players. D3 teams use these games as their super bowl.

    ReplyDelete
  146. They scrimmage all the time. The results are not one sided. I agree with you though. All I am just saying is their is some very good talent that these big schools miss, and they struggle because of it.

    ReplyDelete
  147. The idea that the best 3 players on a great D3 program would be the the last 3 on the roster of most D1 school is simply ignorant.

  159. Coach Poitras will not leave UW Green Bay for another state school. He's an East Coast guy who left a D II to build a D I team in the Midwest. He has some talent returning in JC Banks and still has ties to Canadian and European talent to fill key slots. I only see him going back East where his mentor, Ray Reid, the UConn coach will provide guidance.

    ReplyDelete
  179. You are bemused; I heard the same about Swanbeck when they forced Chiavaro into retirement. The Patriot Conference is getting better every year and getting the same "true student-athletes" that Army is trying to recruit. You don't go to West Point to play soccer; you go to become an Army officer if you have success in any athletic sports then that's an added bonus because you have a 95% chance of being in Iraq or Afghanistan within 6 months of graduation. Try recruiting with that scenario, you’ll get dedicated players who will give their all but the end game is totally different than any other university including Navy and Air Force. If you define solid as beating Navy and Air Force I agree, anything else would be great considering the task. He definitely is not going to be pulling Maryland or ACC quality players into the program but he may be able organize his talent for better success compared to the last four years.

  180. Big Ten: coaching moves is interesting: Indiana coach is out and Yeagley from WI to Indiana. WI looking for new coach. Just curious if WI will look at any MN D3 coaches ready to step up to D1 level?

    ReplyDelete
  181. Wisconsin will go after a proven recruiter and assistant or head coach with Div I experience to fill the position. Jon Lowery and Ian Barker both have the background, other MIAC coaches are definitely qualified but the life in a Big Ten program is tough just look at the comments on the Gophers women coach on this blog. Why leave a quality MIAC program for purgatory or worse.

    ReplyDelete
  182. No chance anyone from Minnesota involved in any of the openings at the Division I level (Wisconsin, UW-Milwaukee, etc.). Lowery left Wake Forest to slow down and start a family - and is compensated very well. Ian makes more money at Macalester than he would at Madison (he was an asst. coach there in 1995) and has job security. None of the other MIAC coaches have any Div. I experience so to say they are 'definitely qualified' is a massive stretch. Above that, I would guess none of them would trade in their lifestyles for that of a Division I coach - especially if they have a family. It's not as glorious as it might appear on the outside.

    ReplyDelete

    12 - 5 -2 Missouri State
    15 - 7 -0 St. Louis

  196. It is very rare for a freshman, not to mention a senior to get a full scholarship. The 9 "full' scholarships available are split up to give many players a certain percentage of scholarship. This way coaches can retain their top players while being able to offer recruits an attractive offer. Being a current D1 player I and many others on my team received at most 10% scholarship our first year but it is a one year commitment and depending on how you do after that year it can increase to say 50-75% or the opposite and be cut (both have happened in my career) I hope this helps clear up the often confusing scholarship topic .

  197. hey people, for JY money is not a problem. older son went to Ivy where there are no scholarsahips, now younger son going to Madison with reciprocity, I am sure Madison expenses are less then
some priovate schools in MN. I know JY and he has educational on his mind beyond soccer for his kids. JY chime in, we need to hear where you stand on this.
