'09 Girls HS Season

With coaches practice started at most high schools, the excitement for the 2009 MN high school season is upon us. Should be a great year for HS soccer with many very strong U16, U17 and U18 girls club teams.

  1. insert school name is by far the best team out there. Insert school name will dominate any and all. Insert school name will easily win the insert conference name.

    all other teams are garbage.

    ReplyDelete
  2. 11:05 you forgot "insert" kid name....

    ReplyDelete
  3. Woodbury is always blessed with having almost the whole Premier program for their Varsity Team.

Any thoughts on how the new Eastridge will be?

Hill-Murray has alot of talent but they dont play together as a team...and the coach IMO is more of a friend to the girls than a "Coach". Let's play World Cup for every practice....that is a great practice.

    ReplyDelete
  4. This will be Woodbury's last hurrah!! After this year they will be middle of the pack. East Ridge will be weak to start with then average when all is said and done.

    ReplyDelete
  5. going out on a limb here.......AA finals will be Woodbury vs. either EP or Wayzata.

    ReplyDelete
  6. Not sure about woodbury, according to MYSA standings they only came in third in their league and I heard about half of those kids don't go to Woodbury HS. So That could be a toss up. Wayzata is a good possibility and EP might be interesting with their new HS coach.

    ReplyDelete
  7. 1:36 - WDB is the defending state champ with virtually their entire team back.

    ReplyDelete
  8. 251, you are correct, unfortunately for them they don't have a lot after that.

    ReplyDelete
  9. AHA might also be interesting, they did lose some good players but seem to have replacements ready.

    ReplyDelete
  10. Woodbury ...really according to their Varsity roster from last year they graduated 9 players.....

    ReplyDelete
  11. 5:33 - true, but their best players were juniors last year and are the core players on the U18 Inferno team. They also have some top MTA U17 blue defenders. All four of their all state tournament players from last fall were juniors.

    ReplyDelete
  12. The two most dominant teams at state tourney time in the last decade have been WDB 2003 and LS 2007. WDB 2009 has a chance to be just as good.

    ReplyDelete
  13. Expect EP, WDB and EVHS to reload. Think LS will not be as strong as last year. Looking forward to a fun season. Had knee replacement this off season so hope to get out and about more this year and see more than the games across the street.

Still following those who traveled to college. What a year! Lots of good players to follow!Good luck ladies!

  14. Forgot to ask. Anyone know 2010 verbals?

    ReplyDelete
  15. see attached.

    http://spreadsheets.google.com/pub?key=poknaL_RaORDOMcyz_riBDA&output=html

    ReplyDelete
  16. I think Eagan girls have a chance to have a very strong season this year as well

    ReplyDelete
  17. That is an impressive list of 2010 verbals. Does any H.S. other than WDB have more than one D1 player this fall?

    ReplyDelete
  18. RE: //spreadsheets.google.com/pub?key=poknaL_RaORDOMcyz_riBDA&output=html
If only looking for MN players, I find it easier to check by using the club tab on the spreadsheet.
So far, these are the MN clubs listed:
    MINNESOTA THUNDER
    PLYMOUTH
    ST. CROIX
    WOODBURY

    ReplyDelete
  19. Just found out, Woodbury has 10 plus seniors on the Varsity team plus 7 Juniors and a couple MTA Soph. Not to sure about the JV team.

    ReplyDelete
  20. i see the eagen goalie is on the 2012 national recruiting lists.

    ReplyDelete
  21. Anyone can be placed on those lists. You just need to send an email to them and they place you on the appropriate year of graduation list.

    ReplyDelete
  22. 11:27, interesting you have the WDB numbers. They don't pick their team until next week.

    ReplyDelete
  23. Funny how that WDB Varsity squad is out their huh....

    ReplyDelete
  24. Why is it "funny"? Can't one make an educated guess about the makeup of a team who is returning All-State and Regional/National Pool level players?

Sure, maybe your little Susie has improved.....but that would be the exception rather than the rule.

Take a deep breath and relax. I hardly think there is any conspiracy here.......(for once)

    ReplyDelete
  25. Teams already picked. I know my daughter didnt get moved up. So the above reference is true. It happened after practice yesturday Morning. Consists of the Seniors, Junior, MTA plus one WAA player.

    ReplyDelete
  26. WDB team has not been picked. Scimmages Saturday and Monday determine final roster. Let your DD believe the team is picked and she will determine her own fate.

    ReplyDelete
  27. lol....WDB parents must not have any place else to vent.

    ReplyDelete
  28. lol...........You call that venting?

    ReplyDelete
  29. Top teams
EP, WDBRY, EDINA, ESTVW.(BP at ESTVW most dynamic/electric HS player in the state)

    Eagan may surprise some people.

What will JD be able to do at BVLLE, they have had talent for years but no coach

With WH gone can SW get the Hornets back to state?

LS will be down but still make section final- may be Roch Cent finally breaks through

Not so sure about Wayzata as a final four team, Although TP usually finds a way (except in the case of Armstrong)

Interesting how EP will shake out. No matter what you think of WH and his histrionics he did get them their state title and a few good finals in his short tenure. No one else could manage that despite the players and numbers at the UNIV OF EP. New coach seems reputable, but who knows how he will deal with HS girls.

In the end it is one more year for WDBRY and everyone else, then it will be EP forever as they will never build a 2nd school and will eventually be forced into the MIAC.

    Let the craziness begin

    ReplyDelete
  30. waiting for it....

    ReplyDelete
  31. Again...can we have a college thread???? Please!!!!
Several local college freshman get starting nod in preseason DI exhibition games.
Congrats Ladies! Keep up the good work and stay healthy!

    ReplyDelete
  32. Are there any interesting scrimmages on Saturday?

    ReplyDelete
  33. Some schools have already posted their roster to the MN HS site. Is there a deadline to post rosters?

    ReplyDelete
  34. 2:08 I am not aware of a deadline, as last year some schools never filled them in. Maybe playoff time, or State Tournament...

    ReplyDelete
  35. Not sure what or how good JD at bville will be. He had most of those girls as a 17 premier team this summer and by one game only they held their status. So I wouldn't expect much . . . they have a few good players that don't play local so who knows.

    ReplyDelete
  36. Wait a minute, I thought you could not coach your players in the summer?

Have I been sucker to a myth? Anyone, anyone, Buehler..

    ReplyDelete
  37. I would like to know that to. I thought you cant coach high school athletes over the winter/spring but after a certain date...June 1? You can coach them again. I dont know....anyone?

    ReplyDelete
  38. I think since JD was not the coach in previous year he is exempt this year as he is not yet technically the coach. Now that he is HS varsity coach, he could not next year. the rule states that you cannot coach "your players" maybe since they were not his players yet he gets by? Who knows, just a guess.

    ReplyDelete
  39. I actually would watch burnsville in the south as LD joins them in high school. No, they won't beat Woodbury or Eden prairie, but they should beat the rest of the Lake.

    ReplyDelete
  40. JD did an amazing job with the U17 girls down there last summer. Burnsville may not be the bomb this year, they will be very competitive. The future looks really good- lots of young players.

    ReplyDelete
  41. i apologize for my ignorance, but who's jd?

    ReplyDelete
  42. Jeff Dennehy, he was the coach at Totino Grace for years and is now at BVHS

    ReplyDelete
  43. so is he mainly a high school coach? sorry, never heard of him in the club ranks.

    ReplyDelete
  44. LD has been with BV for three years. She is a senior.

    ReplyDelete
  45. Oh my god! if someone does not coach club ball he must suck JD coached club ball for years, this year with the BVllE soccer club.

    ReplyDelete
  46. why all the bvle love out there? folks feeling lonely south of the river? let's be honest.......when was the last time bvle was even a factor in AA?
between this and the other thread, for a club (and HS) that has done so little, there is an awful lot of bvle bluster.

  47. Pre-season action at East Ridge yesterday with EP, Woodbury, White Bear, and the host school. All teams used extended varsity rosters to give bubble players some good time on the field, but here's what I got as I walked around.

Woodbury - extremely tough. Fast and athletic, very technical, and dominant air game. Not much new here that people in the know don't already know. Multiple contenders for Ms Soccer in this squad.

White Bear - a team to watch this year. They will score a lot of goals with a terrific tall red-head up top and with their other talented attacking players, but GK and defensive weakness will see some 4-3 games.

East Ridge - outclassed in the event with no seniors and some injuries. Might go .500 in the Suburban East but should be a Class A contender come Sections with a good core group and excellent coach.

EPU - Looks like they're not missing a beat with the new coach. Some brutes on the field with some quickness and technical ability mixed in. Some injuries looked to keep a few of their big guns sidelined.

  50. another good scrimmage tuesday at AVHS. valley, eagan, ls, maple grove, edina, champlin park

    ReplyDelete
  51. Class A preview?

    ReplyDelete
  52. If a MN high school AD is smart he interviews prospects, offers the position, coach agrees to accept and signs coach to contract on 1 August. Thus coach can do whatever because he is legally not under contract. Not the first or last time this will happen and totally within MSHL rules.

    ReplyDelete
  53. 12:42, It appears most HS ADs aren't that smart. Wish they were. It would make HS more interesting to watch with a group of coaches who actually understand the gane today instead of how girls played 15 years ago. Maybe with MA coming into the HS world, along with coaches who actually COACH, like JD and DM, the attitude will change in the next few years. Quality players deserve better than what they are getting now.

    ReplyDelete
  54. Class A response:

I believe perennial powers such as Holy Angels, Orono, and Blake lost some considerable talent. However, I would still expect them to be competitive. What kind of returners do Benilde and Mahtomedi have? Those 5 teams typically are the cream of the crop. Any other class A teams that you think will be strong? The Tri-Metro seems to usually have 3-4 solid teams.

    ReplyDelete
  55. Any thoughts on the Classic Suburban Conference???????

    ReplyDelete
  56. Watched the Stillwater Girls Varsity team scrimmages this past Saturday and they by far were the best team out at Lucy Bell. Central Varsity Girls.....terrible!
Cretin-Derham Varsity Girls.....meh with some good players
North Saint Paul Varsity Girls.....going to be a long season especially playing against Hill-Murray, Mahtomedi, etc, etc.

    Comments?

    ReplyDelete
  57. 1259, Let's look at the big picture! Eventhough Stillwater was the better team than the 3 mentioned above they still are not a good team.

    ReplyDelete
  58. Is Coon Rapids any good this year?

    ReplyDelete
  59. there are plenty of good coaches who do not coach club ball and plenty of coaches who coach club ball that are not all that great. is is ridiculous to assume a coach is bad for the simple reason they do not coach club ball. it is a great thing that MA is in HS soccer but don't build him an altar just yet

    ReplyDelete
  60. MA is only in high school so he has access to East Ridge fields. Think about it.

    ReplyDelete
  61. Pre-Season Poll: August 23, 2009
    1. Woodbury
    2. Edina
    3. Wayzata
    4. Eden Prairie
    5. Coon Rapids
    6. Eastview
    7. Mounds View
    8. Rochester Century
    9. Eagan
    10. Duluth East

    ReplyDelete
  62. 438, You hit that nail on the head!!

    ReplyDelete
  63. Remove CR and MV. Past performance doesn't apply this year.

    ReplyDelete
  64. Expect SPA to be class of Tri-Metro, Breck could be good. Vis and Blake lost several good seniors each.

    ReplyDelete
  65. I think that AV has a good shot at a couple of the teams on your top ten list.

    ReplyDelete
  66. 1. Mahtomedi
    2. Holy Angels
    3. Benilde-St. Margaret's
    4. Totino-Grace
    5. Breck
    6. St. Louis Park
    7. La Crescent
    8. Rochester Lourdes
    9. Orono
    10. Monticello

    ReplyDelete
  67. a lot of thought went into that poll.....

    ReplyDelete
  68. Who's going to get knocked out of the top ten first?

    ReplyDelete
  69. MA will have access to Eastridge fields and also fields in Cottage Grove due to kids from Cottage Grove going to Eastridge HS.

    ReplyDelete
  70. class a
spa, blake, vis, mha, aha and washburn all in same section. At least 2 more from this section will climb into top 10 or be mentioned.

    ReplyDelete
  71. Yeah, what is up with Blake not even being mentioned in the rankings? Are they rebuilding that much?

    ReplyDelete
  72. Saw them play on Saturday. They aren't the powerhouse team of years past. Time will tell if they can rebuild quickly or not.

    ReplyDelete
  73. 10:53 am, who cares?

    ReplyDelete
  74. 8/18 8:48 pm

Iv'e seen them all play and they are good but I give the edge to the LS 2007 for sheer talent. This team was never really pushed to achieve their max potential and that was too bad.

It will be a long time before you see another HS team with that much talent.

    ReplyDelete
  75. High school coaches don't necessarily have access to fields for club soccer.

    ReplyDelete
  76. 1:04 Are the 2007 LS players doing well in college?

    ReplyDelete
  77. 3:20 - East Ridge is also a new Club under MYSA.

    ReplyDelete
  78. Why is it that HS coaches don't utilize the talent they get from the top summer teams? fairness? their egos? Suck up parents?

    ReplyDelete
  79. 4:07 the majority of the HS teams do.....however there are always going to be those who are too involved with what their community club has going on.

    ReplyDelete
  80. Woodbury will continue the dynasty with another state championship, but it could very well be the last for a while with the talent leaving and splitting with the new school Eastridge. WDB will be extremely tough, they arguably have the best Defender, Center Mid, and Forward/attacker in the state... Stacked

    ReplyDelete
  81. 12:23. Time will tell...won't it?

    ReplyDelete
  82. White Bear - a team to watch this year. They will score a lot of goals with a terrific tall red-head up top and with their other talented attacking players, but GK and defensive weakness will see some 4-3 games.

I have seen this tall red-headed girl play to. My opinion she is better than Catie Sessions from Woodbury. I think she has a shot at Ms Soccer this year. White Bear does not get the press like Woodbury does.
I would assume the tall red head plays club ball....White Bear??, would be my first guess.

    ReplyDelete
  83. high school stud does not always equal club stud

    ReplyDelete
  84. have changes for next years sections/conferences been announced yet?

    ReplyDelete
  85. Don't think they have yet.....what about MYSA meeting minutes, I thought they were suposed to start publishing those more often.

    ReplyDelete
  86. CS has name recognition and has played pretty darn well for the last few years to get the nomination for Ms. Soccer. Looking at WBL’s roster, I have no idea who you are writing about. JS from Edina, LB and CV from Eagan and CG and CS from Woodbury are my top picks for AA Ms. Soccer.

    ReplyDelete
  87. and KK also from Woodbury.

    ReplyDelete
  88. Eastview may not be the power some think they will be after some of the controversy brewing down there surfaces. Allegedly, members of the varsity team took part in the vandalizing of several homes, one of which may pursue criminal charges.

    ReplyDelete
  89. 10:00. The girl you're talking about is only a sophmore. She will get zero consideration for Ms. Soccer. She is not even the best forward on the team. 11:11 and 11:15 have the correct list of candidates.

    ReplyDelete
  90. 2007 LS girls have had a run of bad luck in NCAA's. KL- Ms. Soccer- broke her foot summer prior toi freshmen season has not yet healed requires surgery or may have to hang it up at Madison. KB- blew her knee out in first game last year, trying a comeback with Northwestern. SP- started all year as a freshmen for NCAA SDSU. OB- started and played full 90 for Gophers last week as a freshmen. SS- played a half for NDU this weekend as a freshmen. MR- did not see the field for Iowa state last weekend. MS- one more knee surgery last year and she is done in competitive athletics A few of the others are playing locally DII.

Couple of the kids will be cleared to return to practice this week.

    ReplyDelete
  92. KB will, but KL is mulling surgery or re-tirement

Is it bad luck, or too much year-round soccer that results in retirement at age 19 or 20? Seems like a high percentage of players.
I'm not trying to throw stones, just curious.

    ReplyDelete
  94. AF, the sophomore from WBL, is a two sport athlete at WBL. She was a starter on the varsity as a freshman in BB. Last I heard, she played club soccer with WBL Shock (U18).

    ReplyDelete
  95. Did Olivia from Holy Angels move to Arizona?

    ReplyDelete
  96. 725

Could not agree more about year round soccer- professionals have more time off! what these girls go through in a year is ridiculous. If your HS team makes the dome you get a week (maybe) off and then one more week off before HS tryouts.

The year round menatlity is hurting a lot of players

    LS fan

    ReplyDelete
  97. Word on the street is that Olivia from AHA did not end up moving, but unfortunately tore her ACL this summer.

    ReplyDelete
  98. I can understand it after playing year round for four/five years you can plain flat out get burnt out. There's a lot more in life than soccer once you get to college. To make matters worse there is no future for womens pro soccer except for a few U.S. players. I'd guess half the kids that start playing in college hang it up before the end of their sr year.Wonder what the real percentage is?

    ReplyDelete
  99. Could not agree more with 11:32pm. Even at the youth level these girls practice almost all year at the age of 9/10/11. And what is really scary is that some clubs label 9/10/11 year olds as ELITE....there is no such thing as a 9/10/11 year old ELITE player...does not exist. They have not gone through puberty yet. IMO save the ELITE Status for U16 and higher. All the ELITE is for is to stroke parents egos to shell out more money and more money and more money, and to brag that their next Abbey Wambach is on a ELITE team, or being led to believe they are ELITE.

No wonder the U12 age group one of the highest drop out rates for girls soccer. It's being crammed down their throats.

Give them a qualified coach not interested in getting paid but who is interested in development of the players.

    ReplyDelete
  100. Only about 5 hours to go. You can feel the tension can't you.

Good luck to all - looks like the perfect night.

    ReplyDelete
  102. Heck, I'm 43 and still trying to make premier.

    C1 dad

    ReplyDelete
  103. 1:28 pm, you seem to be a defensive dolt. The comments above had nothing to do with HS soccer.

KB has had a string of serious injuries, KL may retire due to injury, MS done after multiple knee surgery, OS out with ACL, LM infured and out of ODP this summer. Many of the best players from MN out with serious or competitive play-ending injuries.

The question is whether the injuries are a result of too much year round play.

    ReplyDelete
  104. I believe the injuries are mostly from overuse. You gotta give the kids some time away.

    ReplyDelete
  105. Skip high school play club ball in fall take November December off use january and February for strengh and conditioning start ball training in March. Would not only prepare kids properly but save the teams a lot of $$ as well

    ReplyDelete
  106. 11:38 - You are obviously far removed from the inherent value of kids playing for their schools and what they get out of it. Boy, times have changed. Remember, these are just kids, let them live a soccer life during high school worth remembering. I'm not arguing the fact that many players experience overuse and burnout, but rather that putting the axe in their high school soccer endeavors is taking away a valuable experience as a kid.

    ReplyDelete
  107. Overuse, overtrainig . . . it all goes back to a lack of understanding periodization in formulating practic plans. That and a failure to understand basic anatomy of a woman and how the hip angle changes affect athletic stresses on the knee. Goto www.aclprevent.com and copy your daughters coach and start this with your prepubescent daughter. Good stuff with long-term data to back it up.

    ReplyDelete
  108. There are many programs out there with exercises designed to strengthen the muscles around the knee, trunk, and core. This instruction also emphasizes the proper way to land and turn. IMO every practice should dedicate some time this type of program to prevent knee injuries in our young ladies.

The team also needs to remember to include, embrace, and encourage those players as they recover from their injuries. Players need to remember that being a quality teammate extends beyond the field of play.

    ReplyDelete
  109. Injury risk aside let's not diminish what a year round commitment results in. As a percentage high level (ie year round) female athletes are less likely to smoke, they get better grades, don't get arrested, don't get pregnant, etc. As the technology and experience of women athletes grows (this one of the first generations of females in sport) the injury awareness and prevention will grow. In the meantime, I would bet there are way more girls benefiting from a full year program than being hurt

    ReplyDelete
  110. haven't confirmed this, but i would bet if you look at the statistics, as a percentage, roughly the same number of kids are getting hurt now as in the past. there is just a much greater number of girls playing now and as chance has it a few more visible players.
part of it imo is how fine-tuned athletics has gotten. even look at the professional level. pitchers used to throw more innings without getting hurt, can't recall any of the old vikings with muscles pulls, etc....

I do agree with 9:32 comments.

    ReplyDelete
  111. Checking the stats I see North Saint Paul girls won against Forest Lake.
Anybody watch that game? Any chance North will do better than last year?, or the year before?, or the year before?, etc, etc.

    ReplyDelete
  112. North will win at least two conference games this year. I saw Tartan get dominated by Roseville last night. My daughter plays for Roseville and .500 would be a great year for her team.

    ReplyDelete
  113. 9:52, it's not my research, but I'd disagree on your assessment, based on information presented at the NSCAA Convention a few years ago. Season-/career-ending injuries among youth are way up compared to the past even when it's adjusted for increased participation time. When the data analysis was presented, if you controlled for all other factors, the two that really stuck out were playing the same sport year round, and playing the same position in a sport. The one caveat I'd add is that soccer was not one of the sports in the study, but they found it in every sport they had analyzed (6, if I recall correctly).

    ReplyDelete
  114. 1137 here again: Just looked at my notes from the talk, and it was 5 sports: softball/baseball, basketball, hockey, gymnastics, and volleyball. Looked at both genders. Final, comment was that the single best thing an athlete could do to get on the injury-free side of the equation was participate in multiple sports as long as possible. Not a popular answer to a bunch of soccer coaches, but the data is what it is.

    ReplyDelete
  115. I saw St. Croix Lutheran beat up on Watertown-Mayer yesterday 14-0.

    Are they in the Tri-Metro?

    ReplyDelete
  116. 11:42 & 11:37 - i agree with the numbers, but would argue that the bulk of the increase is due to the increased participation time. kids nowadays train so much more than the previous generation. increased training opportunities=increased injury opportunities.

  118. Not to throw a wrench in your works, it is probably just coincidence, but I know of a girl's soccer team where eight of eighteen players have had ACL's. Of the eight multisport athletes, seven have had ACL's. Of the other ten soccer only players, only one has had an ACL. Most of these injuries didn't occur on the pitch either.

    ReplyDelete
  119. 11:51

I'm not sure what conference SCL is in. I Saw that game too, I'm not sure if they were that strong or if Watertown-Mayer was that weak. The will play Roseville on Saturday and Tartan will play Watertown-Mayer. We might be able to tell more after those games.

    ReplyDelete
  120. Sorry, but Central will never "gel", as the coach demands ugly boot ball from boys trained to play possession...always ends in heartbreak.

    ReplyDelete
  121. They might not "gel," but they will develop the ability to play multi-dimensional soccer. BTW, the correct terminology is "direct."

    ReplyDelete
  122. I have a question, some of you alluded to the playing of HS players earlier in this thread that don't play for the local club. I did not think this happened much but,(I am not saying my kid is the next Mia Hamm) how do you deal with a kids' frustration at being a starter all last year and doing fairly well, to all the sudden with a new coach, sitting out alot and not starting. We are are small school and most of the kids play with the local group ours does not. Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

    ReplyDelete
  123. You cannot be serious about Eagan being that good. MO plays no competition......every team would look great if they played Watertown-Mayor all season. Ep takes the crown in the Lake and state title is EP vs. Woodbury, then EP for the next decade.

    ReplyDelete
  124. 8:15 Eastview will certainly be a contender (not this year but over the next 4)_ and Don't rule out either Lakeville teams over the next four years.

    ReplyDelete
  125. 6:19 High School soccer is either really fun for a certain group or heart breaking for the other part of the group. have your daughter speak with the coach to find out if there is something different she should be doing, for your self do not approach the coach it will make it worse. There may be a miscommunication between the player and the coach or maybe the coach caught an eye roll, or maybe things are just unfair. Either way the season is short. the best you can do for your daughter is allow her to vent at home so when she is at practice and games she can have a good attitude. Good Luck.

    ReplyDelete

  128. 6:19 Think of this as a great opportunity for your daughter to learn some really great skills that will serve her well as an adult. As an adult we all know to be successful we have times at work where our boss does not see things the way we see it.

Adise your daughter to work as hard at practice as she possibly can, hustle to every ball, listen intently to the coach and execute exactly what they are asking.

On the bench, at the games, cheer her team on, listen to what the coach praises, and demonstrate those things with her playing time. Keep a positive attitude. When the time is right, after she has done these things, she should approach the coach, thank them for the feedback and let them know she wants to get better and help her team win so she appreciate its.

Coaches are human, they can't see everything, over time she will demonstrate her skill. If she does not let an attitude get in her way I predict she will be very happy by the end of the season.

  129. Very well said 8:32!!!

    ReplyDelete
  130. Thanks to both of you who responded, we are trying to do much of that and will continue to. It is just hard sometimes to be positive. Also, does anyone know what the rules are for getting additional training during the HS season?

    ReplyDelete
  131. It is forbidden. Players are not allowed to receive extra coaching.

I would not panic about your child, coaches adjust and change strategies throughout a season so sit tight.

    ReplyDelete
  132. As long as the trainer is not affiliated with your daughter's club your daughter can get extra training.

It's a great idea. Individual training is very effective. And, a great way to build confidence.

    ReplyDelete
  133. 2:15 that is incorrect

    ReplyDelete
  134. LS bounces back from a miserable game against Orono to beat Roch Century 2-1 in OT. Eitehr LS got better fast or Roch Century overrated?

    ReplyDelete
  135. Woodbury v. EP?

    ReplyDelete
  136. Woodbury wins in shoot out. it was 1 - 1 at end of regulation

    ReplyDelete
  137. I hope to catch that rematch in the finals in November. Must have been a great game.

    ReplyDelete
  138. There will be no rematch: Wayzata is loaded and will be in the finals in November.

    ReplyDelete
  139. Eagan starts the year off with a BIG victory, over Sartell, or was it Moorhead, either way MO continues his streak of playing ZERO ranked opponents. Not sure what the parents think of this, but it assures his winning record and job security. One might wonder why Eagan has yet to get to state when they have been loaded for years, could it be lack of preparation? Competition?

    ReplyDelete
  140. last time i checked eagan played in the lake conference with ep, eastview, and ls. last few years eagan has also had some injuries. those two reasons are the main reasons why they haven't made it to state. i don't disagree on the annual early season "stat trips", but at least they can't reward two assists per goals like they used to before the rule change.

    ReplyDelete
  141. 3:14 Actually players can do anything regarding extra training as they see fit. What is not allowed is anything competitive in the same sport. So working out with your club team/coaches is not allowed but working out with a private coach is cool. In high school, just ask the coach to hang out after practice, that 's the cheapest way.

    ReplyDelete
  142. Eagan plays woodbury on tuesday, and they play moorhead every year because MO's boys play football at NDSU in fargo so they schedule game up there around boys FB game, this year there was a snag where moorhead had to come down here and change that, and last year their trip was to ohio where they played two nationally ranked teams, they have also taken trips to Nevada and Iceland in recent memory

    ReplyDelete
  143. no Pine Island this year......

    ReplyDelete
  144. This year: Wayzata vs. Woodbury for the title; Edina vs. EP for 3rd.

Next year: Wayzata vs. EP for the title; Edina maybe at state, Woodbury totally off the radar.

    ReplyDelete
  145. not sure edina & ep can both go to state unless the sections change.

    ReplyDelete
  146. Whether at state or sections, game between EP and Edina will be for third place in State.

    ReplyDelete
  147. EP and Edina are same section - 2AA. EP takes the cake in both section and state over Woodbury. Woodbury is loaded with talent, but EP will be prepared more playing in Lake conference. They will face physical play. This is Edina's last chance and they won't measure up to EP.

Ha, Ha about Eagan. I think Pine Island is an every other year contract....double stat score!

    ReplyDelete
  148. If people are concerned about weak schedules, look at Wayzata -they have a total of 4 games on their entire schedule with decent competition (2xEdina, 2xTonka). Their pretender/contender status won't be know until sections.

    ReplyDelete
  149. Even Wayzata's section is weak . . .

    ReplyDelete
  150. what would you like them to do about their conference and section?

    ReplyDelete
  151. Nothing. With their weak conference and section, maybe they could schedule someone tougher than Brainerd for non-conference?

    ReplyDelete
  152. Why all the Eagan bashing by those in the west....Wayzata played Brainerd yesterday.

    ReplyDelete
  153. At least everyone knows where Brainerd is . . . unlike Pine Island.

    ReplyDelete
  154. Was the Woodbury Eden Prairie game in a tournament? Because MSHL has it as 1-1 tie and no games in the regular season can go to a shoot out. Just overtime.

    ReplyDelete
  155. yes it was the annual tournament in Duluth that had EP, Cretin, Duluth and Woodbury.

    ReplyDelete
  156. Everyone knows TP does not like to play games, but values training more then anything else. Not sure the parents out there quite get it, but I think when TP is your coach you just accept whatever comes with a smile. Wayzata has a super weak section, they will walk into State without question.

    ReplyDelete
  157. Edina 4, Jefferson 2. Jefferson gets 1st 2 goals then Edina comes back with 4 unanswered, looking very dominant. More physical team than usual for the Hornets; serious firepower up top with two very different but equally talented forwards and tons of depth. Should come down to Edina and EP in sections; one very good team will be home for State.

    ReplyDelete
  158. I don't get the relevance of Pine Island to this year's season. Is someone living in the past? The title of the blog topic is '09 HS Season.
I believe Eagan is playing Woodbury on Tuesday. Who is Wayzata playing?

    ReplyDelete
  159. the pine island game wasnt even scheduled by MO and eagan, it was in a tournament where they were told who they had to play, not their fault

    ReplyDelete
  160. This is High School soccer -- the competition will be always be weak. The players (and parents) should just relax and have fun!

    ReplyDelete
  161. 447 love the HS BASHING

the 07 LS team and 03 WDBRY could compete with any club team in the state and outside of a few U-17 and U-18 teams the top five HS teams would compete with just about everyone else. A HS can draw from the best player 15-18 while a club team can only draft from their age group. Ever notice how hot shot U-16, U-15 players RARELY make a peep in HS. It is much harder to compete against 18 year old women when you are 15. HS may not be the best but it is not a laugh as most of you club snobs make it out to be. And before you go on about how some HS teams are just brutes, watch a college match every game is a blood bath. the game, when played at a high level is PHYSICAL.

Why does MO get so much grief for a weak schedule but TP a free pass? At least Eagan has some tough conference games and they are playing WDBRY WIthe tthe single round robin in the lake every conference match is a big one.

    ReplyDelete
  162. U guys are all wrong! bUrnsville is going to rock this year!!

    ReplyDelete
  163. Burnsville does have a very special player indeed. There are only a few defenders in the state who can stop her.

    ReplyDelete
  164. 5 15pm, never start a sentence with "and" try again.

    ReplyDelete
  165. HS offers unique opportunities - the challenge of blending players from several age groups/teams/abilities into a cohesive unit, learning a playing system in a few short weeks, and a chance for players to take new responsibility/positions from their club role, which is often restricted.
Those who can adapt their skills to new possibilities often have the most successful teams, and I would argue they are the most capable of adapting to college soccer.

    ReplyDelete
  166. sorry 8:30, imo, the schools that have the best collection of club talent have the most succuessful teams.........
love to hear of a few examples that are contrary.

    ReplyDelete
  167. You are correct about HS providing unique opportunities, but playing poorly organized soccer ("blending players from several age groups/teams/abilities into a cohesive unit, learning a playing system in a few short weeks") does not prepare a player for college soccer.

    ReplyDelete
  168. 829

actually in the proper context starting a sentence with "and" is acceptable. In the case mentioned maybe not so much, but that does not diminish the vailidity of the argument.

    ReplyDelete
  169. I'm loving the fact that the girls blog is getting more action than the boys blog and that the first full week of matches is just around the corner. Good luck to all!

    ReplyDelete
  170. I noticed a list of players to watch in today's Star Tribune and only 1 was a defender (girls). Wondering if Ms. Soccer is ever a defender or is the attention always on forwards and midfielders?

    ReplyDelete
  171. Noticed that too. It seems to me that they didn't really do their homework, that they opened up last year's All-State selection list and just mentioned those players. Not to take anything away from them, but I think the Star Tribune just did a half a** job of writing the story. They should have broken it down into Class A and AA and mentioned up and coming players to watch. There are some excellent young players to watch as well.

    ReplyDelete
  172. 8:04AM:

I believe Dana Tripp was Ms. Soccer a few years back, and was a defender. Also a keeper was named Ms. Soccer....the kid from Rochester whose name is escaping me

    ReplyDelete
  173. It was Chelsea Turner

    ReplyDelete
  174. How do you find the JV schedule if the school doesnt have it listed anywhere

    ReplyDelete
  175. Not sure why Olivia Schultz would be on the list..sidelined for entire high school season with ACL injury, definately a great player but not a player to watch THIS high school season.

    ReplyDelete
  176. me thinks 8:22 might have a point.

    ReplyDelete
  177. 9:09 Call the school's Athletic Director. They have to have the schedule in their office.

    ReplyDelete
  178. The Star Trib is worthless when it comes to soccer coverage. Coaches invest time providing them with info. and they disregard it and publish info. that is crap and outdated. It would be nice if they would someday pay attention to another sport than football.

    ReplyDelete
  179. Poor Burnsville...ony one special player? Thought it took a whole team to win a game. With attitudes like that no wonder they won't do well.

    ReplyDelete
  180. 8:22 you are right on, but let me ask you, why do you even read that paper?

    ReplyDelete
  181. One slight correction- high level soccer is often played in a very physical way. HS soccer, on the other hand, is played with brute force because of a very definitive lack of talent/skill.

There are quite a few high level players in HS soccer, but when those with skill challenge those at the C2-C3 level injuries occur.

Did you know that nearly 75% of female players will tear an ACL in their career? Let's dig deeper.....
80+% of those will tear them in HS games. This is astounding because in club soccer, there are (on average) 125 games per year. Compare that to the 12-15 games per year in HS. Why the increased injury rate? Two hypotheses are brought forward by researchers:

    1) lower talent level brings a more physical nature to the game

    2) decreased level of training/fitness given by inexperienced coaches

Either way- HS soccer is just a fun, social event. Which would be why MN parents are so enamoured with HS soccer. Same thought process that keeps the CCs moving forward without providing proper training or services for the players. Nothing wrong with it, just call it like it is. Don't pretend that the way to a World Cup is through MN High School Sectionals.

    ReplyDelete
  182. Any scores from tonight's games?

    ReplyDelete
  183. 9:34 - source of your stats regarding ACLs?

I know several girls that had ACL injuries. 2 in HS, 2 in college, 7 in club. I realize my own breadth of experience is limited and not statistically relevant, but I would like to see stats you cite. With a 75% serious injury rate, it is surprising anyone plays.

BTW, Neither of the HS injuries had any contact associated with the injury, both players played club higher than C1.

    ReplyDelete
  184. Go away with your poorly written and useless phony information 9:34.

    ReplyDelete
  185. What club team plays 125 games per year?

Since the teams I know play less than 50, including MRL(8), tournaments (9-15), State Cup (5), Regionals (3). Some also play MYSA (10).

The stats also look incredibly inflated.

    ReplyDelete
  186. lets do the math.....
since you can't play club during high school that means there are 10 months of club soccer or roughly 300 days.
125 games in 300 days is a game every two-three days, every week of the month, every month of the year

if only 17% of the time is spent playing high school, but 80+% of ACL's occur during high school, that would mean the ACL injury odds during the high school season are 24X greater than club. riiiigggghhhhttt.

i believe 9:34's post is called "making it up as you go along".

    ReplyDelete
  187. Any word on the Mahtomedi/Central game last night?

    ReplyDelete
  188. Did Breck start the season 0-2 for real? Losing to Trinity 2-1 to open the season and then BSM beat them 4-2?

    wow.

    ReplyDelete
  189. not suprised about the BSM score as they have a very strong side.

    ReplyDelete
  190. Mahtomedi won 3-0.

    ReplyDelete
  191. WOW!!! Only 3-0....Central is terrible. Even North Saint Paul beat Central 5-1. Mahtomedi holding back??????

    ReplyDelete
  192. I didn't see the game and have no affiliation to either program but I find comments like 1:48 extremely disingenuous. Had the score been 8-0 you would be on here ripping them for running up the score. I applaud coaches who use proper discretion and show enough respect for the game and their opponent not to run up the score. Play your bench, change positions, establish restrictions on play, and show some class to finish out the game.

    ReplyDelete
  193. Regardless of the numbers/stats used by 9:34, I have seen stats somewhere that show an incredibly higher incidence of ACL injuries in HS vs. Club. I believe that, not sure of the numbers- but I believe it.

And the basic premise of the post is not totally flawed. HS soccer is about having fun and doing something to bring a community together. It has little to do with scholarships and college recruiting.

    ReplyDelete
  194. @8:59AM -- thank you. The grey matter is getting a little..ummm...grey. Is she still at Marquette?

    ReplyDelete
  195. Mahto's run is over.

    ReplyDelete
  196. More and more of the top players with D1 potential are skipping HS soccer and working out on their own or other options. Lack of skilled players in HS make it too dangerous to risk serious injury.
Not only that but those who play club at the highest level find HS soccer to be boring and a waste of time.

    ReplyDelete
  197. 4:19 The ACL stats cited by 9:34 are obviously silly. 9:34 has an opinion and made up "facts" to support it.

HS soccer has little to do with college recruiting, as showcase tournaments are a more efficient way to identify many potential recruits. I didn't see anyone say otherwise.

However, if I were a coach, I would be interested to see how a potential recruit performed in a different setting than her club team. Can she make her new team better? Can she play a different position, or in a different system? How does she adapt to a different coach? It might be a deciding factor between recruits already identified.

HS is a short season, but it is soccer 6 days/wk with your schoolmates, you play with girls of different ages, and you represent your school. It can contribute to your growth as a soccer player and as a person. It should be fun, but I would hope club soccer was fun as well, or why bother playing?

    ReplyDelete
  198. 10:51-How many players are skipping HS soccer? Seriously, let's have some numbers. I know of/have heard of none. Unless injured I highly doubt what you say is true. Also, the incidence of ACL injuries is not significantly higher in HS soccer vs club soccer.

    ReplyDelete
  199. Agree, heard of none of my daughter's friends who play premier/MRL/etc. not playing HS. Dumb statement. The kids have a great time playing for their high school!

    ReplyDelete
